Chargers Mix Age and Youth By United Press Internationa The San Diego Chargers have mixed age with youth to brew a team that looks potent enough to win them the Western Division title of the American Foot ball League.

Tobin Rote, 35, supplies the age and John Hadl, 23, supplies the youth. And more than a short snort of either is enough to kayo most any rival. Rote's heroics were mainly Te. sponsible for carrying the Chargers to three victories in their first four games. The vet eran had his troubles Sunday and so the sophomore quarterback from the University of Kansas came off the bench to lead the Chargers to their 24 20 victory over the New York.

Jets. The win enabled the Chargers to take a ltt game lead in the West while the loss left the Jets only a half game ahead of Boston and 'Houston in the East Jackie Kemp Tan for one touchdown and passed for two others to lead the Buffalo Bills to a 35 26 upset of the Kansas City Chiefs and George Blanda threw three touchdown passes as the Houston Oilers defeated the Denver Broncos, 33 24, in Sunday's other AFL games. 'Bos. ton beat Oakland, 20 14, Friday night. Jack Kemp scored on a one yard plunge and passed 63 and 89 yards for touchdowns to give the Bills their victory over the Chiefs.

It was a wide open throwing duel with Kemp con necting on 12 of 24 lot, 300 yards and Kansas City's Len Dawson on 23 of 46 for 210 yards. Cookie Gilchrist also scored two touchdowns for the Bills. Blanda passed for three touchdowns, engineered a fourth, kicked a 38 yard field goal and converted on all Houston's touchdowns except one in a brilliant all around performance. Rookie Bill Tobin scored two touchdowns for the Oilers while rook ie Mickey Slaughter threw two touchdown passes to flanker Bob Scarpitto. THAT SINKING FEELING.

Big MIKE DITKA, the brawny tight end for the undefeated Chicago Bears, scored four touchdowns as the Bears bounced the Los Angeles Rams Sunday, 52 14. Here Ditka is shown bowling over defender A Wlrtphoto CHARLEY BRITT, 17, for one of his scores. The TD came as the result of a pass from quarterback Rudy Bukich. The Bears are now 5 0 and top the Western Division of the National Foodtball League. No Complaints But, 'Too Much Golf Says Palmer After U.S.

Ryder Cup Triumph By DAVID M. MOFFIT I UPI Sports Writer ATLANTA (UPI) Palmer said today that despite the pro and con arguments about the difference' in size in the U.S. and British balls, the biggest trouble with the Ryder Cup, matches is too much golf in too short a time. "I don't know of any other, golf tournament which plays 36 holes a day for three straight days," Palmer, the U.S. team captain, complained.

He suggested that the Ryder Cup matches should be stretched out to at least four each on Thursday and Friday and then 36 on Saturday and Sunday. It was hard to get agreement about the' type of ball used by each team. Team member Gene Littler, whose 6 and 5 final 'day win over veteran Scotsman Tom Haliburton was the most lopsided match of 32, insisted the small ball hurt the British around the greens. But Palmer said it gave the British an advantage Sunday because of the wind. No Complaints On Win Although Palmer complained about the amount of golf, he had no complaint about how his U.S.

team fared in the three day "grind" that ended Sunday evening at Bobby Jones' East Lake Country Club. The U.S. crushed the British 23 tp 9 after turning the final afternoon matches into a TO to tt rout. In fact, the U.S. never lost an afternoon match In the three days as they stormed to this country's 12th victory in the 15th biennial Ryder Cup matches.

The British played the U.S. even in 16 morning rounds, winningwinning six and halving four others for eight points. But. as Palmer aptly put It, the U.S. warmed up with the sun and made a runaway of the 16 afternoon matches winning 14 and halving the other two.

'Needed One Victory The U.S. went into Sunday afternoon's final eight singles matches needing Just one more victory to capture the solid gold Ryder Cup never won by the British In this country. Littler, 33, had the honor of winning the decisive point as he all but ran the 48 year old Hall' burton off the course. He was 7 up after nine holes as he toured the front nine' in a 3 un der par 32, took a bogey 5 on No. 11 for his only loss, then closed out the match on No.

13 earliest end for any of this year's matches. From that point on, it was merely a question of how badly the U.S. would beat the British, It was the biggest margin ever run up in the matches although the U.S. did win 11 1 back in 1947 when the matches were more limited. Two years ago, in England, when eight less foursomes were played, the U.S.

won 14V. to 9Vi. Jets Shot Down San Diego Flashes Power To Edge by New York, 24 20 SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UPI) The San Diego Chargers needed their most awesome display of offensive power to squeeze a 24 20 American Football League victory over the New York Jets in a battle of division leaders Sunday. The Chargers gained 510 net yards, eclipsing their mark of 422 yards set against the New York Titans Nov.

5, 1961. Halfback Paul Lowe, with 161 yards on the ground, helped the club set an all time rushing mark of 287 yards. Quarterback John Hadl shared the spotlight, coming off the bench at halftime with his club trailing 10 3 to replace veteran Tobin Rote. Hadl was discharged from the Army Friday. The Jets, as usual, were badly beaten In the statistics, but almost won the game.

Quarterback Dick Wood launched a 51 yard scoring pass to end Bake Turner on the Jets first play. Coach Weeb Ewbank said the club had been working on the play all week. San Diego took the lead for the first time, 17 10, midway in the third quarter, but the Jets narrowed it to 17 13 on a field goal and moved ahead at the end of the period on a weird 80 yard march in which San Diego was 83 yards and the Jets 15. Lowe cracked seven yards for the winning score midway In fourth period after skirting end for 30 to set it 'up.
