Dextor Clinkscale might want to think about requesting a police escort in and out of Giants Stadium Sunday night. By the time the Giants and Cowboys line up for their I m. klckoff, Clinkscale's verbal potshots will have incurred the wrath of 43 Giants players and Giants fans.

"I think it's just a facade that (the Giants) are a potential division winner," Clinkscale, the Cowboys strong safety, aaid Wednesday afternoon during a phone hookup from Dallas. "The Giants are a fake and, right now, they are just Imitating potential conference champions." Clinkscale also took the opportunity to take a potshot at Giants quarterback Phil Simms. "Phil Simms Is a winner. He's strong. He's capable of going 0 for 8 and then killing you.

But I don't think he's a great quarterback. He may be some day, but right now, ha Isn't." Clinkscale said on Monday that the Giants "have a great defense but an offense that goes on the myth that Phil Simms is a great quarterback, which he Isn't." Simms declined to comment cause when the sun sets and the storm begins, 'Thurman's Thieves' are going to steal everything." "Thurman's Thieves" is the nickname Clinkscale has given the Dallas secondary. The Cowboys have Intercepted II passes In their first four games. At their current pace, the Cowboys would break the league record of 49 interceptions for one season. Clinkscale, incidentally, does not have an Interception.

Dennis Thurman, the Dallas nickel back, echoed most of Clinkscale's verbal jousts Wednesday afternoon "My man Clinkscale Is pumped, but it's our sentiments exactly," said Thurman. who has three of the Cowboys' 11 Interceptions. "We feel like we've got to go to New York and take It to the Giants. If you don't take it to them, we're going to get blown out." The Giants appeared more amused than angered by Clinkscale's and Thurman's barbs. Linebacker Harry Carson felt the verbal warfare was uncalled forL "Most guys have too much class for mouthing off' said Carson.

"You cant Intimidate through the media or with words, especially a football player. Talking doesn't do anything. All it does Is show people throughout the league that you don't have any I Phil Simms, being sacked by Philadelphia's Ken Clarke last Sunday, will have to remain in The Associated Press more of an upright position if he is to refute Dextor Clinkscale's comments. Staub is all business at plate Continued from page 1C Milwaukee Brewers. "No one is better at thinking at the plate.

He takes a pitcher deeper into the count more than any hitter I've ever seen," said Jim Frey, former Mets batting coach and present manager of the Chicago Cubs. This could well be Staub's last year playing for the Mets. though he says discussions have been held to insure he will stay with the club in some capacity. Baseball fans" are keenly aware Staub's at bats are numbered. He was cheered everywhere he went this spring training and in almost every city during the regular season even in the major league cities he has left, he is warmly greeted.

"The reaction of the crowd has been very gratifying." said Staub, "Sometimes I'm actually surprised by it. I definitely appreciate It. I think it is their way of recognizing my success over a long period of time, my determination in the last 10 years." "I have never been fast, but no one runs much harder on the base paths. I'm going to keep pushing myself this winter. But next year the Mets have to make a decision about me.

hey have a lot of good young players. I don't tend to be a problem. If it's the best thing for the organiza tion. then I'll be back." "I think there's a chance he'll be back," said Johnson. "He could have been more valuable this year if it wasn't for the Injuries we had to the team.

But he can't run the bases. If we can afford that I like having Rusty on the ballclub. That will be the discussion between Frank Ca then (the CM) and myself during the off season" Like any good hitter. Staub is constantly analyzing data to make the most of each at bat, "I do attempt to go to the plate with some idea of what I want to Staub. who ranks 10th on the all time major league pinch hit list.

"You know the ballpark you're going to be hitting In, you know the weather, the wind conditions, and you (see the defense their playing against you. You have to know the umpire. That's second grade, second semester with me. But when I go to the plate, it's mostly myself and the pitcher and sometimes the catcher who is going to be doing the signal calling. "Once It's two you battle your butt off." Staub's value to the Mets goes beyond his pinch hittlng prowess and his hitting tips to younger teammates, some more than half his age.

Besides being heavily involved in New York area charities and the community as the owner of an Eastside eatery renowned for its ribs, he is a reliable guide through the unsteady terrain of a pennant race for a young team. His sense of humor is a salve that can quickly remove the sting of defeat, "When you win? it's easier to be loose," said you can make it loose for everybody, it's that much easier to handle losing. "It was a great shock to lose to the Giants.

We didn't lost to the Giants twice. They beat us twice. We're going to try to do something about It." Clinkscale fired the first salvos for Sunday's game in the Tuesday editions of the Dallas Morning News. He. told Cowboys beat reporter Gary Myers that he had a few things to say about the Giants.
