C2 vwwtennesseaAOom THE TENNESSEAN Sunday, September 5, 1999 11C SPORTS RPM goes from reserve to World Grand Champion ByCHIPCIRILLO Sports Writer SHELBYVDLLE RPM, which won last night's World Grand Championship, sold for $1.25 million last spring and was the reserve champion last year. Generator's Champion took third. Dunn has been a trainer for 50 years. RPM almost had to withdraw from the Celebration when trainer Sammy Day's suspension for an incident in 1997 went into effect after a 10-day reprieve was revoked. However, Partners the stallion's ownership group turned the reins over to Dunn, RPM's original trainer.

"He came out hitting the first time I rode him," Dunn said. "I think he's as good a horse as there's ever been. I'm not saying he's the best, but he's good." Other events Atlanta's William Johnson rode Mister Pushbutton to the World Grand Championship in the Owner-Amateur Riders On Walking Horses Class. In the 15.2 And Under Class, Rodney Dick rode The Duck to the World Grand Championship. Willie Cook Jr.

of Dacula, rode Ironworks to the World Grand Championship in the Plantation Pleasure World Grand Championship. Out On parole, ridden by Steve Dunn, won the World Grand the trainer from Dacula, Ga, rode Strike It Rich to the blue ribbon in the Western Plantation Pleasure World Grand Championship. "The crowd really got behind me," Cook said. "I hardly ever smile, but I was smiling and tipping my hat tonight We've got a good following." It was Cook's fourth World Grand Championship as a rider. Red Eagle Farms has done exceptionally well with 12 blues, four reserves and four third-place finishes through Friday's classes.

Another blue: Gen's Fire Ice is no stranger to the blue ribbon circle. "That was his 30th blue ribbon at the Celebration," said Susan Gordon after riding him to victory in the Owner-Amateur Riders Specialty World Grand Championship. Magic touch: Shelbyville's Parti Gray has only shown three horses in the Celebration, but she's won the World Grand Championship each time. Friday was her most recent victory as she rode Generator's Showboat to the blue ribbon in the Walking Horse Trainers' Auxiliary Members Specialty Class. "He was just wonderful, just awesome," said Gray, whose husband, Tim, rode Generator's Silver Dollar in last night's big stake.

Championship in the 2-Year-Old Class. Franklin's Knox Blackburn, who won the big stake aboard Masquerading last year, was named Trainer of the Year. The 32-year-old trainer has won 22 World Championships and three World Grand Championships. 4-year-olds Pushover's Power-stroke doesn't know what it's like to finish at the back of the pack. "He's never been below third in his life," trainer Jackie McConnell said after riding the stallion to victory in the 4-Year-Old Walking Horse World Grand Championship Friday night.

Powerstroke earned the blue ribbon before a record crowd of 21,996 at the 61st Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. "He made a great show," McConnell said. "He's got a lot of walk and a lot of motioa" Powerstroke was the reserve in last year's 3-year-old championship and he won the 2-year-old amateur. Next year Powerstroke probably will go for the big stake. It was the second straight championship for McConnell in the 4-year-old class after last year's win aboard All American Cash.

on Teimessean staff reports MEMPHIS Nashville suffered a major setback to its playoff hopes yesterday afternoon, losing 8-5 at Memphis despite two home runs in a strong offensive show by Tim Laker. Placido Polanco singled in the winning run for Memphis and scored three others as the Redbirds put the damper on Nashville's chase of Oklahoma in the Eastern Division title race. The Sounds remain one game behind Oklahoma with two games rerriaining in the regular season after the RedHawks fell to Omaha 7-6 last night. Polanco, a shortstop, went 1-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base. His RBI single in the eighth inning began a three-run rally that broke a 5-5 tie.

David Hulse followed Polanco with an RBI single, and Keith McDonald drew a bases-loaded walk to cap scoring. "It's tough when you're in the position to make things happen and you don't execute," Sounds manager Trent Jewett said. "It's my job to put the right guys in the right situations. "We had several chances with runners at third and less than two out and didn't get it done. Fundamentally, we broke down." Bryan Eversgerd (6-6) got the victory with one inning of scoreless relief for the Redbirds and Rick Heiserman picked up his 19th save.

Jim Dougherty (3-3) took the loss when the Redbirds picked up four hits and scored three runs off the reliever. Mike Robertson, pushed his streak to 12 games, also going 1-for-5. Laker's two-run homer in the seventh gave the Sounds a 5-4 lead, but Memphis came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie it on Chris Richard's single that scored Jason LaRiviers. Laker went 3-for-3, reaching base safely all five times he batted.

He drove in three runs with his two homers and a double. Laker also walked and was hit by a pitch and scored three runs. "Other than the effort and emotion of Tim Laker today, I don't take much positive from this game," Jewett added. Memphis scored three runs in the first two irinings off Nashville starter Todd Van PoppeL Van Poppel would finish with six inings, giving up six hits, five runs, four of which were earned. He walked three and struck out four.

Matt Dunbar pitched the seventh, giving up a single that scored the tying run for Memphis. The Sounds (80-58) cranked out 12 hits, three by Laker before he left the game in the ninth inning.
