Whacs the matter with the fish and game department? Why don't they get on the ball?" At various times this writer has heard sportsmen express opinions that Kamloops should be planted in Bear lake Fish lake Utah lake Deer creek reservoir and Strawberry reservoir to mention a few Similar requests probably have been made in all the other western states It is to the persons making these requests that the Idaho information is directed No Kamloops James Simpson Idaho fish culturist and Forrest Hauck fish biologist made some extensive tests in Stanley lake in the Saw-tooth mountains of south central Idaho in June They were looking for one Kamloops rainbow They found none Simpson revealed that several thousand healthy young Kamloops 6 to 12 inches long were released in Stanley lake three years ago Another plant was made the following year The lake has been closed to all fishing since the experiment began Gill-net operations in various parts of i the lake caught Dolly Varden trout squawlish and suckers but there were no rainbow let alone giants of the kind that set the 37-pound world record at Pend Oreille lake 1 CA IP 44144L4M 'Well Sis9 Let's Be Hooking on to Something' I 9 tn wayne Welton 3 left patiently Waits for his sister Louailna 3 I be can chuck it in the creel Some of those henry's like trout are to haul in one of those big trout from Henry's lake in Idaho so I almost as big as these mighty anglers who tip beam at 44 lbs each PO age 1601 Ot EJ to Vlin ct Storms Keep East Idaho However Madsen issued a word of caution to anglers planning trips lido the Uinta area He pointed out that late storms have been lashing the region and that more may come A peak In the Uintas is something entirely diffekent than Main street in Salt Lake City even in July! 'Watch the weather very closely" Madsen advised "Numerous storms have handicapped planting operations in the Uintas all through June" In fact It got so bad for seven's' days that the department's pack horses carrying trout into the high lakes had to be brought out and operations temporarily suspended The rain wasn't so bad but when it started to snow that licked the patient old oat-burners Good News Good news for Uinta fishermen was contained in Madsen's report with his announcement that pack train planting would continue throughout' the summer Included in the forthcoming plants will be some big loads of native trout obtained from Yellowstone park Incidentally this is one of the nicest deals ever put over by the state game department Each year the state- sends a couple ofmen north to the park to help federal fisheries men with spawning operations In return for the labor this year Utah will get four million trout eggs 4 Good Invetment By UNITED PRESS For the most part Montana fishermen will run Into they same old trouble this week--too much water Although streams are nbw beginning to hold to their banks the statewide rains of the week have kept' them generally high and muddy However with the advancing season and a promise of less rain 1 this week end the smaller streams will be greatly improved The western Montana area will show the greatest improvement as it begins to recover from its early season floods Flies are getting better In all sections but bait with spinners will continue to be the most popular this week Here's how the Treasure state fishing prospects shape up: elevation streams and lakes in Red Lodge area mostly clear and fishing improved Yellowstone still high and poor: some tributary streams starting to produce Madison Beaverhead and Red Rock good: Big Hole fair Jefferson poor Lake Delmo good: waters generally high after heavy rains streams still best beta most water high and 'murky Nevada creek still popular streams in central Montana clearing but majority of those who will be out with rods and reels Intermittent rainstorms have been in progress for five days and there appeared to be no surcease in sight I 1: Anglers Draw Lill lit Warning CHEYENNE Wyo June 26 1211 can't beat the creel limit by having a Wyoming and Colorado fishing license That was the warning given Saturday by State Fish Warden A Greene to fishermen along the southern border of the state The same applies to any state bordering Wyoming including Utah and Idaho Warden Greene said some fishermen Were buying Colorado and Wyoming licenses on the theory they could in Wyoming or Colorado have more than the state's limit in possession Wyoming's creel limit is 20 fish or 10 lbs and one game fish "It makes no difference" Greene said "whether the fish were caught In Wyoming or another state" heard again concerning Mackay reservoir which several fishermen insist is about fished out Several years ago the Mackay fish avert aged