Tormented by dreams, bus hijacker says Malcolm N. Carter AP writer NEW YORK Luis Robinson, the alleged killer of two persons during his hijacking of a bus last Independence Day, portrays himself as an individual who lived high on drugs while tormented by bad dreams and a search for meaning in life. In a two-hour interview Tuesday with The Associated Press at the Riker's Island Mental Health Center, the 27-year-old seaman apprentice talked of his first love, a mystical vision, the feeling of having disappointed his mother in Panama, the reasons fathered a son and an event he views as pivotal to his life. "I'd like to smile and stuff," the small but brawny, accused murderer confessed, "but it's hard to smile in this public to understand the whole Expressing a desire, for the picture" of his life until the hijacking, he added: "The fact that I'm in here and the reasons surrounding my being here, I do get depressed." Robinson is accused of homicide, kidnapping and robbery in the hijacking of the Vermont Lines bus to Kennedy Airport as it headed north from here. Found mentally competent for trial, he is due in Queens Supreme Court on Thursday for pre-trial motions.

And the Appellate Division is to rule on a request for change of venue on Friday, but defense lawyer David Addison said he is doubtful that the request will be granted. The hijacking virtually paralyzed Kennedy for nine hours, with hordes of police emergency vehicles surrounding the bus during negotiations in which the hijacker demanded $6 million and a flight out of the country. The hijacker killed two persons accidentally, said Robinson and wounded two others. First wounded was John McGavern of Hartford, shot ecause, Robinson said, he thought he was an FBI agent trailing him on a federal charge that Robinson tried to cash a stolen money order. or The second wounded was Hong Kong businessman Jimmy Lo, whose shooting was meant to convince the authorities of his seriousness, he added.

"Everyone seemed to be really pleading for their lives except for that Chinaman," said Robinson, who at times seemed close to tears, almost unable to talk. "He was a bit standoffish about the whole thing, so I shot him and put him out the Transplanted from Panama to Brooklyn at the age of 13, Robinson said he lived with his father and step-mother in a closely supervised life that was to bring him honors at Fort Hamilton High School and a $3,000 scholarship to Bowdoin. But the death from leukemia of an 8-year-old brother ended his desire to succeed, Robinson recounted. I got the impression, it seemed like someone was doing something to him," he said. "Now I realize it must have been my imagination.

Robinson said he sobbed at the boy's funeral despite his attempt "to be the hard-laced Robinson who didn't cry." This happened during his first year at Bowdoin, a year, he continued, in which a lot For example, he and a white high school senior fell in love, Robinson related. "We used to go walking on the beach, a real love story scene," he said. "But one day she just comes and tells me we couldn't 1 CUSTOMER SERVICE HOT LINE 454-2010 Circulation office hours: Daily 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Sat. 7 a.m.-1 p.m., Sun. and Holidays 7 a.m.-11 a.m.

He also started smoking marijuana heavily and taking LSD.

"They used to call my room the psychedelic shack." Robinson said with a rare Robinson, who said he has read the Bible six or seven times, as well as the Koran, remarked that the only subject in which he excelled was religion. "There was something else I was looking for, and it wasn't just education. It had to do with religion and why we're here," he said. "I was looking for the truth. To me, life seemed to be about something else besides what we do.

Sometimes, I feel like I'm close it's probably when I'm farthest away from One snowy day after his brother's death, he woke up crying and decided to chuck Bowdoin. Soon he was high all the time, working for a while as telephone company clerk, learning the photography business and collecting welfare and unemployment. He also fathered a son, now 6, who lives in New Jersey with his own mother and Robinson's parents. "It was a childlike reason for having a child. She was an attractive girl and I thought she would give me a beautiful child," Robinson said.

"I didn't realize the responsibility. It was this desire to Paranoid delusions that seemed to stem from drug use began to dog him, Robinson continued, saying he was institutionalized for 10 days following one episode. He would dream, he said, and imagine that evil forces were after him: "I was very Night after night, monsters would chase him in the dreams and he would try to escape them in panic, he said. He was always the first person in the dream to detect these monsters, and they always looked the same. Obituary Mr.
