Six batters, to be exact. Turner Ward's two-run single in the first inning broke a string of 18 consecutive innings without a run. The Sounds scored in each of their first four at-bats on the way to a decisive 11-2 victory before a Greer Stadium crowd of 11,297. Ward's base hit keyed a four-run rally, and Nashville added three runs in both the second and third innings to give starter Frank Castillo more than enough support. "That's a little closer to what I think we're capable of offensively than what we got the first couple of days after the break," Nashville Manager Trent Jewett said after his team stopped a three-game losing streak.

"I thought the guys showed some hunger in pregame and it carried over into the game." Castillo (6-2), who added a double and a pair of runs in the Sounds' attack, scored more than he gave up allowing just one run on three hits over seven innings. "It's no secret we're going to have to lean on Castillo down the stretch," Jewett said of the veteran right-hander, who allowed just three baserunners through the first four innings before Eduardo Perez led off the fifth with a home run. "I thought he was a little out of synch in the late innings probably from being on base about 30 minutes total and from going so long eight days between starts." Tim Laker sparked the offense, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Every member of the starting lineup had at least one hit, as the Sounds rapped out 16 against three Memphis pitchers. "It was just a matter of time," said Laker, who has thrown out five of six attempted base-stealers in the series.

"We've got too many guys that can hit. I guess it was just a case of breaking off the all-star break rust. We've got too good an offensive team to be kept down for too many games." Today's game: vs. Memphis, 4 p.m. The five-game series finale features the top two winners in the Pacific Coast League LHP Jimmy Anderson (11-1, 3.92) for the Sounds, RHP Larry Luebbers (114, 3.91) for the visiting Redbirds.

Talent search: Outfielder Darryl Brinkley became the first Sound to sing the national anthem. Chipping in: Former Sounds catcher Chris Tremie picked up his first career major league RBI yesterday, and it was a big one the eventual game-winner as Pitts-burgh out-slugged Cleveland 13-10. Tremie, who had scored on Al Martin's two-run homer in the fourth inning, singled to drive in Warren Morris in the sixth to give the Pirates an 11-6 lead that they never gave up. Yesterday's game, in which he went l-for4, represented the first action Tremie has seen with Pittsburgh since being called up on July 9. He previously had major league stints with the White Sox in 1995 and with the Rangers last season, batting .185 (5-27) in 12 games.