between four and five pounds but the size has declined each season until trolling now is producing small trout of 10 to 13 inches and one pound or less in -011 A "slicker" reports making good use of the large trout fly now out in large num bers on upper stretches of the north fork of -Snake river Using -silk thread he tied a No 8 Kook to the trout fly which he turns loose on the stream and woe to the trout that comes up for the juicy dessert Flies Producing A transition appears to be under way since the opening June 4 when salmon egg fishermen ruled the waters and fly fishermen got little more than camp fish Wet flies and dry flies now are taking good catches as fish quit the hot The entire cost to the state Is about $600 in salaries Trout eggs sell on the current market for about $2 a thousand So the state gets approximately $8000 worth of eggs for $600 Not a bad investment 3 Madsen also reported that fishing in the Ilintah basin country is rapidly picking up after several weeks of high and roily -waters Increasing numbers of anglers are expected to hit the basin country from now on- I WON THE LAST 'TWO RACES AND IN 1948 SET A NEW TRACK RECORD OF 119813 MILES PER HOUR (Maur' lose) Raise Legal Size LOS ANGELES June 26 'The state fish and game commission Friday raised the minimum size for legal catches -of sardines UhEtk Obtahis Park Ekg-s Streams Roily Streams are roily 'naturally but they did not jump in volume as much as the average sportsman would have suspected Reason: the rains brought lower temperatures causing a letdown in the rate of melting of the remaining snow on the watersheds And just because it is late June don't think that snow doesn't remain In places There is still more than a foot of the winter stuff on Lewis lake divide for example That is near the headwaters of the south fork of -the Snake river But the thing that discouraged some of eastern Idaho's river fishtrmen was the fact that the rains put a stop to irrigating of crops Result: flow of canals was cut off or reduced at headgates causing sweeping flows where under normal conditions fine I holes loaded with big trout exist Flock to Lakes Thus lakes and include American Palls Island Park and Mackay and Hebgen lake in take the full brunt of the fishermen's assault this week end That in turn means the highways will be I teeming with boats aboard trailers 1 County Baseball NORTHERN DIVISION vvvAsii 1 Fishermen again are demanding the reservoir be closed to protect the few fish remaining and to preserve the spawners so there will be a natural addition to the waters A hatchery in the area is reported failing to meet the increasing demand for more and more trout Change' In Depth leaver waters are beginning to change in depth with south fork of Snake river much lower and now milky instead of yellow Another week or two minus storms may bring about a distinct change in fishing conditions there providing runoff from Jackson lake is held in check' North fork is Improving but above American Falls lake the stream still is not to the liking of June fishermen who are awaiting irrigation to draw off larger amounts Rains eliminate irrigation need in part and thus delay the day when the stream will be in right proportion 1 Snow on Galena pass between Stanley and Ketchum will affect streams in that area for some days but Wood river has been dropping Carey reservoir is reported fair and Fish creek reservoir scheduled to open July 1 Is expected to be in top condition with water lower and fish Concentrated a condition good for the seeker of heavy bags but anything but good for future a shipment of 1339- 000 Montana grayling eggs from 'Yellowstone park on attaining planting size -the grayling will be stocked in lakes at the headwaters of the Provo and Weber river drainages Madsen superintendent of state fisheries revealed Former grayling plants in these lakes have done very well but this very fact brings up an interesting point "A lot of people who have caught grayling in these waters throw the fish away because they are not acquainted' with it" Madsen said "The Montana grayling is an exceptionally fine eating fish a battler and strikes viciously on a fly" -Madsen said the-I fish' could be Identified by an extremely large dorsal fin which is blue and orange In color The fish's mouth is similar to that of the trouts except that it is smaller 7- "Wyoming Fishes" states that the grayling Is ordinarily about one foot in length but may reach a weight of four pounds Although quite successful as a lake fish the grayling prefers clear cold streams and is found in pools quite successful as a lake fish the grayling prefers clear cold streams and is found in pools I Big Mystery What became of the fish?
