John Rookie a Hungarian miner and 15 negro miners were caught in the mine Later 11 bodies were recover ed and six more remain to be taken out The bodies recovered are those of Lester and 10 negroes when he heard the first report The explosion took place about one mile from the main entrance ranken field attempted to get to the aid of the entombed miners but owing to the presence of the gas he was forced to retrace his steps toward the main entrance After continually falling he finally reached an opening where the fresh air revived him The explosion was caused by an accumulation of gas catching fire from the lamp of a miner who was going to work This ia turn fired six kegs of blasting powder which had been stored in the mines The ex plosion knocked down all the brat tices for a quarter of a mile back to ward tho mine entrance thus cutting out the air from the men imprisoned behind the debris There had been a small gas expla sion in the mine on Sunday which burned two mules to death Super intendent A Stewart it is said had personally cautioned the men not to attempt to work again until the air had been tested by a safety lamp but they disregarded his cau tion and went in A party headed by Mine Inspector Cooper attempted rescue after the accident but was driven back for want of air The coal is burning and there is no hope of extinguishing the flames until a new air Adventists Sure the World is Nearing Its End Lincoln Neb Dispatch The Seventh Day Adventists again are stirring parts of the West by their prophecy that the end of the world is close at hand Their beliefs are now being spread in Kansas Ne braska and Iowa where many big meetings have been held in the past month A two campmeeting has just come to a close in this city The membership of the sect is now about 75000 principally in the West although missionary work has been pushed for a score of years else where The centres of tho propa ganda now are in this city and Bat tle Creek Mich lu 1874 Europe was invaded and a great deal of tho Scandinavian and Norwegian emigration to this region catue as a result of these missionary efforts In 1885 a church was estab lished in Australia Publications in thirty seven different languages are now circulated among them some of the dialects of the South Pacific The Adventists do not fix any def inite date for the end of tho world They base their prediction upon the prophecy of Daniel in which it was said that in 2300 days the sanctuary would bo cleaned A day means a year they say and tho 2300 years ended in 1844 the year set by Miller for the end of the world Tho mistake of the Adventist cf 1844 pertained to the nature of the event then to occur and not to tho time they say What took place then they believe was the begin ning of the Day of Judgment When that is over tho world will end The Adventists say the approach by the signs of the as pointed out in the Scriptures The move ment for universal arbitration they say is a fulfillment of the prophecy of Micah that in the last days many people shall say let the Lord judge and nations sha'l not war with each other Joel says that while thoy shall talk peace they shall prepare for war and the Adventists point to the great standing armies and the war talk of the day as confirmation In the fifth chapter ot James it is predicted that in the last days the rich will be heaping up treasures and the poor crying because thoir hire is kept back Every trust they say is a sign of the coming King and every strike the posting of a notice that the end is near Matthew says the social world will be in the last days as iu day and the innumerable crimes of the day is quoted as confirmation Tim othy tells of the sins of the religious world and the Adventist preachers dwell upon tho theatre going danc ing card playing and rich dressing of tho church members as proof of this condition The Adventists all dress plainly es chewing gold jewels and rich attire and are generally model citizens of Prllchard and Craig Senator Craig Esq of Asheville have ar ranged dates for a joint canvass of tho State previously agreed upon Craig is a candidate for the Senate and it will be recalled that Pritchard challenged him for a joint canvass which challenge was accepted The Asheville correspondent ot the Char lotte Ohserter in reporting the ar rangement says: The Senator had suggested both Salisbury and Durham as good places for their joint discussion but Mr Craig demurred to this as he feared a stop at these places would savor too much of an invasion of the country these places being conceded as the preserves of Messis Overman and Carr Tho dates agreed upon were: Kinston September22 Smithfield 23 ayetteville 24 Wilmington 25 Rocky Mount 2G Raleigh 27 Pittsboro 29 Oxford 30 Greens boro October 1 Lenoir October 2 Statesville October 8 Charlotte Oc tober 9 Hickory October 10 and Asheville the 11th The speaking in Charlotte will take place at night Later dates will be arranged for a joint discussion at Elizabeth City aud Marion and perhaps some point in the western counties Senator Pritchard said to Mr Craig: is my intention to discuss the issues of the day as I understand them and steer clear of everything of a person al nature If we go into personali ties it will not make us think more of each other and after it 13 all over we will think less of Mr Craig readily approved of this sentiment and tbeir discussions will doubtless be pitched on a high plane and im Zrx iL irukvn tM pHaUoputallfncnn (I A vhI evrvwheri Vr £TANARD h'V fl Vnrrr JI L7L4J Shepherdstown Believed to Have Suffered an Attack of Heart Trouble The Landmark has reported the death of Rev Max Lentz son of Mr Jacob Lentz of Stony Point who was drowned at Shepherdstown Tuesday 9th The following account of the tragedy from the Shepherdstown (W Va) Register of the 11th will be of interest to many of The Landmark readers: One of the ujpkt distressing occur rences that happened in Shop herdstown in many years was the drowning Tuesday afternoon of Rev Max Lentz pastor of the Luther an churches of Shepherdstown and Uvilia Mr Lentz had gone to Po tomac river with his elder daughter Ruth and his kon Hualpha his niece Miss Bessi' air and Louise Anna Snyder the daughter of the editor of the Register Mrs Lentz also accompanied the party but re mained at the toll house on this side of the river with the family of Mr Keesecker while the others in the party crossed to the Maryland side of the river Mr Lsutz and the young folks went to tho eamlbar about mtd' way between the two bridges and were soon iu the river They had been in the watr for sotno time when Mr Lentz proposed to give Louise Anna some lessons in swim ming She placed hor hands on his shoulders and they were swimming in water about five or six feet deep when Mr Lentz' without an exo'a mation or a struggle suddenly sank Louise Anua also wont under but quickly reappeared The others of the party who were on shore some twenty feet distant from them saw there was trouble and Ky Young a boy about fifteen years of age plunged in the water to help He succeeded in getting hold of Louise Anna and held her up until Miss air reached them with a boat into which she dragged the exhausted child Mr Lentz never came to the sur face after he first went down It is believed that his heart must have be come suddenly affected and caused his instant death as there was no sign that he had been attacked with cramp It was about half past four i when the accident occurred An alarm was at once given and the people hurried toahe river where efforts were immediately set on foot to recover the bey Men with boats were quickly on tre spot aud about five the remains were recov ered by James Wintermoyer Roland era The boay Was lound where it had gone down as there was little or uo current at that place It was brought to the Virgina shore and from there taken to Mr undertaking rooms where it was pre pared for burial About ten it was taken to the Lutheran parson age Efforts were made when the body was first 'taken from the water to resuscitate it but the spark of life bad fled never to return The terrible accident cast a gloom over the community The people could scarcely believe that the strong vigorous man who had been on the streets in full health and en joyment of life only a couple of hours previous was now cold in death The sad occurrence was not only a great shock and cause of groat distress to his parishioners but the people generally felt the blow The news quickly spread and mauy members of his church from the country around at once drove to town to offer condo lence hoping against hope that the sad story was not true One of the painful features of the affair was the great distress of Mr family Three of his chil dren were with him at the time and powerless to help him saw him sink to death beneath the water His wife also was a witness to the trag edy from the opposite side of tho river Tho bereaved ones were quickly attended by sympathizing friends and taken to their home where all that loving thoughtfulness could suggest was done for them They bore up under the affliction as well as their grisf stricken hearts would permit Hualpha Maximus Lentz was born April 20 1851 near Statesville He was prepared for college at Catawba High School He entered
