He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant J.G. in World War 11, was educated at Loudon High School, Hiwasee College, Commercial Arts School, U.S. Navy Signal School and Harvard University Electronics. He was a 1948 graduate of University of North Carolina and did graduate work at Georgia Tech. He worked with Thomas W.

Gardner Architects, Howard Hickerson and Jordan, Hart-Freeland Roberts and was the Owner of the practice of Gil Carter and Associates from 1955 to the present.
