TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1962 THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL PAGE ELEVEN ChildsWill Take Charge Of Ballots LANSING (UPI) -State Police Commissioner Joseph A. Childs will be asked to take responsibility for securing ballots cast in the Nov. 6 lieutenant governor's race if a recount is sought by Republican candidate Clarence A. Reid. Reid lost the contest to incumbent Democratic Lt.

Gov. T. John Lesinski by 3,017 votes, of more than 2.67 million votes cast. Lesinski, acting in a of Gov. John B.

Swainson while the chief executive is out of the state, said Monday he would order the ballot boxes and records from the election impounded if Reid maintains his determination to seek a recount. The official canvass showed Lesinski took 1,337,872 votes and Reid got 1,334,855. Lesinski, who said he would take the impounding action "in the interest of fair play," prob ably will not be the one to issue the official order for it, however. Swainson likely will be back before any such action would be in order. The Board of State Canvassers is due to meet Tuesday.

A candidate has 48 hours after the canvass is completed to file petitions for a recount in a statewide race. Lesinski notified Childs it would be his responsibility to maintain the ballots until a recount was conducted. Reid has indicated he plans to seek the recount although it would cost him $5 for each precinct he asks to be counted. Lesinski would also have the opportunity to ask for precincts to be tallied over again The winner would get his recount filing fee returned; The loser would not Lesinski returned to work from a Florida vacation Monday to learn the final canvass figures and Reid's decision to ask for the recount. "I didn't think Clarence would go ahead," he said.

"To me it seems as if a recount would be fruitless for him. Despite the fact there is less than one vote a precinct difference, most of my votes come out of machine precincts and I don't think he could make them up." Secretary of a James M. Hare last week notified county clerks to take extra precautions to insure the security of the ballots and voting records because of the possibility that Reid would seek a recount. Norton, 26, Owosso. was held in jail in lieu of $10,000 bail today in connection with a swindle plot against an elderly- Kalamazoo truck farmer. Norton was brought here from Chicago Saturday to face charges in connection with the bilking of S759 from Dingman Pnester, rural Kalamazoo. He appeared in Municipal Court Monday and demanded examination. The judge set Nov 26 as the date and set bail at $10.000.

Priester told police Norton and a man he later identified as Thomas A Abshire, 30, no known address, posed as social security agents when they visited his home in September. Priester said Norton told him Priester owed the government $3,750 in delinquent social security payments and unless he made a down payment of at least $750 immediately, his property would be confiscated and he would go to jail. Priester paid the two men $759 when they returned to his home a few hours later. An alert neighbor recorded the license number of Norton's car and an alert was put out for him when Priester's brother reported the swindle. Noton and Abshire were caught in Chicago.

Norton waived extradition and was returned here. Abshire escaped, but later was recaptured and returned to Chicago where he refused to waive extradition. Democrats Plan Own Ball DETROIT (UPI) The extent of Michigan's political rift was underlined Monday by reports that a and Republicans planned separate inaugural balls. Earlier this week Republican George Romney called on Democratic members of the State Administrative Board to join in mutual planning of inauguration activities. Arthur Elliott, a Romney aide, said Monday that Democrats have rebuffed GOP invitations to hold a joint inaugural ball on January 1 after Romney has been sworn into office.

Elliott, Pleasant Ridge, who directed Romney's campaign, said the Republican celebration would be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Lansing Civic Center. Democrats have scheduled their inaugural ball for New Year's Eve also at the Lansing Civic Center. Elliott said that Democrats would be welcome to attend the GOP festivities, although he said he hadn't heard whether Republicans would be invited to the Democrats' party.

"Both parties will take part in the official ceremonies at 11 a.m. on New Year's Day," Elliott said, "but other than that they will go their separate ways." In a letter to Democratic Secretary of State James Hare this week, Romney said. "The primary meaning of the Mov. 6 election, in my opinion, is that the people of Michigan expect their public officials to work together to meet the challenges facing this state without primary concern for party labels." He added, "It seems to me, we as elected officials can demonstrate the unity the people have indicated they expect by joining together in at least part of the inaugural activities Heidi Weissmuller, 19, Killed in Auto Crash LACUNA BEACH, Calif.
