i the Salt lake tribune Sunday morning February 23 1936 9 Through the Garden Gate By BARBARA VORSE Jeal Dog Tales Told by Author Title Registered 3 Patent Office Girl Re serves of the A Garden Queries Answers Texas Bridge ix By And now for th4 pars on those first four hands of the bridge Olympic which were published in this column last Sunday Did you bid and play them make or defeat them according to your figuring of possible par? Well get out the hands as published and read here the proper bidding and the par established by the committee of experts which prepared the hands for the Olympic: 4 4 i ti "4 Yes air they play bridge down in Texas and they have their own bridge etiquette too Karl Hardy asked us the other day if ever heard of tho bridge player down In Houston who held IS spades arrived at a grand slam contract and then failed to make it be possible we said yes It is and was down In said Karl who continued: the heart lead singleton aee was played and declarer was forced to trump whereupon his partner shot him on the so he never made his ii Washington's Birthday Ball Tha A was the scene of a colorful celebration the Girl Reserve birthday ball held last Saturday from 4 to 5 There was an array of bright colored costumes and each girl was accompanied by her partner who was another girl in her group The entertainment included dancing refreshments and a play entitled Birthday The cast included the girls of the Hobby Hour play production class and was directed by Mrs Jack Daly (The girls in the play included Beulah Pearce as Madam Bradley Mary Johnstone Penelope Alice Burt Phoebe Marjorie Terry Phyllis Joyce Hicks Cicily and Eloise Pearce as' the footman to General Washington One hundred and fifty girls were in attendance Miea Nn Logan Utah writes: Your column ia Indeed a great help to everyone that reads it I am wondering if you could tell me where I could obtain the plant that you call the "cup and I do not remember its real name and I would like very much to have one as I have a pot that hangs lit the south window and know that it will grow well In all the sunshine there is The cup and saucer vine is known botanically as bobaea scandens The seed may bo obtained from most any seedhouse In sowing the seed press it edgewise in the pot as it is large and flat and will not germinate nearly as well when planted broadside I -XWW a rj It 4 id- I- partner opened tha spade six and East-West shovqled in 12' trick: four clubs fout diamonds three spades and a heart Three over-tricks And then came that inevitable: we couldn't stop it partner I play according to rule and so opened the fourth best of my longest and strongest suit That's right isn't That little question at the end what puts you on the spot providing you observe your Emily Post But if that worm we hinted about turn at this point and you should say something like this Why didn't you break the rule? Your hand is a good Illustration of when to break rules You had no honor strength yet in the face of that East and West refused to try for a slam The inference should be that they didn't hold all tha cards find since you had nothihg I must have had a fair share of honor strength Further than that they bid only diamonds and clubs which I would say could have been taken to mean that neither had a biddable major Your length in spades plus iSoth opponents bidding no-trump leaves me with but few of them But you held only two hearts Where oh where were the rest? "If East and West couldn't bid hearts they Hiust have been in my hand Also I must have some outside strength since they didn't bid slam "So jny friend here was a spot for one of those short suit openings against a hearts by any figuring you can make And let this sink in: Had you led a heart our now chuckling opponents would have made only eight trteks in stead of As a result of this the partner in North probably would say "Oh thank or something and promise not to make any more mistakes And then there may fall such hand as this with West the dealer 4 9 2 8 7 5 3 -10 9 2 8 Views from windows of a house find interesting termination in flagstono pavemerft furnished with benches and screened with shrubbery Window Views Important In House Beautification closes that an extra queen or better distribution in band may produoe a grand slam but under present Scoring it is better to be conservative when choosing between a small and a grand slam South should open a diamond the solidity of the diamond suit and the posses sion of all the aces having been revealed by bidding East draws trumps takes the ace of hearts and ruffs a heart and then draws one more round of trumps In dummy he saves the ace and king of spades alone throwing the two small spades When the three clubs are run North must unguard heart queen or throw away the spade stopper Mrs Farmington Utah writes: I would like so much to have you suggest ways to plant a shrubbery border Should I give it a curved edge or a straight line at the front? How should I arrange my shrubs? According to the general design of your yard the shape of your shrub bed will be controlled If your garden Is" informal a curved line is most appropriate If there are straight paths and beds in other parts of the grounds then this planting should be related to them with straight lines Plant the tall- est and bushiest shrubs in the corners where their massiveness will lend weight and the smaller growing varieties in the intervening spaces Shrubs of medium height are spaced about four feet apart while larger growing varieties such as lilacs and honeysuckles need slX' to eight feet between them double raise is a very strong bid and Solith should gamble for one