wwwtwvwssearuxxn THE TENNESSEAN Sunday, Jury 14, 2002 7C SPORTS: BASEBALL Owners, players need baflpaik figures Sounds Redbirds Comments from Selig, Glavine show opposite views of labor situation A 3 STRIKES and poses very serious problems. Glavine: It had an effect last time, and everybody knows that if it happens again, it's going to have another traumatic effect. Anywhere from the fan that swears he'll never come to another baseball game to the fan that says, "I don't care. As soon as they start playing again, I'll be But whatever the effect was last time, we can be sure it would be at least equal to that, if not worse. Competitive balance Selig: I think weVe made our case.

In fact, there are no questions. I think people understand there is a competitive-balance problem. And certainly from the owners' side, there is no doubt in any of their minds. Tm not going to be critical of the Yankees because they can rightfully say they are playing by the rules that exist, and they are. But when people say, "Well, there's not a problem, this and if not possible if you follow the game closely.

Glavine: The whole competitive-balance issue, we can argue about that until the sun comes up tomorrow. From my standpoint, I don't buy into a lot of the arguments, a lot of the comparisons they try and draw between other sports. By KEN DALEY Knight Ridder News Service DALLAS Thoui a strike date has not been set, the clock is ticking loudly as baseball players and owners seek to make a labor peace both sides can live with before if too late. Separate conversations during All-Star week with commissioner Bud Selig and Atlanta Braves pitcher and players union representative Tom Glavine provided a glimpse at how the two sides are perceiving their dangerous standoff. Avoiding a strike Selig: Fm happy that they didn't set a strike date.

As I have often said, this has to be settled at the table. The only way we're going to solve the problems that exist is at the table. Glavine: I have no reason to give you as to why I'm optimistic about it, I just am. think we're at least talking about the same issues this time, which has never been the case before. I think the effects of what went on the last time (the 232-day strike of 1994-95), all those things are fresh In everybody's mind And, ultimately, everybody is going to make a push to get something done.

Like I say, I have nothing to back that up with, other than if my gut feeling. Effect of work stoppage Selig: Tm an optimist by nature, so lef see what happens in the next three or four weeks. There will be time to confront all of that Nobody understands the heartache of a work stoppage more than I do. It is a nightmare. But I'm on the horns of a very difficult dilemma.

A work stoppage is everything people say it is, and the status quo is also very, very serious Baseball fans such as Tom Boese of Milwaukee, holding a sign outside the All-Star Game Tuesday, are showing their frustration with the sport and could be lost if there is another strike. The mere notion that we've bought into revenue sharing and moving that money around, that is a concessioa It may not be what the owners are looking for right now, but from our standpoint it's definitely a concession from our side. We know, ultimately, that if you move that money around, that's less money that teams are going to have to spend for players, which is what we've always fought. Proposal to tax high payrolls Selig had no specific comment on this ownership proposaL Glavine: A "competitive-balance I and make sure we do it right If it's something both sides feel we can sit down and get an agreement on, and it's best for baseball, then you go with it Revenue sharing Selig: I don't want to segregate any issue. Everybody on both sides knows what my feelings are and we know what theirs are.

I'm going to be very sensitive now about discussing any of this because nobody is more hopeful than I am that we can get something done, and done expeditiously. Glavine: Talk to hunting dtJIDE OUIHTTEIS WEE mm Clemens to miss at least two starts with groin injury think, sounds nice to the public It makes it sound like everybody's going to have a chance to win. If a luxury tax. It's a salary cap. You can call it whatever you want but it's all designed to do the same thing keep owners from spending money on players.

Montrealcontraction Selig: Contraction is a very, very viable part of our plan. (The Expos) are trying to be competitive. They believe that they can win. (But) we took the Expos for one year and I hope if one year. Glavine: We've always looked at Montreal and felt "There's a team that needs to be moved, not a team that needs to be The negotiations Selig: There's so much pressure on both sides now.

