2 THE TENNESSEAN Thureday, July 29 1999 0 5C SFORiS: BASEBALL Trade Rv R(KS NFWUAN By ROSS NEWHAN talk heavy but available impact talent light bring the city to life," Houston Gen mortgaged their future. him a seller and permits him to wear a mask. He has two available pitchers Omar Olivares (8-9, 4.05 ERA) and Chuck Finley (5-9, 5.68) and reportedly is trying to hold up interested teams, at least for now. He is said to have asked the Cincinnati Reds for Brett Tomko and Danny Graves for Olivares, and he is seeking power-hitting Richie Sexson, infielder Enrique Wilson and a pitcher from Cleveland for Finley, who at a struggling 36 and eligible to re-sign with the Angels as a free agent at the end of the season isnt the "slam-dunk guy" Hart covets. The Indians, however, arent going to give up Sexson and Wilson to rent Finley, and the Yankees, who would like to keep him away from the Indians and are believed to be offering Andy Pettitte (7-7, 5.57), arent going to part with shortstop Alfonso Soriano, their top prospect The introduction of the wild card three years ago significantly changed the landscape as teams try to decide if they're in or out of the race, if they should retain a key player or try to trade him.

"With the wild card, July 31 is really too early for a final determination on whether you're in or out," Philadelphia GM Ed Wade said. The young Phillies have developed into a legitimate contender, stripping the market of the coveted Curt Schilling, and the Toronto Blue Jays, the new wild-card leader in the American League, have taken David Wells and Kelvim Escobar off the market and are hesitant to trade Pat Hentgen as well. "I will say, unequivocally, that Schilling will not be traded," Wade said. "Our goal is to build around Los Angeles Times As the clock ticks toward Saturday's midnight deadline for the 30 major league teams to trade without waivers, baseball has turned into telephone heaven. The lines are buzzing and rumors are rampant, but the only certainty, as Cleveland General Manager John Hart put it, is that "there is not that one, slam-dunk guy out there." He referred to a No.

1 or 2 caliber pitcher who could be counted on to take a contender to the playoffs. Which is what Randy Johnson did for the Houston Astros last year after he was obtained from the Seattle Mariners on the night of the deadline. "We didnt win the World Series with Randy, but he helped us win the division title and he helped him. "We're hopeful of adding a veteran pitcher to the rotation before the -deadline, but there's a lot of compe-' tition." If pitching werent so thin, would a sane general manager trade for either of those available suspects? Or for Darryl Kile, who is 5-10 with a 6.34 ERA and is owed $8 million next year? 1 Kile, packaged with Darryl Ham-ilton and $1 million, was almost traded Monday by the Colorado: Rockies to the Milwaukee Brewers for Marquis Grissom and Scott Karl before the Brewers backed out Steve Trachsel (3-14, 6.55), Darren Oliver (5-7, 4.72), Kent Mercker (4-4, 5.15), Juan Guzman (5-8, 4.21), Alex Fernandez (4-6, 3.01) and the dreaded Carlos Perez (2-10, 7.43) are also among available starting pitchers. eral Manager Jerry Hunsicker said.

"There's some good pitchers out there now, but I dont see any pri-mo guys of Randy's caliber," Hunsicker said. "It's a seller's market, and I'm not going to overpay for a guy who wont have a significant impact" There arent many of Johnson's capability anywhere, but several familiar names high salaried and high risk are likely to move before the deadline. Two already have. The San Francisco Giants obtained Livan Hernandez from the Florida Marlins, and the New York Mets got Kenny Rogers from the Oakland Athletics. The price for Hernandez was two No.

1 draft choices, Jason Grilli and Nate Bump, both pitchers. Some in baseball felt the Giants Said Hunsicker, who dealt pitching prospects Freddy Garcia and John Halama, both in the Seattle rotation, and young infielder Carlos Guillen, who began this season as Seattle's second baseman before suffering a season-ending knee injury, for Johnson: "Arguably, the Giants gave up better talent for Livan Hernandez than we gave up to get Randy Johnson. "That's the kind of risks you're going to have to take this year, with the market as thin as it is," he said. "I mean, a lot more mistakes are made trying to juice a trade at the deadline than at any other time. You can count on overpaying if you're a buyer at the deadline." Consider Bill Bavasi, the Angels' general manager.

