Nielsen, 68, a lifelong resident of Pawling, died Saturday, June 22, 2002 at New Milford Hospital in New Milford, Conn. Mr. Nielsen was a foreman at the carpentry shop at Wassaic Developmental Center. From 1954 57, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps at the end of the Korean Conflict He belonged to the Hasler Kamp Post American Legion, and was an avid gardener.

Born in Pawling on Apr. 5, 1934, he was the son of Christian and Catherine Judge Nielsea On July 23, 1957, he married Adeline Lentz in Bloomfield, Ind. Mrs. Nielsen survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gary Nielsen of Woodbury, Conn, and Brian Nielsen of Southbury, two daughters, Debra Japs of Wolcott, Conn, and Tina Gogol of Trumbull, a brother, James Nielsen of Holmes, N.Y; a sister, Varna Tuz of Pawling, and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. Funeral services are private. There are no calling hours. The family requests that contributions in memory of Mr. Nielsen be made to the New Milford Hospital Oncology Department, New Milford, CT 06776.

WHITE LAKE, N.Y. William H. Thelman, 69, a retired employee for New York Telephone Co. and a longtime resident of the area, died Saturday, June 22, 2002 at home. The son of the late William H.

Thelman, Sr, and Martha Pink Thelman, he was born Nov. 15, 1932 in Pine Plains. A charter member of the Bethel Lions Club, he also belonged to the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Monticello Elks Lodge 1544, and the Mahogany Ridge Hunting Club. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Grace M. Thelman, at home; a son, William Thelman III and his wife, Laurie of Bethel, N.Y; a daughter, Cynthia L.

Shook and her husband, Gary of LaGrangeville; three granddaughters, Katie, Kellee and Kassie; a brother in law, William Lee and his wife, Shirley, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 25, from 6 9 p.m. at the Vanlnwegen Kenny, Inc. She also was a member of the United, Methodist Church In Red Hook, the Red Hook Garden Club, the Sons of Norway, and had worked as a decent at Montgomery Place in Barrytown. Born Aug. 20, 1940 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Finn J. and Thelma Tjom Rennie.

On July 31, 1959 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, she married Douglas F. Wicks Sr. In addition to her husband of Red Hook, she is survived by a daughter, Lisa Wicks and her husband, David Armatis of El Cerrito, CA; a son, Douglas F. Wicks Jn, and his wife, Carol L. Wicks of Portland, OR; a grandson, Drew Walter Wicks; a brother and sistersister in law, Dr.

Thomas and Diane Rennie of Fairport, NY, an AFS exchange daughter, Geesoo Javan mardi Reifschneider of California; four nieces, Amie, Andrea, and Alicia Rennie and Cathy Zeilman; a nephew, Thomas Zeilman; a brother in law, Richard Zeilman; and numerous relatives in Norway. LEXINGTON, KY Frederick J. Kopser, 90, of Lexington, Ky. and formerly of Poughkeepsie, died Saturday, June 22, 2002 after a brief illness. Fred rode with his father in a horse drawn wagon, delivering beer to the Staatsburg Tavern. He was the last surviving crew member of the Pough keepsie Highland car ferry, where he worked as engineer, until 1937 at which time the newly complete Mid Hudson Bridge put the ferry out of business.

He then worked on tugboats in New York Harbor and the Great Lakes, serving in the Merchant Marines during World War U. After the war, he joined IBM and was eventually sent to Lexington, Ky. in 1957 to help build the new typewriter facility that is now known as Lexmark He retired as maintenance manager in 1972. He was involved in many civic activities, including volunteer fire chief for the New Hackensack Fire Department and Junior Achievement in Lexington, Ky. He was involved in many activities at Christ the King Catholic Church, where he was a member, and the Knights of Columbus, where he was a fourth degree member.

Born in Poughkeepsie on May 10, 1912, he was the son of Adam and Augusta Stickler Kopser. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna Crispell Gibson Kopser, four sons and four daughters in law, Fred and Carole of Bent Mountain, Va, Ray and Jacque of Union, George and Kathleen of Jessamine County, Ky, and Larry and Rosemary of Lexington; 17 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, and two brothers, Joseph and George. Visitation will be on Monday, June 24, from 6 8 pm at Milward's Funeral Home, Southland Drive, Lexington, Ky. Additional visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 25, from 10 11 am at Christ the King Cathedral in Lexington, Ky.

