McMann Poughkeepsie Journal One extra chair sat empty at the end of the visiting team's bench Wednesday evening. It could have been a housekeeping gaffe.

Perhaps someone counted incorrectly. But for the members of the Beacon High School volleyball team, the math added up: There's another Bulldog with them at all times in their hearts and they hope to see him fill that vacant seat soon. "It's hard, but we know that he's always going to be here in spirit," senior hitter Kara Tancredi said of Beacon head coach Ron Pagliaro, who has handed over the Bulldogs' reins this season as he faces a personal challenge his players are sure he'll win. One morning this past summer, Pagliaro woke up unable to walk. Doc 'It's hard, but we know that he's always going to be here in Kara Tancredi, Beacon volleyball player tors visits and medical tests followed; none, though, yielded a clear diagnosis.

Since then, Pagliaro has battled this obstacle from a wheelchair, receiving treatment at Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw. The Journal's attempts to reach Pagliaro have been unsuccessful. While he can't be with his players on a daily basis, Pagliaro remains ever present with them from practicing the skills he instilled in many of the young Bulldogs to cheering "R.P." before and after every match. "I think his presence is missed greatly in the program, in general, but these kids have responded well," said Cathy Schetter, who has taken over the head coaching duties in Pagliaro's absence. "We're all doing the best we can under the circumstances.

"Would we love to have him right next to us every day? Absolutely. But we're going with what we have." When it comes to Pagliaro, it's more than a dozen or so volleyball players missing a coach. He's also an assistant coach for the boys' basketball team at Beacon. He owns a popular ice cream shop in town, one that employs some of the same students who watch him on the sidelines. No, Pagliaro is more than a coach He's a staple around the school and surrounding community.
