Friday April 25 198C Pourjlikeepsie Journal 9D Dining Out at Locust Tree Inn 12 The Locust Tree Inn Restaurant is as much a delight to be in as to cat in. what with its aura of delicately restored antiquity, its softly playing chamber music, its nicely spaced tables. There seems to be something eye pleasing in every direction, from paintings in gold frames to massive overhead beams to windows framed by woodwork from eras past One room in the oldest section is decorated in a Colonial motif of dried flowers, white stone walls and blue willow plates; another in a later section is done in gold Wallpaper, stuffed Victorian chairs and antique mirrors. Locust Tree sits at the edge of a golf course within walking distance of New Paltz's historic Huguenot Street, billed as the oldest street in America. The original section of this meandering structure was built in 1759 by Abraham Elting, whose family owned it until 1954.

It was a riding school and country club before Gordon and Joanne Kreth purchased it In 1979 for a restaurant Gordon is an engaging and friendly host who walks from table to table in an unassuming red vest and shirtsleeves, somehow setting Locost Tree Ian, 215 Hagae not New Palo. 255 78B8. Description: A 1759 stone bouse with clapboard addition, and a aeries of warm mod comfortable roo mi, decorated la early Americana or elegaat Victorian. There are tioor to celllng windows, lovely woodwork, artwork In gilt frames and crackling fireplaces. Lighting Is soft, table coverings linen and flowers fresh.

The prices are as unassuming as he is. arid the food as inviting. The 16 entrees, which Include a green salad, vegetable and rice or potato, range from 19 75 to $15 25, while the menu's seven appetizers go from $3.25 to $4 50 I have paid as much or more in restaurants that have offered far less in atmosphere, service and taste. This restaurant also takes pains to give diners a real treat in eating, what with its attractive preparation (jelly beans and white flowers served as garnishes) and use of herbs, wine, sauces and fruit The cooking is under the direction of Pat Parson, a 30 year old graduate of the culinary division of the New School for Social Research in Manhattan who began as assistant chef about four years ago. Most of the desserts are prepared by Joanne Kreth, including peanut butter cream cheese pie and various chocolate creations.

The appetizers sampled on two occasions were for the most part luscious; in fact a companion bit into a serving of stuffed mushroom caps ($3.25) and declared. "I died and went to heaven." Sprinkled with grated cheese and accented with lemon, the dish was wonderful. Another delightful creation was shrimp wrapped in prosciutto four large shrimp broiled to a nice crispness in a wrapper of salty meat OUR CLAM BAR IS BACK werj. rn. bat.

Sweet and sour pork ribs was also quite good and nearly a meal in itself for $3.25. The dish consisted of four meaty and very tender ribs smothered in a tomato, green pepper and pinapple sauce that was tangy and a bit spicy. The only appetizer that failed was baked stuffed clams ($3.25) which were bready and dry. Three soups sampled were consistently flavorful including a chunky tomato with dill and black pepper and vegetable beef with a reddish brown broth flecked with mushrooms, carrots, broccoli and celery. Both cost $1.75 and were very special.

The onion soup smothered with Swiss cheese ($3) was much like any other restaurant's but nonetheless good. Recommended among the entrees are canard aux fruits or roast duckling ($11.50) and coquille St Jacques baby bay scallops poached with mushrooms in white wine and browned on top. The duck came out lightly glazed, crisp and shining. The meat was moist and tender and the orange sauce was sweet and delectable. The scallops, served in two large shells with tarragon flavored rice.

were piping hot. a bit sweet and dc ughtlul Flawed but still good was filet mignon chasseur ($15 25). which appeared to have been seared over so high a flame that it was tough and chewy outside The sauce of white wine, tomatoes, mushrooms and herbs was delirious though, as was a side order of warm broccoli vinaigrette Two specials sampled were loin of pork, which came with a wonderful stuffing of raisins, apple and nuts and a tangy brown gravy, and breaded leg of lamb steak sauteed with capers The pork was tender, white and moist highly recommended for those whose tastes veer toward American fare The lamb, though tender, was heavy and somewhat overwhelmed by capers Desserts generally run $2.25, except for a house special. Locust Tree Devil, which was $2.75. It was a rich concoction of devil's food cake, vanilla ice cram, warm chocolate sauce and whipped cream, heavenly if you like that sort of thing which I.

unfortunately, do. Peach mousse was fluffy, flecked with golden peaches and nicely sweet, while lemon custard was tangy with a cake like consistency. The cheesecake was light creamy and generous of portion. Among the other things working for this restaurant are its excellent and elegant service and its attempt to make everything special from the crackers and homemade herb Cheddar cheese that begins every meal to one of the best bloody Marys I've ever had. I look forward to a return visit.
