I think I stated my intention of lata? tbs En lith ncamet for Jamaica, which prorcd to bo oar old New YoA femrjts tho Groat Western. After landing at Kingiton tho proceeded to St Jago do Cobia, priDf ma nearly a week'a aoioorn on the bland, prior to embarking for the Idand of Coba Kiopton, although quite a Urge ton, wea exceedingly doll. The colonist! complain bitterly of the mother country an immense number of estates have been thrown up; tbe price of labor demanded by the manumitted blacks exceeding the ability of the planter to grow sugar in competition with the slave boldine colonies. Various expedients have tiean tried by the English to in trodocs laborers from Cast Indies, which has proved a failure. One large planter inlormed me that the apprentice aystera was now band lo be the best.

All captured slaves were apprenticed for annmbrrof years, and not understanding the language or tha country, apply themselves readily to labor, and become attached, to the esUte, and with good treatment have no disposition to leave. Although Kingston is a quiet and nnin tereetiog town, lying on a slope with wide and on paved slreeta and sandy soil, atill many of tbc houses, constructed ol wood or Blono'of two stories high, setting a little back from (he street, with verandulce aboro and below, have an air of convenience for a warm climate. I found a very good and retired hotel, with all those comforts about it peculiarly English, and kept by an English lady. Tho hotels geuerally are only tolerable. I enjoyed a rest after my fatigues in Hayli, and the made some excursions in the interior.

The capital of the Inland, Srianlxli Town, offers nothing of interest aside from the public bdildingsj houee of assembly, and residence of the governor, with the Military Barracks for the black troops. The white regiment of English soldiers is stationed at New Castle, au elevated point in the mountains, some fifteen mile from Kingston, where they enjoy heller health and can be called upon when needed. The Uouse of Assembly uas in session. It is composed of forty seven members; a respectable appearing body; the largest proportion white, some mulatto? and one black. The debate was rather interesting, as tending lo reduce the bur deus of the Inland the taxes being enormous for their present reduced resources; but the Gover nor, Dishop, and other appointed by the Crown, with fat officer, being members of the council or tipper house of twrlre, bolted I understood, and suppose bad their own way.

Tbe Court of Assise was holding its term while I was in the Capital. On entering the court room 1 found a crowd ofblacks and mulattos, drawn thither by the trial of a negro who occupied the Prisoners box for the murder of one of his race iu a night fracas. I made my way through lo get a view aud hear the evidence, and could not without difficulty command my gravity. The judges and lawyers, in black robes, agreeable to the English form; the jury half while and the balance nezroes and mulattos. The evidence on the part of the blacks who were present et the light, was given in snen oroKen language, and so rrs of Havana.

ThesUsmer lay off in the harbor and were taken on board by a steam ferry boat The company retired at an early hour, and all appeared highly gratified and pleased. Tbe deck of tho steamer being well lighted op and a stream of rockets flying in the air produced a fine effect from The weather is delightfully warm the thermometer ranging from 75 to 80 in the shade and favorable for invalids, although many of that clan who come to the Island, not being able to speak the language, get fatigued and disgusted, and lesve earlier Ibr the elates than they should, and the change of climate is too perceptible, and produces bad effects. Th mmn of finl will sooube over, when the functions of the Uoly Week will take place, but having once described to your reader the ceremonies at Jerusalem, and twice the great and gorgeous display at Rome under Gregory 16, and Pius 9, 1 fear I shall hare but little to communicate to you. I could have hardly thought while in Rome, one year since, hearing the enthusiastic multitudes singing "vivas" to "HO now," that he, the Pope, would so soon be banished from his temporal and spiritual scat. SUMMARY, Georgia Wieat Crap. The Milledget ille Recorder says: "The wheat crop, from our accounts, throughout Georgia, are very forward, and unusually promising. From the Saitos Joans), April Mr Awful Tragedy in WUmlngtoiif Mauw.j A correspondent of the Jtfetf gives the foUowiBg particulars of a cold blooded murder which was committed in Wilmington on the lllh last.

"Yesterday morning between the hours of 9 and 10 o'clock, the bodies Of Mm: tt D. Piersonaed her twin daughters, 4 years old, were found nor vlhlw tnftnirUri anil lifelMB in the hOtlM tbOT OCCn piedat Wilmington, about half a mile from the A Andover line, ins neignoors wer evening previous and discovered nothing unusual, only that Mrs. P. was quite cheerful and in remarkably good spirits. The fact that the curtains remained down at so late an hour in tha morning excited the apprehension of the people in the immediate vicinity, and led to tbe discovery of tho bloody scene.

