Statesman ournal FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 2013 A GANNETT COMPANY Statesmanjournal Gun-control bills head to Senate One lawmaker says they won't fix problem session with Democrats speaking in support of stricter gun laws in the aftermath of shootings in the Clackamas Town Center and at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Republicans have voiced their opposition to the idea, arguing that targeting concealed handgun license holders will do nothing to prevent mass shootings. See GUNS, Page 3A By Queenie Wong Statesman Journal The fate of four gun control bills in Oregon could come down to the vote of a Scappoose Democrat. Sen. Betsy Johnson, D-Scap-poose, said Thursday the bills are poorly crafted, more difficult to implement than sup porters think and won't help to curb gun violence.

The legislation would include allowing primary and secondary school districts to ban guns on campus and requiring background checks for gun sales between private individuals. "I just don't think the bills accomplish what people hope they would accomplish," she said. "If I had my way I would do something meaningful rather than symbolic." She referenced helping youth access more mental health services as among the ideas she would support. Johnson was among two Democrats in 2012 who voted against a bill to ban guns on school grounds. Gun control has become a partisan issue this legislative Sen.

The nonprofit Lord Schryver Conservancy has anticipated this day since at least 2007, when it obtained a legal right of first refusal on the property.

But the all-volunteer group lacks the cash to match a potential offer in the owner's desired price range, $375,000 or more. Nor can the conservancy afford to maintain the home and garden, offer classes and open the site to visitors as a public resource. The conservancy's seven-member volunteer board has decided to mount a fundraising campaign for about $550,000. Details still are being worked out. But the looming deadline may prove too great an obstacle for the group, whose yearly budget is about $6,000.

By Barbara Curtin Statesman Journal The coming weeks may decide whether the Salem home and garden of landscape architects Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver will be protected as a cultural treasure or sold to new owners to treat as they will.

The pair made history as the first female landscape designers in the Pacific Northwest. Gaiety Hollow, their home from 1932 to 1984, served as their test garden, showroom and retreat. To this day, it demonstrates how the duo adapted classic European and East Coast influences to create a fresh Northwest style.
