1 4B Thursday, AuKut 26 1999 THE TCNNESSEAN LOCAL NEWS Racetrack to be christened Nashville Superspeedway By LARRY WOODY Sftorts Writer Nashville Superspeedway will be the name of the new $125 million racetrack being built in Wilson County, developer Denis McGlynn said yesterday. "We wanted a name that would convey to fans all around the country where the track is located," said McGlynn, president of Dover Downs Entertainment, who will be on hand for today's formal groundbreaking. "Nashville Superspeedway makes sense to the extent that it helps out-of-state people determine where we are. They'll know we are in the Nashville metropolitan area." The track is scheduled to begin operation in the spring of 2001. The site on which the superspeedway will be constructed lies between Lebanon and Murfrees-boro, approximately 25 miles east of Nashville.

Naming a track after the nearest large city is not unusual. Atlanta Motor Speedway is about 25 miles racing, and its weekly program has developed several of the sport's top drivers. McGlynn said he hoped to continue to build on that heritage and legacy. Nashville Superspeedway will be constructed on a site. The 1 13-mile superspeedway will be one of several tracks built on the huge motorsports complex.

McGlynn plans to eventually add a short track similar to the one at Nashville Speedway, a drag racing strip, a dirt track and a road course. He plans to offer fans a wide variety of big-league racing, including NASCAR and Indy Car events. A NASCAR Busch race is a certainty, and McGlynn said the Indy Racing League has expressed interest in a date. Landing a Winston Cup race could be a long shot since 50,000 seats would not be nearly enough to accommodate a Winston Cup crowd. McGlynn said if a Cup date becomes a possibility, the track's seating can quickly be doubled.

south of Atlanta and Charlotte Motor Speedway (now Lowe's) is some 20 miles north of Charlotte. In addition to helping identify the general location of the track, McGlynn said he wanted the new superspeedway to retain a Nashville identity.
