Meet Greg Trostle, a man who creates furniture with recycled wood from trash piles and nature. "It started when I was a kid," Trostle said. "I was a preteen out there building forts and swiping from scrap piles from housing sites." Trostle now builds bookcases and coffee tables from wood scraps he finds discarded behind Nashville businesses.

He then adds small branches, vines and other natural elements to the pieces, bringing the outdoors in and giving the furniture a natural feel. Creating recycled furniture art is something Trostle does for a living, but also for the earth. "First, I can't afford to buy real materials, and to me it has a special karma, if you will. We have to do something with all this waste we have." Trostle has always been an artist, in one way or another. "Before I graduated from college, I started playing pedal steel guitar and got interested in country music," Trostle said.

He spent the next 25 years of his life playing the instrument on the road for well-known country artists like Martina McBride and Mike Henderson and the Blue-bloods. But traveling wasn't easy, and when his wife got a job with the state, they moved to Nashville. When the couple arrived, they weren't in a position to buy new furniture, so Trostle made some bookcases and a coffee table out of whatever he could find. "And then my friends started asking me to make them coffee tables," Trostle said. Trostle's wife, Wendy Smith, began to see her husband's work as a talent, and she encouraged him to make a go of it full time.

"He's always been good with his hands," Smith said. "It's fun and you never know what's going to come out of the basement" Trostle was not convinced, but Smith didn't give up. To Trostle's surprise, he was invited to sell his wares earlier this month at the 31st annual Tennessee Crafts Fair at Centennial Park, which included work from 175 selected craft artists from across the state. Trostle sold some pieces and learned a thing or two from the experience.

"I learned to make smaller things, because it's hard to carry a bookcase in a crowd," he said. Trostle makes bookcases, tables, benches, arbors, trellises, birdhouses and children's playhouses.
