At a time when nobody else! was willing or able to maintain a public library for the; city, it assumed that burden. It gave something even more valuable than thought and effort. .) Not only did it underwrite, the operating expenses of the library, in large part, but it undertook the job of modernizing the antique collection of books.

At that time, the library consisted largely of volumes hich nobody read or wanted read. The club members decided that the only way to make. it popular was to add some new books of the-type ijtiat people wanted to read. They advanced $25 to purchase such books for a "pay shelf" and their proven when the books promptly paid for themselves in rentals. This' fund has been re-invested many times.

Now the city is about to have a building to house its library, but the club to carry on. The annual carnival given each year at this time, is the only method the club has of financing its library expenditures. The dimes spent at this carnival not only bring amusement to the spender, but they provide reading matter for hundreds of Murphysboro residents who otherwise" would have none.
