Ills accuracy was a phenomenon. Joe Montana, perhaps the best NFL quarterback ever, is an automatic when he needs to drive his team to a score with less than two minutes remaining In a game His guile in pressure situations is a phenomenon. Tablet's success with the bases loaded might become legendary before his career is complete One inning after Kevin McRey nolds, the starting left fielder, was ejected for arguing a strike three call, his replacement, Tabler, drilled a single, his 40th hit In 80 career at bats with the bases loaded. It scored Keith Miller and Dave Magadan, giving the Mets a 2 1 lead. The opposite field line drive to right center gave him 97 RBI in his 80 bases loaded at bats In his eight year career, he has 457 RBI, meaning almost 25 percent of his RBI have come with the bases loaded Saturday's hit was his second bases loaded single since being acquired by the Mets Aug. 30 His first, which came in Monday night's 10 1 victory over St Louis, also drove in two runs. A month after making that observation, however, McWilliams found himself part of some" thing new For the first time in 17 years as a Division I head coachrArmy's Jim Young opted to go with a split personality quarterback, alternating McWilliams with McMillian every series For the most part the plan worked, as the two quarterbacks co anchored Army's season openingopening 24 7 victory over Holy Cross Saturday However, if the game was meant as a final test for McWilliams and McMillian, then Young will have a hard time deciding between the results McMillian rushed for just four more yards than McWilliams Both quarterbacks were 2 for 4 in the air Asked if he intends to stay with the switching scheme, Young said, "I'd like to have just one quarterback, but I think they both deserve to play and that's the way we intend to do it Then Young added, "The decision was to play them every other series Next week is next week Confused? About the only thing separating the two is McWilliams' better passing ability vs McMillian quicker feet None of this is easy for either quarterback, although both said they were pulling for the other when he was on the field Asked if he felt itchy waiting on the sideline, McWilliams said, Not really, because you feel like you are in the game I am giving the signals to Willie You are totally into the game But do they like sharing the duties? "I can live with it," McMillian said. Two QBs, no huddle overwhelm Holy Cross DyJOHNFERRO Journal stalf WEST POINT Army opened its second century of college football with a familiar cast dancing to a strange and new beat Army Coach Jim Young unveiled a wishbone offense featuring no huddles and in terchangable quarterbacks Alternating between senior Rryan McWilliams and junior Willie McMillian every series, the Cadets overcame first half sluggishness to defeat Holy Cross, 24 7, before 30,880 at Michie Stadium Saturday After some first half troubles with penalties and turnovers, the Cadets re grouped and scored 17 unanswered points behind 253 rushing yards in the second half Meanwhile, Army's defense kept Holy Cross' run and shoot offense from shooting anything but blanks Mike Mayweather, Army's all time career leader in rushing, led the Cadet's with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 30 car nes Senior halfback Calvin Cass added 108 yards on 18 carries "I think the second half, offensively the guys got together," Mayweather said "And that's one of the things about the no huddle. You don get that cohesion out there, and you kind of feel it And I kind of felt that way in the first half And then there was the McQuarterback situation McWilliams, a senior, started the game, but watched junior McMillian run the show every other series Unable to decide between the two after spring and fall preseason practices.

Young chose to go with both McWilliams and McMillian finished practically dead even on the statistical charts The senior rushed 12 times for 57 yards McMillian covered 61 yards on 10 rushes Both were 2 for 4 on pass attempts. See ARMY, page 4D Water key element for today's races ByPETECOUUZZO Journal lUtf Charlie Sprauer wants plenty of water today The race director for the Dutchess County Classic isn't praying for rain He just wants to make sure there is enough water for the more than 700 runners expected to compete in three races today. "My main concern is always water, water, water," Sprauer said The 12th annual C. Classic consists of a marathon (26 2 miles), half marathon (IS 1 miles) and five kilometerkilometer race (3 1 miles). The marathon and half marathon begin at 9 a and the 5 starts at 9 15 All races begin and end at the Wapplnger Recreation Area on Robinson Lane.

To get to the rec area from Poughkeepsle take Route 376 into FishklU Plains and make a left on Robinson Lane The facility is about two miles In, and it is on the right Because of its early date, water is a big worry for Sprauer. Running a half marathon and marathon dehydrates competitors in even cool weather. With the potential for warm weather, water is essential "Last year on race day, everything was falling into place," Sprauer said "But then it was 8 05 (am) and the Culligan guy wasn there yet" The "Culligan guy" showed up to replenish runners on an overcast but humid day last year This year, Sprauer went around to all the houses along the course route and put fliers in mailboxes "We told them were having this race and to make sure they keep their dogs inside," Sprauer said "But we also asked them if they would supply extra water on the course." This year's preregistered entries are a bit ahead of last year's pace. As of Wednesday, 104 marathoners had entered, up from 99 last year The half marathon grew the most up from 251 to 298 The 5 stayed about the same, with 172 entrants. With race day entrants, this year's Classic could attract the largest field in race history.

