2, 7:20, p.m. In Frond's world, mountains talk, rivers sing Continued from page 17 loved it. I loved the richness of the detail of his style," Henson said. "I knew we could build his creatures; that we could translate his style into three dimensions. "Originally, I thought that Brian would just do the drawings and my team would build them.

But, as it worked out, he wound up overseeing an enormous shopful of people. "The result is that I don't know of any film that has been so completely designed by one person's vision. After all, he got to design not only the scenery and costumes, but the entire cast as well." The collaboration appears to have been a case of opposites attracting, Froud's vision of the world of "The Dark Crystal" is the antitheses of Henson's sunny, inviting Muppet world. In Froud's world, the line between the animate and the inanimate magically blurt mountains talk, rivers sing; the most unlikely things are alive and not always friendly. In this dark, menacing land, a nice guy like Kerrait would probably end up as an appetizer on the banquet table of some snaggle toothed Skektis.

Froud gives the impression of being rather elfin himself. He stands about feet 7 inches tall, ills pale English complexion is set off by large, probing eyes and a thatch of russet hair. He seems to operate at a speed Just slightly quicker than the rest of the world's. Upon entering it, he claimed an empty table, ordered a gin and tonic and reminisced about the beginnings of his art.

Froud's fondness for the fantastic has its roots in the boggy moors of the English countryside. Froud. an only child, was born in Winchester but grew up in rural Hampshire, about miles southeast of London. "I used to enjoy adventuring very much, wandering in the woods alone," he said. "I loved to climb, trees.

I was never so happy as when I was atop a tree. But I didn't draw. I wasn't that kind of a kid. It was only much later in life that it all took on some meaning I could express." 1 Brian Froud was a successful commercial illustrator but the work frustrated him as an artist. Despite his youthful disinterest in drawing, Froud was accepted at Maidstone Art College in the late 1960s.

It was there that he discovered a love for such master Victorian illustrators as Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham; a love that pre sists to this day. A successful career as a commercial illustrator of paperback book covers and magazines followed graduation from Maidstone, but artistic frustration soon set in. Worried that his work was becoming derivative, he left London hoping to resolve hU conflict by settling in a smaU'cottage in rural Chsgford. It was here, on the edge of a wild moor, in sight of ancient stone walls and tumbling streams, that Froud re discovered the countryside of his youth. His frustration vanished as he found a style he could call his own.

"For some reason," he said, "it all came together in one moment the imagery, the style. It Just seemed to happen. I just did it and there it was. I've been "with that style and imagery ever since." That style echoes not only the great 19th century illustrators he reveres, but also harbors a wealth of elements ranging from Medieval to ancient Celtic and Nordic folk art. Until now, Froud's contribution to the art of illustration has been the easiest to discover in the best sellingselling book "Faeries," which he co wrote and illustrated with his friend Alan Lee in 1978, just before he joined forces with Henson.

Henson Introduced Froud to far more than the world of puppetry. As bis role as conceptual designer grew, the solitary artist had to learn the art of collaboration. "It's easy doing the drawings; easy agreeing on 'the look'," he said. "But to work with other artists sculptors, doll makers, costumers that was Working with scores of such artists to bring his characters to emotional life was a task shared by everyone, especially by the time filming began in the spring of 1 981 at London's EMI Elstree Studios. "The Dark Crystal" is essentially a series of special ef fecta done the hard way.

For example, the characters are all hand made conglomerations of foam rubber (nine tons of the stuff was eventually needed) plastic, fabric, paint, filigree, and pneumatic tubing. Once a character's body was completed, it could be manipulated by a variety of means Including electronics, hydraulics, and traditional puppetry techniques. As many as four technicians could be involved In manipulating a single character. But at the same time, all the film's featured creatures were "performed" by a single actor, The cast of performers contains some familiar names: Henson played both the two feet tall Jen and the nlne feet Iong Skeksis Ritual Master; Frank Oz co directed the film with Henson and played Aughra and the Skeksis Lord Chamberlain; and Muppet veteran David Goelz, known to Muppets fans as The Great Gonzo, played the Garthlm Master, Some of the mime artists and dancers who performed in the film's cumbersome costumes went into rehearsal and training six months in advance of filming, Froud said. With so many actors, technicians and crew members, film sets sometimes began to resemble Grand Central Ox has compared performing the role of the Skeksis Lord Chamberlain to being a pilot flying on instruments.

Henson has said that, at times, working "inside" his Skektis character, it often felt "as If a building had caved In on me." As if these conditions weren't difficult enough, all the film's main characters performed "live'' in front of Axademy Award winner Oswald Morris' cameras. No stop action photography was used. "We discovered that the thing that really brings these things to life was a performer; the special qualities a human brings to the character," Froud said. i Froud made another, even more important discovery while making the film. He met Wendy Midener, a dollmaker from Michigan who had been hired to work on the Gelfllngs.

Two years ago, they were married in Chagford. Froud worries that the complexity of the design may in some ways work against the film's chances of. being a smash hit. "It's so dense with imagery, so totally different from what's been seen before that (the audience) may spend a long time trying to sort out what everything is 'Is that a'crea lure or is It a piece of furniture' you Froud said. "It's very much a movie that demands a lot from itsaudtence.

Its audience has to contribute to it." Despite his fears. Froud says he's ready to do it aU over again. Working with Henson "a genius who's also a wonderful has taught Froud the importance of taking risks; of stretching against established boundaries. "You have to tackle work with hon esty and Integrity. You just do the best you can," he said.

"That's what we've done and I think it "All you can do is try to break new ground, whuch means, of course, you can fall flat on your face.".
