At least, once again, the majority of metropolitan critics are beating their breast's and threatening to quit. But It seems to me It's all too easy to knock TV. It seems, In fact trite.

If you accept commercial television as a mass entertainment and news medium, if you don't expect it fo assume the lead in forming the nation's cultural taste, the new season brings a fair measure of cheer. First of all, a pat on the back to ABC. The Avis of the networks has tried harder and it shows. With "Journey to the Unknown," produced in England by Hitchcock's old associate, Joan Harrison, the network has given us a one-hour- a-week treat of beautifully directed, flawlessly acted, sophisticated terror. With "That's Life," the Robert Morse musical comedy vehicle, it has given us a weekly free ticket to Broadway, the best of Broadway.

Although the ihow has a third-act problem, it is still better than the stale ex- travangazas that comprise current offerings. With "Here Comes the Brides," the virgins-meet-lumberjacks story, it has presented us with a charming family show that is neither a situation comedy nor a Western. ABC also deserves an A for effort for "The Mod Squad," 'The Outcasts," and "Land of the Giants." myself cannot sit through any of these 3, but' I ike their premises. In "Julia" and "The Ghost of Mrs. Muir" NBC has 2 winners may stop the talk that situation comedy is passe.

But 'Adam-12" is old hat, and "The Outsider" just bad. As for CBS's new series, I not comment except t'o say hat "Blondie" must have been dredged up from some 1948 memo left by some long-departed executive. Now a word about the cause elebre of the season: violence. Over the summer the networks on a much-publicized slic- ng and reshooting spree, and on the whole, the fall's heroes and villains do battle in fairly civilized fashion. Many, however, feel the networks have not done enough.

Some reviewers cannot let a column go by without shaking a finger; a few go so far as to count the number of objectionable blows. Although I do not condone pointless violence, I think the issue is entering the realm of the absurd. The U.S., after all, is undergoing a social revolution, so I cannot understand why people are shocked to find violence so prevalent in national life. Surely the ghetto child at the TV screen can cull stories from his personal experience that no network, at any time, would dare to Last week Thomas Hoving, chairman of the National Citizens Committee for Public Broadcasting, in his attack on A.T.&.T. and the commercial networks, dismissed commercial television as "trivia." Although I have great respect for TV Laffs 'AHA? THAT'S WHERE VOU Ml Off YOUR Bf KR By MARILYN BECK Mr.

Jfovfng, and great belief in the cause of bettering and ox- paneling public television, I take umbrage at his sweeping use of "tTivla." Apart from the networks' news programs and specials, which are frequently excellent, a few of the series themselves do offer intelligent dramatisa- tions of contemporary Issues. For example, this week Chief Ironside defended a black militant, and "Dragnet" illustrated the measures taken by Los Angeles to ensure peace following the assassination of Dr. King. "Judd for the Defense," against, a background of white and black militancy, explored the Negro's feelings about our judicial system. Then there is Julia.

The show has been criticized for presenting too bland a treatment of the Negro's struggle in white society. But, to me, that blandness is a virtue. Julia just may slip into the hearts of a lot of ordinarily biggoted people who would have turned out a more militant, ghetto-dwelling heroine. To be sure, the networks do feed us a lot of trivia. Judging them as a mass entertainment medium, they are not being entertaining enough.

But unlike Mr. Hoving, whom I suspect would censor our viewing if he could, I'm not going to begrudge anybody his baked potato. In these frightening, frantic times, if somebody finds release and relaxation in "The Beverly Hillbillies," leave him alone. Anyway, why should anybody watch the tube all night'. There are, as the song says, "places to go and people to see," not to mention books to read, and radio to listen to.