21, 1943 in Tarboro, N.C., he" was the son of the late Lin wood Parker and Bertha Lee Canady of Rocky Mount, N.C. A forty year resident of the Mid Hudson area, he was a laborer for Queens Car Wash. He was a fbrmen employee of Lincoln Juices of Highland and the Catharine Street Community Center. Shorty was a member of the Beulah Baptist Church. His love will be cherished and remembered by his wife, Shcra Van Pelt Parker, at home; his mother, Bertha Lee Canady of Rocky Mount, N.C; his son, Michael Tillery of High Point, N.C, and daughters, Harriet Bumette of Fayettevwe, N.C, Jean nette Parker and Lisa Parker, both of Poughkeepsie, and Letia Parker of Highland.

Other survivors include brothers, Linwood Canady and his wife, Ella, James H. Canady, Larrie Canady and his wife, Quay, Anthony Canady, Calvin Canady and his wife, Felicia, all of Rocky Mount, N.C; sisters, Mary Johnson of Hampton, Va, Ruby Watson and her husband, Milton, also of Hampton, Va, Jeanida Canady and Jeannie Canady, Vivian Thompson and her husband, Cornell, all of Rocky Mount, N.C, Theresa Chapman and her Melvin of Nashville, N.C; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; other relatives, and friends. 'Dot' Dearnaley BEACON Dorothy "Dot" Dearnaley, 89, a longtime Beacon resident, entered into rest on Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. Daughter of the late Edward and Clara Meloling Masten, she was born Sept 18, 1912 in Newburgh.

On. Nov. 11, 1931, she married Walter E. "Ed" Dearnaley. Mr.

Dearnaley preceded her in death by one week on June 15, 2002. Mrs. Dearnaley devoted her life to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Beacon and was a member of Dorcas Guild, serving in several capacities. She is survived by her two daughters, Edwina J.

Meyer, and her husband, William H. of SL Augustine, FL, and Carol L. Jackson and her husband, Philip L. of Beacon; five grandchildren, Kelly LaMar of Virginia, Britt Meyer and Tory Meyer, both of Maryland, Peter Angelo and Damon Angelo and his wife, Lynn, all of Beacon; seven great grandchildren, Natalie Dennis, Ian and Gwen LaMar, all of Virginia, Breanna and Kendal Meyer of Maryland, and Kajla and Devyn Angelo of Beacon; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Harold in infancy and Leonard.

A Memorial Service will be held 12 noon on Tuesday, June 25, at First Presbyterian Church, Liberty Street, Beacon, with Rev. James H. Edgar officiating. Beverly Axelrod, an activist and lawyer whose list of clients included members of the Black Panthers, American Indian activists and radicals of the 1960s and 70s, died of emphysema Wednesday. She was 78. She worked with Leonard Garment on the Law Review at Brooklyn Law School and credited Garment, who became Pres. Richard Nixon's personal counsel, with introducing her to jazz and leftist politics. In 1952, Axelrod became president of the Modesto National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and as an attorney' for the Congress of Racial Equality, she participated in voter registration drives in the South.

Axelrod represented Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver, author of "Soul on Ice." She also represented Jerry Rubin, co founder of the Youth International Party, a radical street theater group, when he was called before the House Un American Activities committee in 1966. Axelrod moved to New Mexico in 1968 and there she worked as a defense attorney for a Chicano land rights movement. In 1973, she was one of the lawyers representing American Indians at the Pine Ridge Reservation and served as principal negotiator between the Wounded Knee Defense Committee and the federal government. Trask, an attorney and patriarch of a politically active family, died June 3 on Kauai. He was 91. Trask was the sop of David. Trask, an early member of the Democratic Party of Hawaii. Trask was active in the Democratic Party and was the last surviving member of the Statehood Commission, on which he served Robert Miller, 57, a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, died Saturday, June 22, 2002 at The Thompson House in Rhinebeck, Mr.

