"DEAD MAN'S OUTFIT" 4 IN RAILWAY WAGE CASE Motormen Ask for Same Wages as Steam Engineers Claim Hazard Greater. Chicago, Feb. 8. "A dead man's outfit" la the name given by motor-men to the control on electric locomotives which automatically shuts off the current and applies the brakes If the motorman takes his hands from the controller while on duty.

The apparatus was described here today before the board of arbitration In tbe western railways wage case by R. E. Hewitt, master mechanic of the electrified line of the Southern Pacific. The engineers and firemen demand among other things that motor-men be paid the same as locomotive engineers, the rate of pay be based upon the rate of tractive effort of the cars. In presenting their side of the case, the engineers that the hazard on electrio locomotives wa greater than that on steam engines.

Hewitt testified that tbe hazard was slight and that the size or the electrio engine does not Increase the work of tbe motorman. Whether the power be small or great the motorman' work Is the same. He simply moves the control leaf Mr. Hewitt said. "Hef keeps his hand on tbe controller to keep the contact," said the witness.

It Is what we call a 'dead man's If he faints or drops dead and bis hand leaves the controller, it springs up and the current is Interrupted. The brakes are set too." OH, CONSISTENCY!
