A S16 million 840 interchange near the site and water and sewer services should give the area prune development potential in an underserved area, Brooke said. "Driving 840 from Murfrees-boro to Lebanon recently, I realized I was low on gas, but there wasnt even any place to pull over and fill up." The additional acreage probably will be included as part, of a master plan for the area "Dover has not spent a 1 it of time yet thinking about the extra acres, but once construction gets started, I think it will come up on their radar," Brooke said.

Savvy investors wise beyond their years fr- ''iJT'. i fn "twin -iT' 3 MS Commentary Retirement doesn't have to be taxing My spouse is planning to retire in September. He will receive about $14,400 in Social Security and a $32,400 pension, for a total of $4600.

He will be 64 in September. He is desperate to know what his tax liability will be. I also plan to retire in September, but I have no pension. I am only 60, and might be eligible for only about $800 in Social Security later. I have an IRA but I'm not getting it out What will our tax be? There will be some tax if you and your husband dont have any deductions to offset any of your income.

But you dont have to get socked in the jaw by the Internal Revenue Service each April 15. In fact, it was an IRS person who suggested you soften the tax blow headed your way every year. Actually, you have a choice, said Gaye Parnell, communications manager for the IRS here. You can file quarterly estimated tax payments or you can fill out a Form W-4P to have part of your pension income set aside all during the year, just as you did with your salary when you were working, she said. Check with your pension fund provider for the form or call the IRS at 1-800-829-3676 or on the 'Net at www.irs.ustreas.gov.

A combination of Social Security income and pension, 40100, 403(b) or other investment income could result in taxation of part of your Social Security, said Lechelle Moore, certified financial planner at First American Investment Services. Up to half of your Social Security can be taxed if your other income is between $32,000 and $44,000. If your other income is more than $44,000, that taxablechunkgoesto85, Moore said. So how miieh wll you be taxed? There's not a simple answer, because the IRS makes you wander through one of its "if line 5 is zero, use line 7" worksheets. Parnell worked it out using a couple of assumptions: that one of you is age 65, that you are married filing jointly, that you have no other adjustments to your income and that you have no deductions.

You end up with about $3X) worth of taxable Social Security income and about $3,450 in total tax to pay. Receiving a pension, no matter how large the payment might be, is not going to affect that Social Security payment you get each month, said John Trollinger, spokesman for the agency. "No matter how much income you have, no matter what the source pension, 401(k), IRA, investments you will get Social Security as determined by the number of years you worked and the credits accumulated," he said. But since 1994, you may not have been able to keep it all if you have other income. "For years, Social Security wasnt taxable at all," Parnell observed.

Like their peers nationwide, they weren't as market-shy as their parents were at the same age, thanks in part to the vast sea of information available to them via print, broadcast and even the Internet, said Margaret Draper, spokeswoman at the Securities Industry Associatioa It started with their parents, she said.

"The transference of responsibility for retirement funds has had a big influence in bringing investment into the living room, into family talk. "People are responsible for determining their retirement" as more companies set up 40100 savings plans for workers, she said. "Americans see a need for educating themselves. Their children are absorbing it" They're absorbing it to the tune of turning that $100,000 nest egg into $173,005 in 10 weeks, as in the case of five seventh-graders at Cason Lane Academy in Murfreesboro. The team Megan Neal, Megan Snyder, Amy Rideout Elizabeth Kneidinger and Crystal Wilson outperformed 500 Middle Tennessee teams in the semi-annual Stock Market Game.

"We got into this thing during math, doing the research," Elizabeth Kneidinger said. "We talked it out" before making purchases during the game last fall.
