TUN HAYS DAILY NEWS, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1965 Demons Barely Get By Hays High, 12-6 A Hays High fumble on an attempted punt paved the way for the winning touchdown as the Dodge City Red Demons pulled out a 12-6 win over the Indians in a West Central Kansas League game played at Dodge City Friday night. The win for the Red Demons gave them sole possession of the number one spot in the loop standings with a 4-0 mark. Hays High meanwhile suffered its third loop setback and dropped the Indians out of contention. The fumble that up the winning TD for the Demons came with 2:35 left in the game. With fourth down and five to go on the Dodge City 40-yard line the Indians decided to settle for the tie and sent Terry Enright back to punt.

The snap from center was high and went through the hands of Enright. Enright recovered the ball and in an attempt to get the ball off again he was hit and the ball fell loose. Dodge City's Gerald Pool then scooped up the ball and dashed all the way to the eight where he was overtaken by Ken Brungardt. Two plays later, Dodge City's fine little quarterback Mike Montgomery went over for the winning score from two yards out. After a scoreless first quarter, the Red Demons scored first, getting a touchdown with 10:26 left in the second period.

The TD came on a one-yard plunge by the Demons' little fullback, Louis Dorsey. The point after, a kick, was blocked by Donnie Hertel. Hertel turned in a fine defensive game for the Indians. The score climaxed a 35-yard drive that started after Terry Enright got off a short punt. The drive was highlighted by a 24-yard, pass from Montgomery to Hughs.

At intermission time, the score still stood at 6-0, but with only five plays recorded in the third period, Hays High's tall end Greg Robinson picked up a Dodge City fumble and raced 40 yards for the score. The kick for the point after by Bob Blazer was no good. The Indians, once again played their best ball in the second half. The best the Red Demons could do against the Indians' solid defensive team in the last two periods was 17 yards. Hays High's Ken Brungardt was the leading ball carrier of the game as the big senior fullback ripped off 67 yards on 19 carries.

Next on the list for the Indians was Terry Enright who had 35 yards on six carries. This was probably Enright's best running for the season. Norb Brungardt, on three carries, had 15 yards. Dorsey was tops for the winners with 32 yards on 15 carries. Next was Mike Barhydt with 16 yards on seven attempts.

He was followed by Tony Guenthener with 13 yards on five carries. Mark Hartman was the Indians' defensive ace with a total of 13 tackles. Next for the Indians were Enright, Hertel, Blazer and Bob Schmidt with! six tackles each. Schmidt also! blocked a kick for an attempted point after. During an 18-year Nebraska Bombs Colorado LINCOLN, Neb. ranked Nebraska bombed Colorado With long gains and scoring spectaculars Saturday, including a 95 yard run touchdown, and whipped the previously undefeated Buffaloes 38 to 13. The big thriller for a homecoming crowd of 54,110 came late in the first quarter of the Big Eight game after a Colorado punt had put Nebraska in shadow of its own goal. Quarterback Fred Duda hit end Freeman White with a pass, and White outhustled Colorado defenders to score. It was the season's sixth straight victory for Nebraska.

For Colorado it was the first lost after three victories and two ties. Colorado defenders, who had allowed opponents only 28 points in five games, contained Nebraska rushes moderately well, but couldn't stop the Husker air attack. The nation's top scoring and top.rushing team going into the contest, Nebraska gained 149 yards on the ground and 223 by air. Colorado was held to two field goals on boots of 34 and 36 yards by Frank Rogers in 'the first half, but pushed across a touchdown with minutes remaining of the game. Dennis Drummond intercepted a Nebraska pass and ran it to Nebraska's 20, A Bemie Mcall pass to Tad Polumbus and a short run advanced the ball to the 7.

Sophomore halfback Larry Plantz skirted end to score. A punt reception fumble by Plantz early in the game was recovered by Nebraska's Harry Wilson on the 50 to set up the first Nebraska score. A 16-yard Duda pass to Tony Jeter coupled with a 15-yard penalty put Larry Wachholtz in position to kick a 35-yard field goal into a 22-mile-an-hour wind. Wachholtz, the country's punt return leader, ran back the ensuing Colorado kick 60 yards before being downed on Colorado's 12. Wilson dived one yard for a touchdown four plays later.

A later first half touchdown run by Duda and a 14-yard scoring pass from Duda to White put Nebraska in front 31-6 at the intermission, and substitute quarterback Bob Churchich fattened the margin with a fourth quarter touchdown after a scoreless third period. A fumble recovery by Barry Alvarez on Colorado's 20 made the final never in trouble. Its linebacking corps, headed by All-America candidate Carl McAdams, forced K-State to run inside the ends on most occasions and its hard- rushing forwards kept the Wildcats' -Vic Castillo, the league's leading passer, off balance all afternoon. Fullback Larry Brown paced the Oklahoma attack with two touchdowns, slamming over from the 1 and from the 2, but it was the slashing running of halfback Tommy Pannell and cat-quick keeper plays by quar- tally possible. Oklahoma wasted no time in shattering Kansas State's hopes for ah upset victory for its homecoming fans as it rolled to an easy 27-0 Big Eight victory Saturday. It was the Sooners' second straight league victory and K- terback Gene Cagle that dealt K-State the most misery. Kansas State's deepest penetration came late in the game when it moved from its own 49 t6 the 00 17 before Castillo proved three straight incomplete passes. Ballard had a shot at him on the 15 but Crosshite shook him off and went in standing up.

Oklahoma moved 65 yards in 10 plays for its second touchdown. Cagle slipped through the line on a 12-yard keeper for the touchdown. The hard rushing Sooner backs punished the K-State defense for 342 yards, their btfst offensive output in winning two losing three this year.
