wins ratings with the World Series By JOAN HANAUER YORK (UPI) Baseball was the national pastime last week and the World Series scored a big hifWltn the viewing audience. The Yankees and the Dodgers also struck a blow for NBC, which toppled ABG" from the No. 1 spot for the week COSMIC-CAT CAPER ENDS Walt Ottnev ProduCfcyu SHOWN Mil 9:00 US wo "WINK THE POOH new too 1 SOUND THE LAFF ALARM Starring flmComray Released by The International Picture Show Company in the Nielsen ratings, thanks to the Series taking over win, place and show positions. NBC further bolstered its excellent showing for the week by taking fourth place with the first of a two-part "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" and fifth place with "Bob Hope Salutes the World Series." The success of Gilligan's return underlined the dismal lack of appeal of CBS' "American Girls" in the same Saturday night time period, but it also appeared to reveal a previously undetected softness in the high ratings for ABC's "Love Boat" in that time slot. "Love Boat" may be sinkable after all.

ABC expected the loss, but over at CBS rumors are flying about executive changes in the programming department, with CBS in the cellar not only for the week but also for the season to date. Last week NBC held a 41.6 share of the audience (that means 41.6 percent of viewers were watching NBC) while ABC had a 30.0 share and CBS a 25.5 share. Worse, for the season to date (as compiled to ABC which has the season starting a week earlier than CBS) ABC has a 33 share, NBC a 31.2 share and CBS a 27.1 percent share of the viewing audience. A big surprise this season for NBC has been the performance of "CHiPs," a show with a mediocre rating record last year, which actually took a 40 share of the audience in its time period last week, reaching 14th in the ratings. More good news for NBC: "Lifeline," the doctor documentary, ranked 29th with a respectable 34 share, which could give the show a vital ratings transfusion.

A big problem for CBS is the failure of its new shows NBC's new shows, with the exception of "Centennial" (pre-empted last week) have an equally dismal record. It's just that NBC counts less on series and more on specials. CBS has pointed out in the past that series are the bread and butter of television and so they are but there's a catch. People have to watch them. The new series that look good this year are all ABC "Mork and Mindy" Hill 11 from Southern Justice Now Appearing Nightly thru Oct.

in the top 10 again last week, "Battle- star Galactica" tied for 19th but definitely a hit, and "Taxi" right up there also, with an up-and-down production number. The 10 top network television programs for the week ending Oct. 15, according tolthe A.C.
