Conveniently located in Cool Springs www.labellacoolsprings.com Shotgun start Johnson: Director wants salary, $200,000 to walk son, was hired to a new position that the board had not approved. The board later ruled that Tanya Johnson's employment in the school district violated a board policy regarding hiring of family members, and her hiring was rescinded. Board members have cited other concerns with the way the school district has been managed under Johnson's direction, including communication misfires and organizational problems. Earlier this month, the board decided it would put Johnson's contract on its agenda for last night's meeting to as some members put it let him know he should start looking for a new job. The letter from Johnson's attorney alludes to a strained relationship between the school board and director, stating that "various rationales have been offered for the board's alleged dissatisfaction with Dr.

Johnson. However, each area of purported concern is a matter of public record in the minutes of the board and was known to the board prior to completion of its July 2003 evaluation which reported high satisfaction with Dr. Johnson consistent with the December 2002 evaluation." Earlier in the letter, Venick makes reference to a positive December 2002 evaluation by the school board of Johnson and says that, because of this evaluation, "Dr. Johnson did not initiate any steps earlier this year to investigate the availability of comparable positions for which he would otherwise be interested and qualified. "Had he been advised that his position with the board was tenuous that there was little likelihood that his contract would be renewed, Dr.

Johnson would have taken appropriate steps earlier this year to assure his continued employment elsewhere." In fact, the board's evaluation of Johnson in July is not as positive as that given to him by the same school board in December. The format of the two evaluations is not exactly the same, so it is hard to compare them side by side. But the December version lists a page and a half of commendations compared to three "concerns." In summary, the December evaluation finds that "the board's review of the performance of Dr. Johnson indicated a high degree of satisfaction as well as an affirmation of support for his performance." Johnson's evaluation in July was not as strong. In it, board members' responses to a survey designed by the Tennessee School Boards Association indicate that Johnson "met expectations" in of the 30 survey items.

Areas in which Johnson fared the best include student achievement and facilities and finance. Johnson received the lowest marks in his relations with the school board, staff and personnel.
