Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean. It's because after missing two games with dizziness, the Yankees second baseman returned last night to go 5-for-6 with four RBI to lead New York to a 13-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. "Dizzy, time for the bus," shortstop Derek Jeter yelled to him in the clubhouse. Knoblauch may have followed Jeter to the team bus, but Jeter was following Knoblauch around the bases all night. The two led off the game with back-to-back homers, then scored again in the second inning as New York jumped to a 9-2 lead after three.

The Sounds had three season highs and tied a fourth in the lopsided victory. Nashville's 17 runs are a season-high, passing the 15 scored just two nights ago. The Sounds also had a season-high 21 hits and equaled a season-high with the six home runs.

In the first inning, the Sounds scored a season-high 10 runs, including three homers. Chad Hermansen, Reed Secrist and Mike Robertson each homered in the first for Nashville. "It's obviously nice to put up a 10-spot in the first," Manager Trent Jewett said. "A variety of guys contributed and that's what we'll need down the stretch." For Hermansen, it was his PCL-leading 28th home run, a two-run shot Hermansen left after one at-bat, fouling a ball off his left ankle. He's OK and is expected to play in tonight's series opener at Las Vegas.

Hermansen's Ray Montgomery, homered in the third inning. It was his 16th of the season, a two-run blast. Montgomery was 4-for-5 with three RBI. Secrist, who added a solo homer in the fourth inning, drove in five runs. Robertson had four hits and drove in three runs and Tim Laker added a two-run homer for Nashville.

Nashville starter Kane Davis (3-1) gave up five hits in seven innings to earn the win. Keith McDonald hit a grand slam homer for Memphis, which managed only six hits. Roster move: Pitcher Jimmy Anderson will be called up to the Pirates, replacing Jason Christiansen. Chris Peters, in Nashville on a rehab assignment, will take Anderson's place in the rotation. Bill Hohn, one of the 13 National League umpires being let go, ran Into travel problems headed to Milwaukee and didn't make it to last night's Montreal-Milwaukee game until the fifth Inning.

Hohn's crew worked Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia, and after the game he went to his nearby home. When he traveled yesterday, his plane was delayed by mechanical difficulties, the Brewers said. For the first four innings, a three-man crew worked the game, with crew chief Terry Tata behind the plate, Tom Hallion at first and Paul Schrieber at third. Hohn went to second base as soon as he got to County Stadium. Tata and Hallion also are among the 13 NL umpires whose resignations, effective Sept.

2, were accepted Thursday. YANKEES DEALING FOR LEYRITZ: Jim Leyrltz Is on the verge of going back to the New York Yankees. Leyrltz, who's hit clutch postseason home runs for both the Yankees and the San Diego Padres, could be dealt from San Diego to New York tonight's deadline, the Associated Press report. The Padres would probably get a prospect or two in return. Leyritz broke a bone in his left hand at Los Angeles on June 23.

SNOW DEAL: First baseman J.T. Snow signed a new four-year, $24 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. The team also exercised one-year options for All-Stars Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent. A-5 641. Yankees are likely to keep Pettitte Gannett News Service i BOSTON New York Yankees manager Joe Torre doesn't want to trade Andy Pettitte. He calls him 1 an integral part of two World Se- ries championship teams. General manager Brian Cash-man believes Pettitte can turn his "season around and reiterated his trust in the pitcher who won World Series games for the Yankees last year and in 1996. That's why the struggling Pettitte will remain with the Yankees when tonight's midnight trading deadline expires.

Although clearly not pleased that's what well do. But as the manager, he has to take the responsibility if it doesnt work out" Of course, Steinbrenner could change his mind if the Yankees are blown away by a proposal, but all indications point to a slim market "A trade might help us in one area, but it might weaken us in another," Torre said. "We'd have to improve ourselves overall if we're going to trade Pettitte. I still believe we're not in any desperate shape to make a deal. I think we're fine now.

We still ave a good record." with how Pettitte has pitched, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner yesterday gave his strongest endorsement yet for not making a trade. "I think 111 have to go with what Torre says and what Cashman says," Steinbrenner said. "If Torre and Cashman feel he can turn it around, then that's good enough for me. If Torre and Cash-man feel we can win with him, then I probably won't interfere. "I have the utmost confidence in Joe.

How can I not? We've won two World Series with him.
