£100 paying for the sanio as soon as it can be melted and assayed A great many people are ignorant of the fact that the government buys gold outside ot the mints The mo ment the assayer begins to drum trade too that moment he drives it away By such action he causes tho public to believe that he represents a private company speculating on its purchases This idea is encouraged by tho gold buyers jewelers pawn brokers andthers who would prefer a field clear of tho United States As a matter of fact it makes no differ ence to the assayer whether he re ceives one ounce or one million ounces as he is paid a certain fixed salary Ho receives anything in 1 he shape of gold whether it be the so called retorts bars dust or scraps Whatever shape it is in he takes it fur what it is worth Tho government pays the expense of as certaining its worth The process of receiving and dis posing of the gold is of considerable interest On delivery it is deposited on scales capable of weighing 5000 command by order of Gen Lee of two of the brigades of Gen Pender who had been wounded These were both of North Carolina troops commanded by II Laue and Alfred Seales On taking command of these troops entire strangers to me and wishing as far as I could to inspire them with con fidence I addressed them brittle or dered that no gun should be fired until the enemy's line was brokenand that I should advance with them to the furthest point When the charge coiuinenced about 3 I followed Pettigrew division) about one hundred and fifty yards in rear a sufficient distance to prevent the adverse fire raking both ranks as we marched down the slope Not withstanding the losses as we ad vanced the men marched with the deliberation and accuracy of men on drill I observed the same in Petti line When the latter was within one hundred or one hundred and fifty yards from the Emraetts burg road they seemed to sink into tho earth under the tempest of fire poured upon thorn passed over the remnant of their line and imme diately after some one close by my left sung out cheers for the Old North State when both brig ades sent up a hearty shout on which I said to my aid I believe those fine fellows are going into tho lines'' They did get to the road and drove ttie opposing line trom it They con tinued there somo minutes discharg ing their pieces at the enemy The loss here was fearful I know that no troops could long endure it I was anxious to know how things went on with the troops on our right and taking a quick bnt deliberate view ot tho held over which Pickett had advanced I perceived that tho tire seemed to slacken there and men in squads were falling back on tho west side of tho Eranettsburg road By this I inferred that Pick cit'n diiiidtm had heyn rrpuhed and if so that it would be a useless sacrifice of lire to continue the contest I therefore did not attempt to rally the men who began to give back from the fence As I followed tho retiring line on horseback at a walk to the crest of Seminary Ridge under the increas ing discharge of grape shell and musketry I had cause to wonder how any one could escape wounds or death On reaching tho summit of the ridge I found the men had fallen into line behind some rudo defenses 1 said is right my biavu fel lows stand to your ground and we will presently serve these chaps as they have us" for by ill tho rules of warfare the ederal troops should (as I expected they would) have marched against our shattered col umns and sought to cover our army with an overwhelming defeat Tn turning over the command to Gen Lane I used some emphatic expressions of commendation for tho gallant behavior of these men lint atn sure I did not use the profane terms which Gen Lane quotes ns my language Being severely wounded and una tle to follow tne army tn its retreat I made no report of the battle or re turns of killed and wounded Gen Lauo and Gon Scales have done this which sliows the fearful loss of these two brigades iu tho charge of Jltly W1 In a published letter to Hon Jno I) Daniel of Virginia Gen Trim ble also says Sly men were the last to leave the field or Ike charge This know as I rode in tho line between the two brigades from the start down to the Lmmetts bnrg road passing over the wreck of division Before my line recoiled under a concentrat ed fire from my front and left I look ed to the right where Pickett's men had been seen to advance and beheld nothing but isolated and scattered rem nants of that splendid line When wo reached the Emmetts bnrg road tho terrible fire right in their faces with their comrades melting away around them onr line slowly began to yield or rather ceased to advance beyond the road It was there as 1 still sat on my horse wounded and at the road that my aid Charley Grogan said the men are falling back shall I rally Before reply ing I looked again to our riqht for the effect of Pickett's charge but could see nothing but a few men in squads mov ing to the rear and at a considerable dis tance from the Emmettshurg road It was there after a brief but deliber ate view of tho field that I said Charley the best thing these brave follows can do is to get out of So mounting my horse from which I had alighted with the help of Grogan we followed at a walk out men to the rear who marched back sullenly and slowly in almost as good order as they had advanced aud I halted them on the summit of Semi nary Ridge On the presumption that the enemy would pursue us I here prepared for defense and feel ing faint from iny wound turned over the command to Geu Lane Thus I am sure that my car uiiand con tinued the contest some tie after Pickett's force had been dispersed not that we fought better but because as a sec ond line we did not reach the enemy quite as soon as the troops on our right but maintained onr ground ter they had been driven back men were nearer the enemy at the start and did bear the brunt bra vely but were not the only of Assurance?
