John last night raided the town. They looted the hardware store of the town trader Brooks, securing ten runs, two revolvers, one hundred loaded shells, and all the other cartridges he had, three kegs of powder, and a large quantity of shot. There were sixty in the party. The halfi breeds have sent their children across the Manitoba line, and their encampment Is reported to be In a strong state of defense. There are 40O half breeds and Indians in camp, led by the worst element.

Little Thunder is as intemperate In his speeches as ever. Several families of settlers at and near St. John went south to Holla, this morning for protection. The excitement here Is Intense, and serious trouble Is now apparently certain. Marshal Cronan with hla posse arrived here at 11 a ra, but therwaa not a half breed In eight then.

They are armed with shot guns and 'Winchesters. Two camps of half breed women and children are located on the prairie a mile from St. John. The three powder mills owned by the American Powder Company, situated near the boundary line of Concord, Acton and May nard, were blown up shortly after nine o'clock this and five of the employees, named Clemmena, Jones, Morton, Winslow and Smith, were The mills were located In a secluded place, four miles from the center of this town, and details of the affair have not yet been received. It is known, however, that the first mill exploded at three minutes past o'clock from some cause not yet known. The second mill went up Immediately from the Jar of the first explosion. This set a fire in the grass, which ignited the third some ten mlutes later. The financial loss cannot be stated at present, as It, is not known how much powder there was on hand.

Murray to resign. The mayor has asked them to do so in so msny words For two months it has been common, report that Mayor Strong wanted to get rid of Messrs. Kerwin and Murray, but he wanted them to retire of their own will. The mayor had selected the men whom he would appoint to the board aus their successors. Messrs.

Kerwin and Murray, however, refused to resign, and at last Mayor Strong; was forced, in order to make their places vacant, to ask them to get out A letter has been sent to each of the commissioners. This is what the mayor said in his communication: "Dear Sir: A careful consideration of the present and future needs of the police department leads me to the conclusion that It would be desirable for you to resign your position as police commissioner, to take effect Monday, May 6." Under the power of removal bill. If Messrs. Kerwin and Murray do not resign by that date, they can be removed, and that Is what the mayor In all probability will do. Oenenl Kerwlra has stated that he has never yet retreated under fire, and he will probably let Mayor Strong remove him from office without the formality of sending In, a resignation.

Mr. Murray will probably follow his associate's example. President J. Martin, of the police board, is a Tammany man, and he will probabily go on the sum data. May a.