I don't think there really is anything that we need to really make us more aggressive in making a deaL But we have philosophical differences and we need to deal with those. This is a very important negotiation. I know that we need peace. I know that people are tired of hearing about all of the strife and all of the anger from both sides. Glavine: It just boils down to how much do you believe? And, from the players' standpoint we're sympathetic to the fact that there's some problems.

Thaf why the proposals we made included revenue-sharing. If hard in this process for anybody to totally trust anybody, and we're guilty of that too. But I think there's a little bit longer history of dishonesty from their side, and that's the reason we're a little bit slow to come around. But sooner or later, you have to get beyond all that and truly sit down and try to get something done. And hopefully we're going to get there.

"It's hard to say which one would dominate." Nashville resident Patti Zimmerman, a Sounds season ticket holder, said a major-league strike wouldn't impact her minor-league activities. Tm planning to go to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati in September, and I obviously wouldn't be able to do that," she said. "But it wouldn't keep me from going to future games.

Milwaukee first baseman Richie Sexson didn't play for the second straight game due to tendinitis in his left hamstring Pirates moves: Pittsburgh activated pitcher Josias Manzanillo and recalled him from his rehab assignment at Single-A Hickory. To make room for him on the roster, the Pirates optioned pitcher Bronson Arroyo back to Triple-A Nashville. Mets recal Corey.

Mets reliever Mark Corey was recalled to the majors yesterday, about two weeks after he said he smoked marijuana and collapsed from a seizure. Corey was hospitalized briefly after the seizure in the parking lot of a hotel near Shea Stadium on June 26. He was placed on the disabled list the next day and sent to Triple-A Norfolk for a rehab stint Bobby Bonds has surgery: Bobby Bonds remained in the hospital yesterday, two days after having surgery to remove a tumor from his kidney. Bonds is the father of slugger Barry Bonds and was a three-time All-Star during his 14-year major league career. He currently works in the Giants' front office.

I 1 these fields will be Visit with representatives from: Tennessee Wildlife Research Foundtion Tennessean News Services The New York Yankees have been concerned about the advancing age and health of their starting rotation all season, and they faced another reality about their fragile older pitchers yesterday when they put Roger Clemens on the 15-day disabled list with a tight right groin. Clemens will miss at least two starts and maybe several more because of the injury, which occurred Friday against the Indians. Clemens had thrown five scoreless innings, but came out after warming up to pitch the sixth. He had thrown only 79 pitches. Thanks to their trade for Jeff Weaver 10 days ago, the Yankees still have five starting pitchers.

And Clemens' injury probably squashes any plans the Yankees had to trade Orlando Hernandez. Right-hander Mike Thurman was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to take Clemens' roster spot It is Clemens' sixth stint on the DL in 19 major league seasons, and third since joining the Yankees in 1999. Clemens, 39, did not agree with the decision to go to the DL, but he had no choice. Manager Joe Torre was convinced of it Friday night and only waited to finalize the decision because Clemens lobbied so hard to have the groin reevaluated after a night's sleep. "The only problem I have with it like I told Torre, is that if not near as bad as IVe had in the past," Clemens said.

"I realize I can't afford to go out there and have something happen at the 80-pitch mark every time." Mondesi recovering: Yankees outfielder Raul Mondesi, who ran into the wall chasing Omar Vizquel's game-winning triple in the 10th inning Friday, has a ruised chest two bruised knees and whiplash. Tm sore," Mondesi yesterday told a team spokesman, who relayed his comments to the media "My whole body is sore." Injury update: Anaheim closer Troy Percival will miss at least two games while doctors examine an infection near his right ankle. Texas outfielder Rusty Greer was scratched from the starting lineup last night with a sore back. The St Louis Cardinals activated outfielder JD. Drew from the disabled list and put pitcher Woody Williams on it last night Drew, on the DL since June 28 because of tendinitis in his right knee, was not in the starting lineup.

Williams is out because of a left ribcage strain.
