4B Poughkeepsie Journal Robert Friefeld's 4Hbk SportsjgflL fadMiw Uaders Boosf Their Margin In Softball Race In Fast Pitch Doublehepder Brewers To Meet New Jersey Rookie Confident Second Time Around HEMPSTEAD "There was a tremendous risk involved in coming to the New York Jets football camp. I took a chance coming here but I'm confident I'm going to make Dennis Cambal, a 6 foot running back from William and Mary, is one of the few free agents with a chance of making it in professional football. "The coaches have been very impressed with him," said Jets assistant publte realtions director Jim Trecker. "He haa been a They think, he can play fullback and tight end." Cambal's prior experience with pro football hasn't been good. He was drafted 14th by the Oakland Raiders last year.

"I made all the cuts but was taxied and then released," he explained. "I definitely would have been better off if I was cut earlier. It's difficult when you stay for all the cuts. When I was released, the rosters for all the other clubs were set. Cambal took a big chance.

After he left Oakland, he found a job teaching English in West Yarmouth, on the southern shore of Capd Cod. "I could have taught this year but I resigned," he said. "Teaching jobs are hard to find and I'm sure my position has been filled." A rookie gets $14.50 per day in training camp. Veterans get the daily allowance plus a small fee for exhibition games. "Every ballplayer has his own confidence and I think I can olay in the backfield here," Cambal said.

"From what I heard, you get a fair opportunity here and I've found it to be true. As a free agent, that's what you strive for and that's what I've gotten." What's the most difficult task that a rookie faces? "Learning how to react to situations is most important," Cambal said. "You have to know the plays but you also(have to know how to react." Cambal was switched from fullback to tight end and that only added to his difficulties. "I had to learn the tight end 'spot quickly," he noted. "I'm hesitant about making mistakes.

Once I get myv assignments down I can play more naturally. Reading coverages is really important at tight end." The Jets still have to cut about 25 players. "It's a game of numbers at the end," Cambal said. "A lot of good athletes have to be cut loose. Whoever the coaches feel is most valuable to the overall situation stays." In his second shot at the big time, Cambal hopes he will be one of the newcomers that sticks around.
