Will the Small Appropriation Be to the Public Library. The Show How Xoces- twry Now Quarters are Tor Thin Institution. Tho sjppcinl message of Mayor Oakley to tho council Tuosrtay night, asking that an appiopriaiion bo made from the gcueiiil lund of $500 for the purpose of providing quarters for tho public library, was pleasurable suipiUo to those interested in library which means inani thousands of our Tho method approved by the mayor solves a difficulty, seemingly iimmuounublo, iu providing for the immense number of patrons now uiakiusr use of the library. The fact that over one thousand men and women iu all walks of life aro daily making use of the library to their own good and that of tho iatelleutual pi ogress of the city, should be enough to Insure tho council's approval of any measure lending to benelit the institution. The need of new books is easily seen when it is noticed that thcro aro but three books in the library for eyerj user and some of these arc volumes used only in the investigation of certain subjects as containing statistical reports.

At the rate books nre issued now and new borrowers coming in, tbo library is vastly Inferior to the needs of the public. The librarian informed a UAZETTK representative yesterday that almost every day sho was offered donations of books from citizens, all of which sho was obliged to ask to be deferred until new quarters could be obtained with more room. Tho tax levy for library purposes is not at its full limit and the money derived from this source will be almost exhausted in tho payment of salaries, and incidental expenses, and should uo relief.come, leaving little or nothing for the purchase of the books so much needed. During tho twenty-four hours elapsed since tho mayor sent the message to the council, many offers havo been mado of rooms suitable for library purposes, so that ttith the money uo difficulty will be met obtaining a good placo for the library at an economical cost. Some day, of course, it is hoped a library building will ornament the city of Fort Wajne, and when the tbrary once moves from tho city ball is desirable that it should go whore it will not have to be moved again i such a building as described shall he ready for occupancy.

Tbc public library is n.o louget' nn experiment; is a splendid fact. J'ho hundreds of people daily crowd- ng into the narrow space about tho counters of the library should appeal the council in uo uncertain way as tho ueedi of tho public library. A small appropriation now will be of more value than many thousands jears from now, and the couu- that aids tho infant library will lavo a lasting mouumont to its memory. ItHEA. At the Teroplo next Monday evening, Khea, to our theater goers, be seen in "The New Magdalen," by Wilkie Collins. Rhea is by birth Bulglan, 07 education a French woman, and by aftiutty an American. Her career affords a happy illustration of the proverb that "art knows no country." Her dramatic studies were conducted under the direction of licauueliet and Got, two of tho most celebrated societaries of the Comedie Francaise, and her earliest artistic successes were made in I'aris. But greater triumphs were subsequently achieved in St.

Petersburg, where she held the position of leading lady ot the famous French comedy company organization under imperial auspices. The assassination of the czar, Alexander caused the disbandment for a time of the Coniedie Francaise, of St. Petersburg, and Khea then determined to try her fortune in England. In London she studied Shakespearian roles with John Ryder, the tutor of Adelaide Neilson and a former colleague of Macready, and made a successful debut as Beatrice, In "Much Ado About Nothing." This appearance led her to her first tour In 1881-82, and since that the American public have enjoyed tho monopoly of Mmc. Khca's service.

SHORT MEASURE. A Wheat Swindler Captnrtd Detective Stoll. Farmers -at a Columbia City Oralu Elevator How 'Twas Done. The farmers of Whitley county have beeji, for eorno timo past, very Icious of a cerUta grain elevator located at Columbia City and after having employed Detective Stoll, of this city, who Una worked on the ease for the past two weeks, their suspicions have boon confirmed. The grain elevator ID question located on the Eel division of tho Wnbash railroad, at Columbia City, and is operated by a man named J.

U. Barnes. It has been noticed that day after day, farmer? bavo had reason to complain that their wheat as weighed at tho elevator did not come up to their expectations. For this reason they employed Detective Stoll to investigate the matter. Mr.

Stoll brought three separate wagon loads of grain in this city and drove to Columbia City in farmer guise to sell the produce to the tirm supposed to bo crooked. The buyer was J. B. Kayler, and it was to h'ini that tbc produce was sold. There were three loads upon which the evidence was based, one load of twenty sack; of wheat, another ot twenty-three sacks of oats and a third of thirty- three sacks of oats.

All or these loads were carefully weighed at two scales in this city and the results recorded. They were driven overland to Columbia City, two witnesses accompanying each load, and sold to Kayler. When weighed by Barnes at the elevator the first load fell short fifty-one pounds, the second load forty-eight pounds and the third load two bushels. The results of Detective Stoll's work will result In a case being brought before the grand jury of Whitley county, when they next meet. Tho farmers are greatly incensed over the affair and tho result of the investigation will causo a sensation in Columbia City.

The remedy rests with the afflicted. If consumers strictly taboo so called "cheap" baking powders, they will not be manufactured. Dr. Price's is the best, purest. THE FIKST Those who never read tho advertisements in their newspapers miss more than they prosumo.
