Baltimore Sun In which It points out that under the home rule provision contained In the local option provision of the ABC law both sides on the Issue should be content The editorial says: Danville Va has Just come through a campaign on the liquor issue that was a reminder of the contests car ried on prior to the adoption of the Eighteenth Amendment under local option laws The wets won by a de cisive majority ollowing repeal the Virginia Leg islature enacted a liquor control law that provided for sale of liquors by state store Any locality however was given the option of voting Itself out of the system and remaining dry This was the Issue before the elec torate of Danville which gave a ma jority of 596 In favor of the state system The extent of the turn over was Indicated by the fact that the city voted against repeal last August by a majority of 72 One of the compelling motives for this reversal of opinion appears to be the operation of bootleggers and the reported satisfaction with the work ings of the dispensary system The claim Is made that It has been bene ficial In checking Illicit sales and has not been followed by an observa ble Increase In drinking The local option law gives the right of home rule and with the possession of that privilege both sides should be con tent The Suffolk News Herald holds the verdict rendered the interest of the community" and has this to say: The significance of the Danville local option election Tuesday lies in the large number of votes cast and the decisive majority for establish ment of a dispensary there Also when It Is recalled that the town voted against repeal by a small ma jority and paradoxically at the same time voted In favor of the plan now adopted the approval of the voters gives added Interest to the result The people did not vote for a liquor store because of revenue as It will get none directly from the traffic and so the verdict must have been rendered In the Interest of the com munity The new system of beverage liquor control is now only In its fourth month and not all of the state has been provided with stores The board has made excellent progress moving slowly and cautiously as it should because It Is desirable to avoid mis takes But it Is too early to make comparisons with previous years un der prohibition 3 to the number of arrests for drunkenness or the nurn ber of arrests of bootleggers and oth er violators of the state liquor laws Although therii may have been more automobile accidents occasioned by drunken drivers that does not necessarily signify that druhlteue is on the Increase It must also be bome In mind that moonshining and bootlegging are still going on as usual and so It is difficult to trace the source of the supply The high price of good legal liquor Is keeping the illicit distiller in business Prob ably the federal and state govern ments will find that it win save mon ey and promote law observance they reduce the tax Temperance after all is an individ ual matter in our cplnlon there is thing wrong with the Virginia con trol system and that it will meet ex pectation if not abused If given half a show it will bring the traffic back under control where it certainly has not been for years There will be no trouble keeping the traffic in leash if the Individual will so kep hmslf Self control of and not self indulgence In strong drink Is the key 10 elution of the liquor problem Harsh laws wl not promote tem perance but on the other hand Invite awlessness Virginia is bent on giv ing the dispensary system a square a deal and a fair chance as the Dan vine vote signifies City Razed By Quake In Panama Third Largest Town in Coun try Heavily Hit Must be Practically Rebuilt PANAMA July The virtu al destruction of David City third