The children were found in the bed, and their mother lying beside it, all having on only their nightly apparel. "From the manner in which the gashes, subs and eutewere inflicted upon tbe neck, stomach, hands and other parts of the body nf the ill fated woman, there can be scarcely a doubt that she came to her tragical death by the hands of another person as yet unknown. This sopposilion seems to be strengthened by the fact that the back door and one of the windows were fonnd to be unfastened. A difficulty has existed between Mr. and Mrs.

Pierson far a considerable time past, and negotiations were going on for a divorce, lie had not lived with her of late, but bad been employed in some gentleman's family In Boston, as a servant. Report says that he lea his place la the city the day before the murder, and has riot since been seen. The murdered mother is said to hare been remarkably affectionate to her and sustained an irreproachable character among the entire community with whom tbe resided. "The scene of the murder, as has been represented to us, presented evidence ofa terrible death struggle on the part of the hapless mother, and a most diabolical attempt on the part of the murderer to fasten suspicion upon this one of his victims as the author of this bloody work. One hand of the victim, cold and stifTened in death, grasped a large quantity of hair torn from the assassin's head and in the other was plated the bloody knife with which the horrid tragedy Was perpetrated! The first was real the struggle of mother lo protect her offspring and her own life from the midnight murderer, was terribly apparent in (he position of the body, Ihe disorder of the room, and the expression of desperation and horror.

which1 death failed to eradicate from the countenance of wardered woman. The second was as visibly a mockery and deception, for on unclasping (be rigid fingers of (he corpse from the knife, the palm 6f (he hand' grasping was found cut and mangled in (he Most shocking manner. In her struggles she had evidently seized the blade repeatedly to ward from ber throat aid1 Ihe throats of her ill fated children. It was trttlt a fearful tragedy." We learn in addition that Daniel II. Pierson, the husband of the deceased, has been arrested in Reading on suspicion of having commuted the bloody deed.

We have been favoured with the perusal of a letter, poat marked CotOle, Looaiana, and dated on the 3th of February, which gives tbe most melancholy, heart rending intelligence, in regard to a company of emigrants from Monroe Connty, Ga. The party consisted of thirty four whites and forty three ncgresjeft Monroe County early in January, for Texas.

There, were in all aix families, viz: James G. Powell, wife and eight children Lewis Cowart, wife and seven children Jepha V. Walker, wife and five children Mrs. Jones, and her two sons and two' daughters Mrs. Hill, Henry Hill, and Miss Rebecca Hill.

The party proceeded in safety until tbey reached New Orleans, where Ihey embarked on board a steamer, to proceed op the river to some point convenient to their proposed place of future residence. Wctv Mr Cotrart wat taken sick, with Cholera, and died in a lew boon. His com radesand family landed to perform the last aad ritee of burial, when the entire company were pos trated with tha disease in its most malignant form Mr. Cowart, bis youngest chad, and a nephew by the name of Wright, were among the earliest vie lima. Mr.

James G. Powell is also among the dead. At tbe latest advices, eighteen of the com pany bad been buried eenawe.rrees ta one grate! some of them died in three boms after tbey were taken: At the time, (he letter Vai wrillsn, the company had remained at their encampment for ten days, and moat oflhe anferers were conval eecent. entered, with all the possible variety of costumes and dances, as I once saw it, and outside ihe paako or public promenade contained many thou sand more, under tbe mild rays of a full moon, dancing lo the sounds of banjos, and other discordant music then it waa a and like all new visiters I enjoyed it, but now I gaze upon it with indifference. A few days since I met with a travelling acquaintance who had accompanied me when last on the Island to Ihe tooth side where we visited the sugar estates and made ourselves familiar with the whole operation of grinding the cane, and boiling, and granulating tbe extract into anger.

Afterwards we stopped at a small Spanish town at tbe termination of tbe Railroad, which was exceedingly dull excepting during festivals or to those who take an interest in cock fighting, for which tbey have a great passion, and congregato in goodly numbers from town and country in the arena oi a small ineatre twice a week to exercise this cruel practice, in which one or the other of the combatants most be killed to decide tbeir heavy beta. On Sunday morning we attended the Parish Church, where a large number of ladies bad assembled on the occasion, wilb their flowing while and black lace mantillas, gracefully thrown over the back of the head and elioulders, and kneeling and sitting in groups opon their rags on the stone pave oflhe church, apparently devout, and watching the changes of the service, while tbeir negro servants in livery were placed beside them. A detachment of cavalry was also upon their knees, and two of the privates in tbe same position, with drawn steords, were placed beside the priest at the altar. During tho several changes of the service tbe trumpeter of Ihe troopo would sound his thrill bugle, and one imagined tbe old walla shook Service being over many of the ladies crossed over to the fancy ahops, which were all open, to make their Soon after the country people begin to arrive on horse back, wilh their game chickens nnder their arms, and in thia way or in some other divorsion tbey pass the which lo them is considered a festival or holiday, while educated aa we are it seems a great perversion of one of the Ten Commandments to keep boly the Sabbath day. The steamer Isabel, of the Charleston line, has juat left.