Miller was a plumber with the Plumbers Steamfittcrs Local 201, HydePark. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, and also enjoyed bowling and golfing. He belonged to SL Peter's Church in Hyde Park. Born in Poughkeepsie on Feb. 21, 1945, he was the son of the late Louis Miller, Sr.

and the late Elizabeth Ring wood Miller, He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Marie Osban and husband, Richard of Red Hook and Beth Scilabro and husband, Tony of Newport News, Va; a son, Robert Miller, Jr. and wife, Lisa of Newport News, Va; two brothers, Louis Miller and wife, Irene of Poughkeepsie and James Miller and wife, Judith of Poughkeepsie; two sisters, Millie Cruger and husband, Dutch of Hyde Park and Bitsy StODsM and husband, Vic of Poughkeepsie; six grandchildren, Alicia and Jacob Osban, Tristan and Hunter Miller, and Alexandra and Andrew Scilabro, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Bantel, 79, a resident of the the Town of Lloyd since 1948, and previously of Queens, N.Y, died at home on Saturday, June 22, 2002. Mr. Bantel was employed by IBM Poughkeepsie for over 36 years until his retirement in 1984 as a senior associate engineer. He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club, and was past member and range officer of the B3M Pistol Club. He.

completed the IBM Customer Engineering Field Instructor class 1721 on large scale computers in 1953. He was also employed by Arma Engineering Corporation on their new radar designs. Mr Bantel was a Town of Lloyd police officer since 1960 and was appointed chief police administrator from February 1968 through January 1975. Mr. Bantel also studied photography under the direction of Mr.

Chislsin Looton of New York City in 1945. He was a past member of the Photographic Society of America, and was employed to do photography work by a company in the Newsweek building at 42nd street and Broadway in New York City. Originally a member of the Wakefield Lodge 1110 of Queens County, he then transferred to Highland Adonai Lodge 718 He was a member of the Masonic Order for over 50 years. He was also a member of the New Paltz United Methodist Church and was an active member of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Chapter 975 of Ulster County. Born in New York City on June 29, 1922, he was the only son of George and Florence Beilby Bantel.

His wife, Gladys VanVliet Bantel, survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters in law, Richard and Kathy Bantel of West Allenhurst, J. and Alan and Donna Bantel of Red Hook; a granddaughter, Caitlin Bantel of West Allenhurst, a grandson, Branden Bantel of Red Hook, and two cousins. Martial arts film director dies at 79 HONG KONG Veteran martial arts filmmaker Chang Cheh, mentor to kung fu film superstar Bruce Lee and action director John Woo, died Saturday. He was 79. He received a lifetime achievement award at this year's Hong Kong Film Awards. The Associated Press Eugene Eliza Harris, 76, passed away on Thursday.

She, received her education in the Friars Point school system, A homemaker, she migrated to New York State in 1971 and settled in Poughkeepsie. She was a member of the Smith Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Patricia Sears Girardi, 80, of Katonah, N.Y, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2002 after an extended illness. Pat was bom in Chicago, Dl to Gradwell and Ebba Sears. She graduated from Pine Manor Junior College and Smith College.

She married William J. Girardi of New Rochelle, N.Y on July 13, 1946. They resided in Larchmont N.Y. for 25 years. She is the mother of Grad, John, Nancy and Jay.

She was a member of the PTA, the Penny Wives Club, The Great Books Club and was instrumental in the founding of the Larchmont Yacht Club Ladies Sailing Association. Pat and her family moved to Katonah, N.Y. in 1969. She worked as a real estate agent and belonged to the New York Chapter of the Herb Society and volunteered at the Kitchawan Research Laboratory. Pat will be remembered lovingly for her quick smile, her great sense of humor and her willingness to donate her time Most of all, to those who knew her well, she will be remembered for her kindness, patience and loyalty to her Mends.

In addition to her husband, Bill and her four children, Pat is survived by her brother, Dick Sears of Jupiter, Fla; her four grandchildren; Mark, Megan, Bill and Jenn, and her great granddaughter, Madeline.