more trick and the game that goes with it West makes yie dafe opening lead of the jack of diamonds and after winning dummy leads a trump West winning the first trick with the ace It should now be obvious to West that the one hope of defeating the contract is to win three heart tricks before South can discard heart loser on dummy's high clubs proper lead to make the most of every possible division of the outstanding hearts is the jack queen covers but East wins with the ace and leads the nine back through South's ten trapping the ten under the king Four More Hands Now here are four more hands to study this week See if you can rate a higher percentage than you did on the first four: "7p Japanese Project Would you like to visit Japan? Then you want to miss Girl Reserve meetings during the next month for the Girl Reserves are going'on a trip of exploration Their journey will end on March 26 with a Japanese spring festival and doll Show in the A clubhouse During the weeks before the festival all sorts of interesting things can be done in club meetings and the results displayed at the festival Japanese prints screens kimonas and embroidery may be located and borrowed for study A collection of small articles in Japan1 might be gathered Some groups may like tojtuay Japanese flower arrangemeirtVwhich Is an art In itself Or if club is current-event minded a scrapbook of news' concerning Japan would be Interesting Two clubs have already decided cn their part in the festival The Horace Mann girls are preparing a Japanese play and the Lincoln high school club is going to make cherry blossom decorations Other groups are asked to let the Girl Reserve office know of their plans as soon as possible so that duplication may be avoided All clubs will be expected to share in the doll show details of which will be announced next week 't Hand No 2 North-South Opponents held to nine tricks at a four-heart con tract Foolproof Defense (Continued from Preceding Pact) place on the seat A fast-driven motor car whizsed past It ran over the galloping dog and killed him The whole nlgborhood mourned Tradesmen sent flowers to put on their little friend's grave More than 200 school children stood in a blinding rainstorm to watch his body go to Its burial Scores of firemen from various companies attended the obsequies The fire commissioner sent message of condolence to the members of 45 Above the grave marker was set and on it wre engraved the words: Good Dog" Dog in Court Here is a tale of a dog that was baled to court: Shep belonged to John Riddock of Calgary in Canada The dog was an elderly Airedale and he had all the brains and courage of that grand breed Riddock had taught him In ptippy-hood to go daily to the shop of a certain butcher and there to receive a bone or a piece of meat for his dinner The food was charged to Riddock's account For years this daily journey to the butcher shop continued Then one day the butcher was ill and the ehop was closed Shep arrived at the shut door of the shop and barked for admittance No answer So he kept on barking A policeman happened to be passing along the street He saw what seemed to be a stray dog raising a disturbance outside a closed shop There was an ordi nance in Calgary against stray dogs "wandering at The po-liceman lugged poor Shep off in custody Riddock found what had happened to his Airedale So he ap peared at the local police court and demanded justice He explained that Shep had been taught to go every day to the and that his barking had been caused by his inability to get past that closed door and receive his dinner All honor to the judge! His honor decreed that this daily trip to the butcher shop was lawful pursuit of the dog's and that an animal thus engaged could not be branded as ing at large" So he dismissed the case and set Shep free Saves Own Life In McPherson Kansas there was a campaign to round up stray dogs and kill them Patrolmen Richard Knowles and Lyle Littleton caught a jolly little mongrel roaming about the streets They led him to a vacant lot Littleton drew his pistol and took careful aim The dog sat up grinning at his executioner and wagging his stub of a tall The policeman hesitated then lowered the pistol He handed the weapon to Officer Knowles who took it readily enough and aimed it As he was about to pull the trigger the funny little dog arose on his hind legs and began to waddle in this fashion toward the policemen The men looked sheepishly at each other Then the pistol was slipped into its holster Back to town clumped the two patrolmen while the reprieved dogf risked them Before night they had made the rounds of their friends and had found a family which was glad to pay the'stray licence fee and to give him a comfortable home for the rest of his life a garden of a friend there are three spruces at the end of the lot which are centered on the axis of doors leading on to the living terrace Winter and summer these trees furnish a restful and satisfying picture Arborvitaes and tall junipers will do the same thing Delightful effects are also attained with plantings of pyracantha and other shrubs which carry winter berries Some plants have a brilliancy in their twigs which attracts attention during the dormant season Red and yellow dogwoods may mentioned in particular for use such plantings Besides with plants vistas may be terminated with architectural features A bench or arbor or pool at the end of a garden is always pleas ant to see from within Outside the bedroom window of a cottage that know is a simple bird bath aur-rounded by a mass of shrubs During the summer a tiny jet supplies gentle spray of water that never fails to