His team is done, which makes Twins 5, Athletics 3 O's stop Rangers' streak Associated Press BALTIMORE For a change, Charles Johnson helped the Baltimore Orioles by starring at the plate, instead of behind it Johnson drove in four runs and Scott Erickson won his sixth straight decision as the Orioles ended the Texas Rangers' nine-game winning streak. 8-6 last night Baltimore obtained Johnson for his skill in mowing down would-be base stealers and for his ability to deftly handle pitchers. The catcher has delivered in that regard, but has been relatively silent with his bat. Against the Rangers, however, Johnson had a pair of two-run doubles for his first multiple-RBI game since June 13. Oakland AB Bl BB SO Avo.

Indians 7, Tigers 2 1 CEL 1 Umps turn on leaders NEW YORK More than a dozen major league umpires last night criticized their leadership for "a flawed and doomed strategy" that apparently will cost 22 umps their jobs.

Meanwhile, baseball officials said ability, racial and ethnic background, and experience will be among the factors used by to decide which 19 National League umpires to take back and which 13 to let go. After the collapse of the union's planned Sept. 2 walkout, many of the umpires who kept their jobs blamed the mess on the leadership group, headed by union president Jerry Crawford and Richie Phillips, the umps' negotiator since 1978. "The major league umpires have been seriously harmed because union leadership adopted a flawed strategy that was doomed to fail from the beginning," said the statement, agreed to by a group that Included Joe Brinkman, John Hirsch-beck, Dave Phillips, Dale Scott and Rocky Roe. "The advice to quit Jobs in order to keep them made no sense at all," the group said, "especially under a collective bargaining contract that not only ruled out strikes, but also ruled out 'other concerted work The statement will be formally issued today.

Management officials and lawyers spent much of yesterday trying to make decisions on the NL umps, and they said they expected to make their choices by the end of this week. In the completion of a suspended game prior to last night's regularly-scheduled game, the Redbirds won 5-2.

In the nightcap Brinkley also had another homer and Chad Ramirez added a shot to give Nashville four home runs for the game. The Sounds got 14 runs in the last three innings and the 15 runs for the game, were a season-high for the Sounds. "This win was real important," Sounds Manager Trent Jewett said. "The last two games I thought we had mental breakdowns, or six innings we looked flat, which was disappointing to me. But our guys showed why we are where we are." Memphis' Kris Detmers hit a two-run double in the second to lead 2-0.

The Redbirds extended the lead to 4-0 in the third. Then in the eighth, Hermansen's 26th home run of the year was the highlight of four runs, giving Nashville a commanding 104 lead. Jeff Wallace (1-0) got the win and Brian Barnes (3-2) suffered the loss. When play resumed in the 8th inning, it was tied 1-1. Memphis had runners on first and third with two outs.

Eduardo Perez then hit a 3-run homer off Jim Dougherty. Jimmy Anderson got the loss and fell to 11-2. Anderson also started the second game but left after the fifth inning trailing 2-0 for a no-decisioa Associated Press CLEVELAND Dwight Gooden has been coming to Jacobs Field the past two weeks fearing Indians Manager Mike Hargrove might want to talk to him. Gooden had been afraid his days in Cleveland were numbered, and that he might be on the trading block. But after his performance last night, the only trip Gooden might be making is back to the starting rotation.

After warming up in the bullpen with his son, Dwight standing next to him, Gooden pitched seven solid innings for his first win since May 18 in Cleveland's 7-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. Gooden (3-3) made the most of his first start since July 2, limiting the Tigers to five hits. The right-hander hasnt been happy pitching in relief and was further miffed last week when he lost a chance to start in New York when Hargrove changed his mind. But mixing a 94 mph fastball with a nasty curve, Gooden got his first win in 13 appearances four in relief struck out a season-high eight, and walked two. "It was important because this has been the strangest year of my career," said Gooden, who has bounced between being the Indians' No.

White Sox 11, Yankees 3 CHICAGO Magglio Ordonez and Ray Durham homered in a six-run fifth inning as the Chicago White Sox snapped the New York Yankees' seven-game winning streak. Ordonez, who had two home runs Tuesday night, hit his 24th over the center-field fence off Dan Naulty to open the fifth. Durham hit a two-run shot later in the inning and added an RBI triple in the seventh for the White Sox, who won for only the fifth time in their last 16 games. Andy Pettitte (7-8) took the loss, the first by a Yankees starter in the last 11 games.
