22 Poughkeepsie Journal Mondoy.Moy 15, 1978 Obituaries Royal Decker Wesley Van Benschoten dies at 61 Wesley B. Van Benschoten, owner and president of John Van Benschoten Smith Street, city, one of the oldest automobile sales and service agencies in the United States, died this morning "at Vassar Hospital. He was 61 years old and resided at 35 Alden Road, city. A lifelong Poughkeepsie resident, Mr. Van Benschoten also owned the Grossman Liquor Store, city, which he purchased in December, 1965.

He was born on June 2, 1916, the son of John and Carolyn (Butts) Van Benschoten. He was a graduate of Raymond Riordan preparatory school and in 1937 was graduated from Colgate University, Hamilton, with a bachelor's degree in geology. In 1966, Mr. Van Benschoten was chosen by Colgate University to receive the coveted Silver Puck, symbol of pre eminence in hockey at Colgate. At the time, was the seventh man to oreceive the award.

Mr. Van Benschoten was an all around athlete during' his undergraduate days at the college, participating in football, basketball, lacrosse and golf, in to hockey. He was captain of the hockey and golf teams during his senior year at the school. In addition, he was elected to "Konosioni, the highest distinction that can be earned by a Colgate undergraduate for his participa tion in and contribution to extracurricular activities. A member of the former County Airport Commission, he also served as the commission's secretary. A member of the New York State Automobile Dealers Association, Mr. Van Benschoten was a past president, past third vice president, past assistant treasurer and a past member of the board of directors of the group.

A member and former champion of the Dutchess Golf and Country Club, he was also a member of the New York Athletic Club. A member of the Poughkeepsie Chamber of Commerce and a past director of the group, Mr. Van Benschoten was a former president of the Sales Executive Club of the Mid Hudson Valley, a member of the Amrita Club, was formerly on the board of directors of the Farmers and Manufacturers Bank and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Poughkeepsie. He was married to the former Carolyn Marie Coffman, who survives, on June 9, 1951. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John Irvine, and Robert Poughkeepsie; a daughter, Linda, Poughkeepsie, and a brother, John Van Benschoten Poughkeepsie.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Merle Irwin will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
