8A STATE FRIDAY, APRIL 18. 2003 POUQHKEEPSIE JOURNAL Driver gets 30 years in armored - truck heist 1h Associated Pratm ROCHESTER The driver of an armored truck robbed of $10.8 million in 1990 drew a 30 - year prison sentence Thursday for helping carry out what was then the largest holdup of its kind in US. history. "You have caused immeasurable pain to many, many people," VS. District Judge Dayid Larimer admonished Albert Ranieri, 38, who pleaded guilty in December to a federal racketeering conspiracy charge. "You certainly deserve each and every day of that sentence." The robbery remains under investigation, the money is still missing and Ranieri did not implicate anyone else. Ranieri said he invested more than $650,000 from the robbery in stocks, a limousine business and drugs, including cocaine smuggled from California. Ranieri also admitted executing nightclub owner Anthony Vaccaro in May 2000, though other charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, were dismissed. The Armored Motor Services of America truck was taking unmarked cash to the Federal Reserve Bank in Buffalo in June 1990 when its crew pulled over to buy coffee and sandwiches at a convenience store in the Rochester suburb of Henrietta. Armed robbers boarded the truck, drove it to a nearby wooded area, unloaded more than a ton of cash and made a clean getaway. Ranieri was found tied up, but he soon came under investigation. In 1992, he was arrested with his Mather but bank robbery charges were dropped when it was learned an informant was in jail at the time he claimed to have seen the stolen money. However, during an undercover drug investigation two years ago, Ranieri boasted in a hotel room bugged by the FBI that he'd burned nearly $100,000 of the missing booty in a barbecue pit to avoid being arrested. "What do I care? I mean, I got a million dollars," he said in one videotaped recording. The Associated Press Albert Ranieri is escorted from the Federal Building in Rochester Dec. 3 after he pleaded guilty to federal racketeering charges. eggnco The Work and Ptqy Outfitters Feel fetter Look Great!
