METROPOLITAN MORTUARY SERVICE 228-6109 Victims look to block rapist's parole FROM PAGE 1B used a toy plastic pistol because he did not want to hurt anyone. He did not attempt to inflict physical injury to the victim. To the contrary, he placed a pair of scissors in close proximity to the victim so that she could free herself after he exited the residence.

"Moreover, the overwhelming weight of the evidence is that the appellant can be rehabilitated." Borum is an inmate at Nashville's DeBerry Special Needs Facility, where Tennessee sex offenders are housed. He would not get out until 2013 if he serves the entire sentence. The mother of one of the two 11-year-old girls had been watching a ball game in the summer of 1986 at the field behind Lipscomb Elementary School when the girls walked up to the school to look in their old fifth-grade classroom. "He came up in his truck and parked it in front of the window and blocked them in," the mother said. "He was driving around wearing nothing but a shirt, had a gun which they thought was real.

It's hard to believe, but it was kind of early evening, late afternoon, and no one saw this because he had them blocked where you couldn't see, so people probably just thought it was somebody parked there. "He proceeded to digitally rape them, and my daughter thought he took pictures. He said that if they told anybody he'd kill them, and that he'd find their families and kill them, too. "Then he just drove away." But the girls got a partial license tag number and gave police a description of the truck and what their attacker was wearing. The two girls were so frightened and traumatized by the attack that they didn't say anything about it right away, the mother said.

"It was several weeks or a month later. They were going back to school and I was going to have a HAMPTON, William Thomas April 25, 1999. Preceded in death by William T. "That's when we found out." Brentwood detectives arrested Borum, a former Ohio University teacher of the year, but the charges subsequently were reduced to assault. It was that case on which Harris based his order designating Borum as a multiple rapist. The two victims identified Borum in an array of photos, but not in person, and Borum, now 43, received two years probation and was ordered to get counseling in a plea bargain arrangement. Police say Borum also was a suspect in a separate incident months later when a young Brentwood girl told authorities that a man in a blue pickup truck tried to force her into his vehicle at gunpoint as she walked along Knox Valley Drive near Lipscomb Elementary. That girl escaped, and no charges were ever filed.

But on June 16, 1994, a man wearing a stocking mask burst into a home in Brentwood's posh Belle Rive subdivision and at gunpoint twice raped the woman who lived there. The details of that case present a chilling account of Borum's attack. That victim said she first thought her attacker was one of her son's friends playing a cruel joke. But when the man held the gun to her temple, she realized he was a stranger and thought she was going to die. The man ordered the woman to lie face down on the floor while he used a pair of stockings to tie her hands behind her back.

She said he stripped off her jogging shorts and panties, put them over her head to block her vision and turned her over on her back. Twice, the man pressed the pistol to her temple. Both times she thought she was on the brink of death. The man ordered her to talk dirty to him and curse him as he performed oral sex on her, then vaginally raped her. When the rapist was finished, he asked the victim where she kept her valuables, and she told him about $260 in an upstairs dresser drawer.

But as the rapist walked back downstairs with the money, the victim's husband walked in the front door, having just returned from a business trip to Chattanooga. They saw each other at the same instant, and the rapist pointed the fake gun at the husband and made a sound as if it had been fired. The husband spun around and ran out the front door as the rapist fled through the garage. As the rapist sped away in his car, the husband ran back inside and called 911. Minutes later, Franklin police spotted the rapist's car on Berry's Chapel Road and Cotton Lane and chased him.

The toy gun was tossed from the car during the chase. The officers got the car stopped, ordered the rapist out and arrested him. At Borum's trial, friends testified that Borum had taught high school and college courses, had been named Ohio University's teacher of the year and for three years had taught children's summer school classes. The friends used words like "intelligent, kind, fun-loving, gentle, loving and likable" when they described him.
