terrible disaster occurred near Corfu, on the New Yoi Central road. Eight men were killed outright and four badly hurt. They were Poles, with the exception of Joseph Warner, their foreman, who among the killed. The men were engaged in shoveling snow. All were frightfully mutilated.

The men stepped from one f-ack to avoid an approaching train, right in front of a fast ex- press train running in the same direction as the first, and were literally ground to pieces. Warner and a gang were working on track No. 3 near Winspeare bridsr 0 A freight train was laboring its way ponderously up the steep incline. Its motion was so slow that the men continued their work until the train was almost upon them. Then they jumped out of the way.

Some jumped to the right, others to the left. Those who Jumped to the north escaped. Most of those who jumped to the south were struck by the express train coming down track No. 2 with fearful velocity. There is a straight piece of track here and the engineer had a clear vK down the stretch.

No snow was falling. As soon as he realized the appalling situation he brought the train up with a jerk that threw the pasen gers out of their seats. It was too late, however, to avoid the calamity Twelve nmngled bodies were picked up, in but six of which life was four The bodies were scattered over a large area. Some had been thrown a distance of 60 feet. Others were throv-i against tho freight train and thi.r bodies horribly cut and dismembered.

Engineer Smith of the express could see nothing ahead of me, but I thought the place looked bad and blew my whistle. I had let up on the whistle when I heard the fireman give a yell. He did not call for brakes, I slapped on the air the minute I heard him. He had seen a man beside the track, though he had not seen any one struck. "A moment afterl applied the brakes I saw a man shoot up into the air on my side of the cab.

He was as high as the smokestack when I saw n. He came down on the freight train which was running along on si and was carried a mile before he fell off. "My train stopped in about two lengths, and the sight that I saw when I got out WHS the most horrible I have ever witnessed. The dead and mangled -were 'ying on both sides of the track just as they had been thrown. I did not see them until after we had struck them.

I did not see them come on the track, and until my fireman yelled I did not know they were there."