Defending marathon champion Geoffrey Marchant of Lakeville, will return to the scene of his past successes. The 40 year old schoolteacher won last year's race in 2 hours, 39 minutes and 13 seconds. Dutcheounly September Strong defensive day sends Red Foxes over Pace, 23 1 3 He also won the race in 1986 with a time of 2 39 18 In the women's marathon division, Christine Gibbons of West Milford, has entered Last year, Gibbons set a course record by winning in 2 5416 Half marathon champion Steve Schallenkamp will not be running the 13 1 mile race He said he might run the 5 Women's half marathon champion Catherine Sagnis is not entered Both 5 titlists Ken Zui dema and Mansa Sutera did not preregister The first Dutchess County Marathon was run in 1979, as a three loop course beginning and ending at Freedom Park in LaGrange, The current course is the third different one used. Paul Fetcher of New York and Margarete Deckert, then of La Grangevtlle, were the first winners Steve Perks (2 35 16) and Gibbons hold the marathon race records. The Classic, the largest annual running event in Dutchess County, is run under the auspices of the Mid Hudson Road Runners Club The Poughkeepsle Journal sponsors the race.

ByRICHTHOMASELU Journal staff PLEASANTVILLE Marist College football Coach Rick Pardy gathered his team around him Saturday in a small gymnasium at Pace Uni versity The Red Foxes had just beaten Pace, 23 13, for their second straight victory, and Pardy was addressing the team "It wasn't pretty It was not a pretty win," Pardy said "But I don't think I saw a more beautiful thing in my life than to see (Matt) Daly run with the ball" Daly, a 6 foot, 250 pound defensive end, intercepted a pass and chugged 58 yards for a touchdown with 3 minutes, 15 seconds to pjay to seal Marist 's victory Daly's interception capped a day of big plays for the Marist defense, which bent in the third quarter but didnt break. The Red Foxes had a 17 0 halftime lead but Pace clawed to within 17 13 with a field goal on the second play of the fourth quarter However, on Pace's final three drives, Marist forced a punt and two interceptions. The Foxes had three interceptions and recovered two fumbles against the Setters "I dont want to call our defense a 'Big Play Defense' but it's set up that way," said Marist linebacker Paul Kratehovil, who recovered one of the fumbles "It's set up to make the big hits The defense is predicated on they fact that with everybody playing together, somebody will make the big play," Pardy said "When you put pressure on an opponent they'll breakdown It was the Marist offense that pressured Pace in the first half The Foxes began the game with a 15 play, 80 yard scoring drive. A 20 yard reverse play by Scott DeFalco set up Donald D'Aiuto 1 yard touchdown plunge that gave Marist a 7 0 lead Leading 10 0 midway through the second quarter, Marist faced a fourth and five play from the Pace 31 yard Una Red Fox quarterback Dan O'Donnell rolled left and hit D'Aiuto with a 31 yard touchdown pass to make it 17 0 D'Aiuto, who rushed for 77 yards and caught four passes for 63 yards, made a great diving grab at the goal line O'Donnell completed 15 passes In 24 attempts for 172 yards. His coun terpart Pace quarterback Matt Coleman, was 19 for 43 for 235 yards, including an 83 yard scoring strike to Eric Frink Frlnk, a graduate of John Jay High School, caught JO passes for 183 yards But the Setters couldn't get closer than 17 13 and Daly settled matters with his interception Pace was deep in Marist territory following a short punt and on a third down play when Coleman dropped back to pass.

As he brought his arm forward, Colemaa was hit by Thomas Coyne and Joe Rlccardi Daly caught the ball and took off on his scoring run. "I really don't know what hap pened," Daly said "I just saw the ball and grabbed it and took off. The credit goes to the guys who pre sured the quarterback." After a brief rest in the end zone, Daly was mobbed by his teammates "Oh man, I havent been so tired la a while," Daly sail "It's a good thing we do those 50 50 (sprints) In prac tice." "Hey, dont let Matt fool yo Pardy said. "He has great speed; for a guy his size. He really does! And wnen tie caught that ball off, I didnt think the Pace was going the end tone," i audio6 tfr XSh I TrTZXfcMJB.
