Obituaries are also available online at 1 www.tennessean.com FROM PAGE 6B Pensacola, BAYERS Edward I WWII hero and father of noted Nashville drummer, Eddie Bayers died January 15, 2003 in Pensacola, FL. He would have been 93 on January 23rd. Mr. Bayers was a Naval fighter pilot and Ace in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He served upon the carriers U.S.S.

Yorktown and U.S.S. Enterprise and participated in a number of the key Naval battles of the war. He flew in the initial attacks on the Marshall Islands in February, 1942 and also escorted General Jimmy Doolittle's bombers on the first attack of Tokyo. For his role in the pivitol Battle of Midway, Lieutenant Commander Bayers was awarded the Navy Cross, second only to the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was involved in numerous battles throughout the War including the Battle of Coral Seas.

During the attack on Tokyo in 1945, he was involved in the longest Dogfight of WWII for 35 minutes. Besides, the Navy Cross, his many decorations included three Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Air Medals. Mr. Bayers also flew combat missions in the Korean War. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1958 after thirty years of service.

He lived in Nashville and Pensacola, Florida. Mr. Bayers is survived by his son, Ed Bayers Lane Brody Bayers and granddaughter, Nicole Allen Bayers. There will be a memorial service in Nashville on Tuesday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church located at 4905 Franklin Road.

Mrs. Freeman is preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Freeman, Sr. She is survived by her children, Charles Franklin Freeman, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, John T.

Freeman (Connie) and Joy Biola (John); grandchildren, Jessica Webb, Justine Biola, and Evie Grace Freeman; brothers, Oliver Hitt of Tusculoosa, AL and Mel Hitt of New Orleans, and many friends. She retired after 30 years of employment with F.W. Woolworth Company. Memorial services will be held Monday, January 20, 2003, 3:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home.

He graduated from Waverly Central High School in 1950, Valedictorian of his class, received the Balfour Citizenship Award, BS in 1954 from Austin Peay State College, MA in 1955 from George Peabody College for Teachers and 30 hours above his MA from Purdue University and George Peabody College. He had his certification in High School Mathematics, Physics, Biology, General Science and History. He was the Mu Alpha Theta Math Club Sponsor from 1958 to present. He was former Vice President of Humphreys County Teachers Assn. and Tennessee Mathematics Teachers member of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Mathematical Assn.

of America, Central Assn. of Science and Math Teachers and Math Textbook Adoption Committee. He was the WCHS Tiger Yearbook sponsor from 1987-2000 and manager of the concession stand for WCHS athletic events from 1955-2000. He was serving on the Waverly City Board of Aldermen, Chairman of Budget Committee, Chairman of City Beautification Committee, Humphreys Co. Sanitation Committee, treasurer since 1992 for Board of Directors Humphreys Co.

January 17, 2003. He was born September 8, 1917 in Lenoir City, TN. Mr. Shubert was a graduate of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. While there he met his wife, Marilee Davis.

They were married September 27, 1941. He was captain of the Carson-Newman football team, played on the baseball team and was inducted into the Carson-Newman Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. He served as President of the Men's Student Government. He also served in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and retired from Eaton Laboratories.

He and his wife were active members of the First Baptist Church of Nashville for more than 50 years. Mr. Shubert was preceded in death by his wife, Marilee and parents Henry E. and Martha Conner Shubert of Lenoir City, TN. He is survived by sons, Robert A.

(Judy) Shubert of Fort Worth, TX and William H. Shubert of Brentwood. TN: one daughter, Leta (John) Sproule of Franklin, TN; sisters, Helen (Paul) Dutton, Alyce (Harold) Proaps, Lucille Gardner-Greene, and Berniece Walker, all of Lenoir City, TN; brother, R.H. Shubert of Knoxville, TN. Grandchildren are Brandy Shubert of Bowling Green, KY.

Carl S. Smith of Adams, TN; and a sister, Mildred Ann Smith. Dr. Smith was a noted Tennessee historian, educator and author of This is Tennessee, Tennessee History: A Bibliography and coeditor of The Papers of Andrew Jackson, Vol. 1 in addition to numerous articles and book reviews.

He received his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University. He served as Tennessee State Librarian and Archivist, and Chairman of the Tennessee Historical Commission during the 1960s. From 1969 to 1972, he was associate professor of history at UT Knoxville. Dr.

Smith served as professor of history at UT Nashville and co-editor of the Andrew Jackson Papers from 1972-1979. From 1979 to 1997, he was professor of history at Tennessee State University, and had continued to serve as an adjunct professor at TSU until his death. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2003 at Belmont United Methodist Church in Nashville, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m., and following the service. The Rev.

Born in Dallas, TX he was the son of the late 0.D. Walraven, Sr. and Valeria Garrison Walraven and was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Jack and 0.D. Walraven, Jr. He was active in Masonry for 55 years, a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Comer Lodge No.

417 Members are said to be "raised" in Masonry, Walraven was literally raised by Masonry. After the death of his Mason father in 1925, he entered The Masonic Home and School in Fort Worth, TX. He grew up there, graduating as president of his class In 1932. Ferrell served with the Marine Corps during World War I1, seeing action in 5 South Pacific campaigns, including Okinawa and Guam. He was discharged in 1945 as a sergeant.

He worked for many years in food distribution, life insurance and as a real estate broker in Corpus Christi, TX. In 1979 he and his wife. Martha moved to Watertown, where she was born. Ferrell became a driving force in Watertown, working tirelessly in the Masonic Lodge, Big Brothers and the Lions Club. He received the national Melvin Jones Fellow Award "for humanitarian services" from Lions Club International.

He is survived by his wife. Martha Neal Walraven; a brother, Bill (Ricky) Walraven of Corpus Christi, TX; sisterin -law, Virginia Walraven of Dallas, TX and several nieces and nephews. Ferrell will be remembered for his sunny disposition and hearty laugh. Memorial services are planned for Sunday, February 23, 2003 at the Watertown First Baptist Church. HUNTER FUNERAL HOME.

"T.B." Telpher Ber- lin- Died January 13, 2003 in Nashville, TN. He was born in Paragould, Ark. and worked in the Civil Conservation Corps as a young adult. He married Lorene Ellen 1 Morris in Paragould, Ark. on September 13, 1940 and served in the U.S.

Coast Guard during World War on the USS Peoria in the Mediterranean, North Africa and Oran. He owned and operated T.B. Wilson Decorating Co. in Florence, AL for many years and enjoyed flying as a private pilot. He was a member of Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ for 43 years, lived in Nashville, TN for the past five years and was a member of Granny White Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Van Dorn and Katherine Jane Wilson; two infant children, Steven Morris and Thomas Daniel Wilson and wife of 53 years, Lorene Morris Wilson. He leaves a daughter, Margie Ellen Bridges and her husband, Gary, of Clarksville, TN: son, Johnnie Hal Wilson and his wife, Mary Grove Wilson, of Hartselle, AL: grandchild, Stephen Alan Bridges and his wife. Lori Sutton Bridges, of Nashville, TN and their children, Spencer. Kate and Heath: grandchild, Allison Bridges Pitsinos and her husband. John, of Nashville, TN and their children, Zoe and Max: grandchild, Julie Bridges Hamilton and her husband.