attract the feathered creatures Each morning the owner is refreshed by a glance at this bit of loveliness before assuming the work Views no-trump contract North though he can reasonably expect to win seven tricks with diamonds as trump should not bid up to three diamonds because with both opponents bidding and his partner passing there seems little to gain and an 800-point set is possible Against the four-heart contract North makes his normal opening of the diamond king and continues with the queen Knowing that neither South nor West has another diamond North should then lead a low diamond forcing South to trump with his highest heart in the hope that it will force out an honor from the West hand Since South's eight of hearts does force out the jack North later wins two heart tricks and defeats the con tract Bryant and Lincoln Valentine parties have been very much in vogue at the A recently Last Thursday the Lincoln high limited and that It is unlikely that North has five of his six possible losing tricks accounted for West opens the queen of diamonds and after losing two diamond tricks South ruffs the third round He now leads a spade and though West should try to make it as difficult as possible for the declarer by playing low the proper play from dummy is the eight for if East has either spade honor then only two trumps will remain at and they will later fall to the ace and king (Copyright 1936 McNaught By looking carefully out the windows of your house you will atp that a great deal more penetrates the clear glass panes than just light There are ail kinds of views From the dining room windows that perhaps face the rear yard you may be looking directly into the clothesline or a barb wire fence at the back of the lot You may even be gazing beyond your property to that of the neighbor and aometlmea such adjoining yards merit no frequent inspection Along the side of the house some windows permit no more than the blank wall of the adjacent dwelling to hit you in the eye Very often the living room windows have nothing more Interesting to offer than the constant roar of traffic of the street Home is intended to be a refuge from the noise and disorder of the outside world It Is a haven of peace and rest If you would have such an atmosphere about you consider the pictures which your windows bring Into your lives Half the charm of a home is gained through its windows Apple blossoms lilacs and honeysuckles outside a window pane bring serenity to the inside that la never achieved through gazing at fast moving vehicles vacant lots or adjacent buildings Attractive Window Vistas Even though your grounds may be small and your house Is crowded closely against the next there is often a chance to greatly Improve the view While planning for additions and changes in ths garden this summer the creation of attractive window vistas should have your utmost consideration But you may say you have no space and even though the windows do look into the neighbor's wall there is nothing that can be done about it One gardener who has just such a situation managed to solve her problem very nicely The most prominent window in her liv-ingroom faced an ugly brick walLof the house next door with a yard space of only six or eight feet intervening As this area was most always shaded she erected an attractively designed lattice framework the width of the window and placed it on her property line On it she planted a honeysuckle vine Now instead of soot-stained bricks she enjoys the delicate tracery of shiny green foliage almost every month of the year Where a house is located on a corner lot it is not necessary to resign yourself to the biistle of the highway Such a property located on East South Temple street is so screened off from the happenings of the thoroughfare with a high hedge and massed shrubbery borders that every window of the living room looks into interesting walls of green House Designs Change It used to be that houses were designed with broad front porches and open yards so that the family could sit and view the activities of the outside world but we have discovered more recently the greater value and enjoyment of privacy Front porches are replaced with mere porticos and living terraces are attached to the rear or side of the dwelling In these cases the windows of the living rooms have an unusual opportunity to furnish delightful pictures to the indoors of the garden beyond The whole arrangement ofia rear yard is often built upon the imaginary line or axis that emanates from a glass door or window' When opportunities for peaceful pleasant views are so easily available it is a pity to mar them with a double row' of permanent clotheslines or an Incinerator As necessary hs these features often are it is usually possible with little study to at least remove them from the direct line of vision The ideal way of course Is to give them a space by themselves and screen them from the rest of yard with either a shrubbery border or vine-covered fence By using re movable lines both these services may be kept undercover except when in actual use When living room windows face the street the outlook sometimes may be deflected by billowy shrub plantings' along the lateral bound' aries that have a tendency to in close the yard by stretching out to ward the center at the front Often a tree judiciously placed will serve as a focal pointy and convey an at mosphere of tranquillity Window Winter Views Views from windows may be al most as attractive in the winter as during the summer if the right plant materials are used Ever In the be in I 963 6 863 8 5 952 5 2 5 A tx Senior Scouts Receive Praise iW wkY Hand No 8 West
