Astacio singled three limes and gave up only four hits in eight-plus innings last night for a 6-2 victory overCirannarj. Although Astacio (9-8) has been inconsistent from start to start, he's been the best starter on a pitching staff that has the highest earned run average in the major leagues. 'You get a good feeling about him when you come to trie park," manager Jim Leyland said.

'1 had a good feeling today coming to the park." Trie Rockies snapped their streak of eight consecutive road losses and also got their first win in five games against the Reds this season. Combined with Houston's 2-1 victory over Detroit, the loss dropped the Reds out of first place in the NL Central. Person (3-2) gave up three runs, five hits and three walks in six innings.

All three Red Sox runs came on homers Brian Daubach's two-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot by Jason Varitek in the second as the Red Sox built a 3-0 lead. Wayne Gomes got the final four outs for his 13th save. Bret Saberhagen (6-3) allowed five runs, including both homers, and nine hits in five innings to snap a four game winning streak. Martins 4, Blue Jays 2 TORONTO Alex Gonzalez drove in two runs, including a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh inning, as the Florida Marlins continued their interleague success with a win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Marlins are 30-15 since interleague play began in 1997, including 104 this season.

They are 7-1 against the Blue Jays. Dennis Springer (4-10) allowed 11 hits but just two runs in eight innings as Florida won its third straight Pat Hentgen (6-7) took the loss.1 Assoc iated Press ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -Speed, speed and more speed. The New York Mets practically ran the Tampa Bay Devil Rays out of their own ballpark for the second straight game, stealing five bases in a 9-7 victory last night.

Matt Franco hit a two-run homer and Mike Piazza continued his torrid hitting, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. But it was the speed of Rickey Henderson and Roger Cedeno that devastated the Devil Rays. Henderson went 3-for-3, including a run-scoring single off Dave Eiland (1-5). He also walked twice and stole a season-high three bases, giving him 27 this season. Cedeno also had two hits and swiped two bases, hiking his major league-leading total to 50.

The five steals by the Mets were one shy of the club record. "The biggest thing is to keep them off base, and we haven't done that," Devil Rays manager Larry Rothschild said of Henderson and Cedeno, who have eight stolen bases in the series. Henderson has reached base in eight of 10 plate appearances, while Cedeno with help from a couple of Tampa Bay errors has been on seven of 10 times. "We've scored a lot of runs the past couple of nights without the middle of our order doing a lot of damage," Mets manager Bobby Valentine said. "That's the sign of a good team." Rick Reed (7-3) allowed five runs and eight hits in six innings to win his fourth straight decision.

Orioles 9, Expos 4 BALTIMORE Harold Baines went 4-for-5 with a homer and Mike Mussina got his 12th victory as the Baltimore Orioles won their fourth straight. Mussina (124) allowed four hits and struck out 10 in seven innings before leaving with a 9-1 lead. The right-hander, who is on a pace to win 20 games for the first time, is second in the AL in wins behind Boston's Pedro Martinez (15). The four hits were a season high for Baines, who led Baltimore's 17-hit attack with his 20th homer and a pair of RBI. Montreal, starter Dan Smith (14) gave up four runs and eight hits in four innings.

The Nashville Sounds were shut out for the second straight game, their scoring drought extending to 18 innings as Memphis got out with a 7-0 victory last night Southpaw phenom Rick Ankiel put the Nashville offense in a vise, striking out 10 in six innings and giving up just five hits never more than one in any single inning.

"If you know anything about baseball, you could look out there on the field and know he was one of the better players out there," Nashville Manager Trent Jewett said after the loss, which came on the heels of a Redbirds' doubleheader sweep on Thursday. "That guy was one of the best pitchers I've seen in my four years in this league. I hesitate to say he's the best, because I saw Kerry Wood last year. But he's going to be a good one a great one, a No. 1 starter.

You don't see many with three major league-caliber pitches, major league command, 30-year-old poise, athletic ability they're not sitting on every street corner." Ankiel, who doesn't turn 20 until Monday, improved to 4-1 and was never really challenged throughout his stint Nashville left eight runners on five in scoring position but missed opportunities as Ankiel kept the Sounds off balance all night Particularly disappointing was a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the fourth inning, as Jeff Patzke struckout before Nashville starter Paul Ah Yat Colorado 040 100 100-6.