before her' departure her owner from Charleston, gave an entertainment on board which reflected much credit and passed off well. The family of the Captain General of the' Ialand, and several of the Spanish nobility, with a number of Ibe consult, and many English, German, and American ladiee and gentlemen, to the number of a hundred, after a dance on deck to tbe. musio of the band, eat down to a magnificent tapper, got up wilb much good lute by the cats mentioned, and when it was brought id by a young man, a nephew of Mr. Blanchard, it waa by him placed upon the counter. The young man at ute moment, naa occasion to step ootside Ihe door, and the box was not observed by Mr.

B. Immediately after tho young man stepped out, three men entered the store, and two of them step, ping back to Mr. Blanchard, asked him about some brandy, stating that Ihey wished to purchase a considerable quantity. Tbe two men engaged the attention of Mr. B.

in sampling brandy, while the third, who remained behind, is supposed to have walked ofT with the box. Tbe two customers soon came lo the conclusion that the brandy would not suit them, and they v. ent away. When the young man came into the store again he was asked by B. about the box, and the fact of the enormous loss then came out.

The robbers most, we think, have seen the box carried to and from the bank on previous occasious, and watched its entrance into the store on this occasion. It con tained in gold and silver, bank notes, notea of hand, checks, drafts, over $300,000. Altogether, this is one oflhe most daring robberies ever coramited in our city, and considering the time of day when it took place, it ia almost a miracle that the scoundrels got off unnoticed JV. O. Wondeif Escape of a Slave. A few weeks ago, slave in a Southern city manadged to open a correspondence wilh a genie man in a Nolhera eily, wilh a view of effecting an escape from bondage. Having arranged Ihe preliminaries, he paid somebody 40 to box him up, and mark him "This aide np with care," and take him to tha Express office consinged to his friend at the North. On the passage, being on board a steamboat, be was accidentally turned head downwards, and almost died wilh the rush of blood to the head. At the next change of transportation, however, be was turned right side np a gain, and after 26 hours' confinement arrived safely at hie destination.

On receiving the box, the gentleman had doubts whether he ahonld find a corpse or a free man. He taped lightly on the box with the question, "All right 7" and waa delighted toi bear the response, "All right, sir." The poor fellow waa immediately liberated from hia place of living burial, and forwarded to a wealthy Abolitionist in a city in New England, where ha now is. Total Defeat of Charlee Albert At the tailing of the Niagara, it will be remembered that war was impending in the North of Italy, and it was anticipated that cither the Austrians or the Picdmonlese would immediately cross tbe Ticino. In a brief fortnight Charles Albert baa fought and has been conquered, and is now an abdicated King and exile in Madrid or Lisbon.

The Austrians passed the Ticino simultaneously with the Piedmontcse, who speedily fell back. Three snecessive battles ensued. In the two taller, on the plains of Vercelli, tbs Austrians were complolely victorious. The laat battle, on the 21th nlL tha main army of the Austrians, some 50,000 strong, encountered Charles Albert at Olango near Novara. Tbe Piedmonleso appeared lohave been of more than equal force.

The battle was fought with terrible obstinacy, and although we hear from many quarters that tho Italians shrunk the contest, certain it is that Charles Albert behaved with the most distinguished bravery. Finding the day going against him, he seems to have sought every opportunity to meet his death in the bailie field, and whatever may be the verdict of history aa to his past conduct, nothing graced bis public life so much aa Ibe laat act ere his quilting it. Hit Abdication and Flight. The Austrians having completely routed the Piedmonlese and driven them to the mounlaius, Charlee Albert abdicated the throne in favor of hia son, Victor Emanusl, and a flag of trace being sent lo the Austrian tent, Marshal Radetzky at once acceded to an armistice. The new King pledges himself to conclude a Treaty of Peace, to disband ten military companiea of Hungarians, Poles and Lombards, who are received.

The Austrians, who bold Turin open to them, magnanimously forbore to take advantages which might have provoked tbe susceptibility of France. It kt generally believed that tbe Pope will be able to return to Rome. GERMANY. AUSTRIA.

The War in Hungary Ot the. Hungarian war very little authentic information ia known, except that it raget fiercely. Bern had gained some advantage over a body of Russians, but soon found himself overwhelmed with their nam hers, and the Emperor will gladly scixe upon any pretext to interfere farther. We ahall not be at all surprised to hear that Ihe Emperor of Russia, opon the solicitation of tbe Austrians, brings down a large force to crush tbe Hungarians. At present there seems no probable termination ef this deadly straggle, carried on by both parties in the most barbarous manner.
