Mustang manuscript Old SHS handbook reveals many changes The other day while looking through some memorabila, my dad found a Salina High School handbook. That in itself is not too spectacular, but the date does arouse some interest. The small, faded green handbook was used for the 1925-26 school year. Unlike the present Central handbook, the Salina High handbook begins with a brief history of the school. According to the handbook, three buildings Lincoln, Roosevelt and Washington and two cottages were used to house grades seven through 12.

A principal was in charge of all the buildings and each building had its own assistant principal. cafeteria was located in the Washington building. Students and teachers who wanted to eat lunch at school and to sign up each morning before 8:20. A price of 20 cents was charged. Lunches now cost 60 cents.

The handbook also contains a section on clubs and organizations. Such organi- zations as debate, drama club, orchestra and band are still in existence at Central. Such clubs as Hi-Y, the Senior Girls Club and Glee Clubs have disappeared from high school life. Wichita civil rights director sues the city WICHITA, Kan. (UPI) The black director of the city's Civil Rights and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is seeking $110,000 in a federal lawsuit that charges the city and the city manager with racial discrimination.

Jesse Rice, in a suit filed Monday in a federal court in Topeka, seeks $10,000 in actual damages, $100,000 in punitive damages and an injunction restraining Wichita and City Manager Gene Denton from continuing "their racially discriminatory conduct." Rice alleged he has been denied merit salary increases because he is black, and alleged he had been the "subject of retaliation" because he co-operated with another employee's civil rights suit against the city. who as the executive director of the CREEOC receives a $27,000 annual salary after five years' experience, said during a news conference Monday in Wichita "it appears odd that ft 'is necessary for. me to personally have to file a civil rights action to cause the providing of equal opportunity I am responsible for enforcing." State Grange urges approval of meat import bill TOPEKA, Kan. (UPI) Fearing a veto of the new meat import bill, the Kansas Grange has urged President Carter to approve the measure. The annual session of the Kansas state Grange Monday approved sending a telegram to Carter supporting the issue, "in the interest of the livestock producers of the nation." action was endorsed by the master of the Iowa state Grange, Delwin Cross, who also attended the Kansas session.

Lewis Cline of Fredonia, was reelected to a second two-year term as state master of the Kansas Grange. Cline, 67, is a semi-retired farmer and livestock producer. The meat import measure sets up a mechanism for gauging the amount of meat coming into the market so meat imports can be increased or decreased accordingly. It is designed to prevent arbitrary increases of imports such as the recent beef import approved by Carter. Rosalynn will stump for Carlin TOPEKA, Kan.

(UPI) First lady Rosalyn Carter is to appear in Topeka Nov. 2 on behalf of Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Carlin. Mrs. Carter will be featured at a Carlin rally at noon in Topeka's Municipal Carlin headquarters said Tuesday. During her visit, the first lady also is to attend a fund-raising reception for Carlin at the Holiday Inn Downtown.

Rep. Martha Keys, is to be the special host at both appearances by the president's wife. By Leslie Eikleberry At one time, Salina High also had a Radio Club. It seems that this club was popular. According to the handbook, "Salina High School is fortunate in having a very fine radio set with loud speaker.

A great deal of interest was aroused in radio last year and a club was organized. The members met weekly and constructed a number of sets and studied radio. The club will be continued this year." Competition played an important part in the high school. Letters were given on the basis of a points system. Students who received 12 points during the year were awarded a letter.

Major letters were awarded for football, basketball, track and debate. Minor letters were awarded for tennis, swimming, EDDIE'S CLUB For Your Dancing and Listening Measure "BJ-4" Members 4 Their Cuests OMM: WtA, Frl. Sat. boxing, wrestling, oratory and typewriting. Over 75 academic courses were offered to the students.

Most of these classes have survived the years, but they are not as specialized as they once were. For instance, a course in grammar was offered to the students. Now some aspect of grammar is taught in each first semester English course. Instead of the present four grading periods of nine weeks each, the students at Salina High were faced with six six- week periods and the finals that went with them. They were required to take four courses each semester, "unless excused by the principal for good cause." Presently, students are required to take subjects for six hours per semester and may enroll in study hall their junior and senior years.

The students were also required to have 32 credits before they were permitted to graduate. Students now must have at least 40 credits in order to graduate. The handbooks may differ somewhat, but one thing remains the same. "A diploma will not be granted to a pupil until all work has been satisfactorily completed." Treat'em right this Halloween Night.
