Padralg Harrington, Ireland; Mark Calcavecchia, Phoenix; Chris strength, I haven't had any prob lems at all In fact Thornton and some of the other defensive tackles have At full strength again after shoulder surgery By JEFF LEGWOLD Staff Writer After all he has been through the past two seasons, Titans defensive tackle John Thornton can honestly say he's happy just to be sore these days. Sore arms. Sore legs. Normal, training camp sore.

It has kept him from thinking about his right shoulder, something that was on his mind much of the past 21 months. "I haven't even thought about the shoulder at all," Thornton said. "My body has been sore a little bit, but I haven't even worried about the shoulder. And thaf a great feeling." Thornton's shoulder became a concern Oct. 30, 2000, on a play that went into the books as a rather mundane 3-yard gain by Redskins running back Stephen Davis.

"I remember it vividly," Thornton said. "The offensive lineman was holding me, so I reached out with my right arm. But Stephen Davis ran right through it I felt it bend and stretch it was 250 pounds just blasting right through an arm tackle. I knew it wasn't going to be right after that" And it wasn't Thornton tried to play through the injury, wearing a harness for the remainder of the 2000 season as well as through training camp in 200L He played in the first three regu- taken some additional repetitions in practice because of injuries to rookie Albert Haynesworth (ankle) and Henry Ford (ankle). lar-season games last year but was frustrated and fighting through the pain.

Thornton then was deactivated for four games as the team's medical staff tried to determine if the shoulder would heal with rest It didn't Thornton underwent season-ending surgery. He was placed on injured reserve Nov. 8, having recorded no tackles and one batted-down pass. For the first time in any part of his playing career, Thornton became a spectator, forced to watch as the Titans struggled to a 7-9 record. "I think John, if healthy, could have made a difference for us as the season wore on," Coach Jeff Fisher said.

"He played at end and tackle. That flexibility was good for us, and he did the things we needed him to do at both spots." When the Titans scouted his senior season at West Virginia in 1998, they discovered Thornton was double-teamed more than any other defensive tackle on their draft board, but he still finished with four sacks and seven tackles for loss. So Thornton was used to doing the tough work inside.
