Congress has authorized a new mint at Philadelphia to replace the one there now but no money has been appropriated. As it is, the Philadelphia and Denver mints, working on virtually a 24-hour day, seven-day week basis, will produce 4.1 billion pieces of change in the year which ends next June 30 but it has been estimated that the nation's commerce could use 6 billion.

No Shortage Of U.S. Coins Found in Area While the U.S. Treasury has expressed concern over the coin shortage which has become steadily worse during the Christmas shopping rush, spokesmen at local banks said today the shortage apparently has not evidenced itself here. In the last few months, The AsPress reported from Washington," D. the Treasury has tried not to call attention to the shortage, apparently on the theory that publicity would lead to hoarding.

But the shortage was obvious before the start of the Christmas season. There are now shortages in every denomination except silver dollars. The supply is tight in almost every area of the nation. Some banks have been asking the public to keep their coins in circulation. Some companies which rely.

heavily on coins in their business have been shipping large amounts from one area to another. Tied to Sales The shortage is said to be due to good business in retail sales and increased use of vending machines, parking meters and other such devices. Demand for coins usually reaches a a a a a a a a peak about Dec. 15, but Treasury officials apparently are bothered more about the prospect of continued shortages than about the current dearth of change. A Treasury spokesman expressed the concern in a terse statement after it was reported that a House committee had decided not to take action in the near future on- a $500,000 appropriation 15 Players Picked For Northern Team MONTGOMERY, (UPI) The Blue Gray Association must select five more players to round out the Northern squad for the 26th annual classic here Dec.

Clay Notes Nomination Honor SYRACUSE Gen Lucius D. Clay says he sees no prospect of a darkhorse gaining the Republican presidential nomination. But the retired army general said that, if he were offered the nomination, it- "would be an honor." Clay reiterated, however, that he was not a candidate for nomination and added that the G.O.P. standard bearer. next year would be a man who actively sought the nomination.

"No one should be the nominee of his party unless he works for the' nomination and demonstrates what he stands for," Clay told newsmen. He was in Syracuse last night to address the 50th Anniversary Dinner of Manufacturers Association of Syracuse. In. his speech, Clay cautioned against any drastic reduction of United States ground forces in Europe because of what he termed the adverse psychological affects such a cut would have on this nation's European allies. At the same time, he proposed that European members of the North Atlantic Treaty, Organization increase their defense commitmets and aid to developing nations.

These NATO members, he said, "should be prepared to support our efforts elsewhere."
