I 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 I I I I I 3 THE TENNESSEAN Thursday, July 1999 7B LOCAL NEWS Journalist charged with felony theft By LEON M. TUCKER Staff Writer Former Nashville journalist Jacque Srouji has been charged in Harris County, Texas, with felony theft of $25,000 worth of electronic equipment from a Catholic publication she edited until April of this year. Srouji, 55, a former copy editor at The Tennessean, is free on $5,000 bond after being charged June 22 on a complaint by Catholic Diocese of Galveston-Houston. A hearing scheduled for Tuesday was postponed until July 27. Neither Srouji, who reportedly now lives in Amarillo, Texas, nor her attorney, Rusty Hardin, could be reached for comment yesterday.

Hardin told the Houston Chronicle last month that the charges are a mistake. "The diocese needs to look carefully at the laws of libel and slander because what they're doing to this woman is outrageous." The diocese is seeking restitution from Srouji. Srouji was fired by The Tennessean in early 1976 after it was discovered that she had been an FBI informant and was providing information to the federal agency on co-workers at the newspaper. She also worked for several years at the former Nashville Banner. Srouji began work as the editor of the Texas Catholic Herald in Houston in November of 1997 and worked there until she was fired in April for "several irregularities and improprieties" according to Herald spokeswoman Annette Gonzales Taylor.

"She missed numerous deadlines," Taylor said. "But when an internal audit was done, it turned up questionable expenditures she had made with diocese money for equipment that the diocese did not have in its possession." But that may come to an end with the new year if one major hurdle can be cleared next month. The state Department of Conservation and Environment is seeking public comment on its plans to issue permits for a new landfill located along Dump Road near the Cedar Grove community. Wilson County Solid Waste, Superintendent Bill Arnold said he doesn't expect any opposition from Cedar Grove community residents over developing the 160-acre site as a Class I landfill.

"They wanted the county to buy it and we have tried to be good neighbors," Arnold said. Shipping garbage out of the county to a private landfill in Rutherford County is costing Wilson County about $30,000 a month. Most of that could be saved if the county had its own landfill, Arnold said. The state will accept comments until Aug. 4.

If there is sufficient interest, the state will hold a public hearing. Those wishing to submit written comments should send them to Mike Apple, Director, Division of Solid Waste Management, Tower, 5th Floor, 401 Church Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Nashville, TN 37243-1535. For more information, call 532-0780. Barring major opposition, Arnold hopes to see the landfill open by the new year. But before that can happen, a contractor will have to move an estimated 250,000 cubic yards of dirt to prepare the site.
