By Rich Thomasclll Jotraal ittil PENFIELD The Town of Wappinger arrived two hours early Friday for a little pre game batting practice before its New York State Junior League Baseball semifinal against Amherst. But all the batting practice in the world wasn't going to stop the pitching of Amherst's Joey Hoehman or the hitting of the Killer B's.

Hoehman fired a four hitter while the Killer B's leadoff hitter Bryan Newton, second batter Brian Tubin and third batter Brian Donley reached base a combined 10 times in 12 trips to the plate as Amherst eliminated the Town of Wappinger, 10 1. Amherst will play today for the state championship. Wappinger, the defending state champ, scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning and that was it Amherst then tallied 10 unanswered runs "We got beat at our own game," said Town of Wappinger manager Dick Meybohm "Bunting, stealing, getting the timely hit. They manufactured runs today. "It's a tough loss but I'm extremely proud of the boys." While Amherst manufactured runs, Wappinger had its troubles against Hoehman The lanky right hander wasn't overpowering, just careful where he placed his pitches.

"He vanes his speeds and that's what makes him effective," said Amherst manager Bob Ingalsbe. "I just rear back and try to throw stakes," said Hoehman. "If they're going to hit it, fine. I just rely on the defense." The outcome of this game was opposite of how it began. Wappinger tallied first when Chip Mulkins got on by a fielder's choice, stole second and moved to third on an error by the Amherst third baseman.

He scored when Paul Fragoso broke for second and the return throw to catcher Donley was late. Amherst hat! two golden chances to score in each of the first two innings but couldn't capitalize. With none out in the first inning, a runner at second base was picked off by catcher Paul Fragoso. In the second inning, another runner was caught off third base with one out when he hesitated on a slow grounder up the line. When he finally decided to retreat back to third, Bobby Avon flipped to shortstop Rich Cohen covering the bag and the Wappinger All Stars were out of another jam.

That prompted Ingalsbe to call an impromptu team meeting to start the third inning and the manager told his team to, "Just listen to the coaches. If we tell you to run and you get thrown out, it's our fault." The advice apparently worked. Aaron Kent led off with a walk and stole second. Newton dropped down a bunt single, as did Tubin to load the bases. With two strikes, Donley sat on a curve ball from Wappinger starter Leon Harla and ripped a two run double down the left field line.

"I was looking curve," said Donley. "He always threw it with two strikes." Harla was replaced by Mark Ciccarelll after the hit, but Amherst added two more runs In the inning on a fielder's choice and an error. In the fourth, Newton started things off with a single, followed by another tingle from Tubin. Up stepped Mr. Donley again, who promptly whacked a long double to the left center field fence, plating both runners and giving Amherst a 6 1 lead.

"That time (Ciccarelll) threw me a low ball, right down the middle, so I cranked it," said Donley. Amherst put the game away in the top of the sixth by scoring four runs, including RBI singles by Kevin Reynolds and John Wiezer "and a bases loaded walk by Newton off of Wappinger's third pitcher, Bobby Avon. Town of Wappinger did have its chances against Hoehman, but each time the pitcher worked his way out of trouble. In the third, Paul Salvanti led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a fielder's choice. But Hoehman speared a line drive right back up the middle off the bat of Mulkins and doubled Salvanti off third to end the inning.

In the sixth, Wappinger loaded the bases with none out and couldn't score.
