renewed and twice refused But last Saturday a special meeting was held and a majotity of the board voted for tho license to run six months Drug Stores Do a Big Whiskey Business tn Durham Durham Dispatch Dec 31st This year the four drug stores that handle whiskey on prescription did a great business Day before yesterday an inspection of the pre scription books by Chief of Police Woodall showed at that time a total of 5899 prescriptions for whiskey had been tilled In this list is not included those that were for whiskey and other things mixed those just for plain whiskey Since then many prescriptions have been filled mak ing a grand total of about 6000 for the year If tho physicians all charged the regular price for pre scriptions the business for the year netted the doctors $6000 In a short while the druggists who sell whiskey will have to get new license It is understood that at least two of those who now handle whiskey on prescription will not apply for license They With the Japanese 1 Tokio Japan Dispatch 2d General Nogi reports that he lias received a letter fromGeneralStoes scl relating to the surrender of Port Arthur The news that the Russian forces at Port Arthur have been reduced to such a st rait that at lastthehcroic commander has been forced to pro pose surrender follows upon a month of reverses The siege began almost with the firing of the first gun in the war now nearly 11 months ago and when perhaps the greatest stronghold in the world was garri soned by 40000 Russian soldiers supported by a formidable squadron of modern battleships cruisers and torpedo boats These warshipshave been destroyed or dispersed until but a few torpedo boats remain in the harbor The garrison at latest accounts had been reduced to about 5000 men On
