tf UMBRELIiA IIKPAIKIXG. and recovering done by an expert, Frank Kellyk 107 south Meridian iTo PROF. BYRON LAWRENCE. Editor Times: Louis Ludlow in his letter in the Indianapolis Star of today on the discovery and development of coal, clay and shale, in Brazil and vicinity, pays merited tribute to Professor Byron Lawrence as the discoverer of these valuable minerals. But he has been misinformed as to the place of his demise.

He says he went to Philadelphia, expecting to return soon, but the "grim reaper gathered him in soon after he reached the Quaker city." The same error occurs in the history of Clay county, on page 424-, and this may have led Ludlow to make his statement. The truth is Prof. Lawrence died here in Brazil, and was buried in the old Hill cemetery, on the west side, and a neat headstone marks the place of his sepulture. My impression is that a brother, or some near relative came here from the east to look after his affairs, and had the stone placed at the head of his grave. I did not live in Brazil at the time of Lawrence's sojourn here, but I have seen him; and recollected that he was regarded by some of the citizens as somewhat visionary and eccentric.

H1SSeV SMS AMERICAN SEAMAN dflE BEST RAYMOND PAYNE RETURNS FROM TOUR OF, OCEANS AND PRAISES AMERICANS THEIR INTELLIGENCE WINS Raymond Says the Seamen of The Navies of Other Countries do Not Cone tip to The American Standard for Efficiency.

Raymond Payne, son of Payne, student at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, returned yesterday to this city for a visit of a month with home folks. Raymond will have a furoluph of thirty days before returning to the academy for the next school year. He has just completed a tour of the Atlantic ocean touching many countries of the European and African shores on the training ship Mass. Raymond says that the tour gave him an opportunity to visit the battleships of navies of other countries and was given excellent opportunities to compare the American seamen with those of other countires. Raymond is loud in praise of American shipmn, both the output of the naval academy and the plain.

"Jackies" who enlist from the islands. He says the United States pays more, allows the men more privileges, clothes the men better, feeds better and more and get more good work out of the men than foreign navies. He says in cleanliness the American ships surpass those of other countries and the general run of seamen show a higher standard of intelligence. Raymond says that the thing that impressed him most on the trip is the great defense of the English ports He says that some of the harbors of the Island have more torpedo boats and coast defense ships than the entire American navy and any country in war with England would have a hard time ever harming the Island ports.
