3 THE TENNESSEAN Tuesday, April 20 1999 7C Barratt's leaning to Vandy By MIKE ORGAN "I told Coach Stallings I wanted to make sure that Vanderbilt's a good fit for me to finish up my career and that I would be happy there." GREG BARRATT Potential Vanderbilt recruit Campbell announces retirement By ANDREW HUMBLES Sports Writer Joe Campbell, who has starred as a high school, college and professional football player in the Midstate, announced his retirement yesterday from the Nashville Kats. Campbell, 31, struggled with injuries last season and Sports Writer Vanderbilt bounced into the lead yesterday in the raCe to land Greg Barrett, a basketball transfer from Utah Valley State Community College. Barratt, who also spent a year on the national powerhouse team at the University of Utah, narrowed his choice to Vanderbilt and Cornell last month and says a visit to Vanderbilt's campus over the weekend brought bkn closer to picking the Commodores. PFhe 6-foot-9, 230-pound Barratt said he will make a decision later this week. Barratt said he liked Nashville, he liked Vanderbilt's string academic standards and most of all he liked new Cojch Kevin Stallings' plan to work him into the starting, lineup very soon.

i Barratt spent one year redshirted at Utah and the 1998 season as a reserve when the Utes made it to the national championship game, where they lost to Ken tucky. He transferred to Utah Valley State last season and averaged 14 points and almost nine rebounds per game. That leaves Barratt with just two years of eligibility remaining and he said the opportunity to step into a situation where he can play early Is very important Stallings spelled out a plan where senior Dan Langhi would move to small forward, leaving Barratt with the chance to jump into the starting lineup at power forward. "The plan if I do decide to come there is to move Langhi to the three position and I could step in at the four," Barratt said. "We'd start out there and see how it would go from there in practice and games and everything." The only player Vanderbilt lost from last year's team is Vince Ford, who backed up Langhi at the power forward position.

Standing 6-foot-5, however, Ford wasnt tall enough to play that position on a consistent basis and Langhi was unable to move to small forward. Stallings isnt allowed to comment on prospects before they've signed a letter-of-intent Barratt spoke with Stallings yesterday by phone after the Cornell coach left. "I told Coach Stallings I wanted to make sure that Vanderbilt's a good fit for me to finish up my career and that I would be happy there," Barratt said. "I asked a few more questions and got some other details I had been wondering about" SCOREBOARD Jason Allen a groin pull suffered during this preseason convinced him the time was right "Really, it was an easy decision," Campbell said. "I set some pretty high standards for rnyself and for the team.

I owed it to the Kats; it's hard to set up a game plan not knowing how I'm going to be game to game." Campbell was a two-time all-state running back at Stratford High and once held the all-time Metro rushing fa CAMPBELL Home games Today's baseball games Dyersburg St. at Aquinas (DH), 1 p.m. Montevallo at Lipscomb, 2 p.m. ETSU at Tennessee, 6 p.m. MTSU at Vanderbilt, 7 p.m.

Campbell went on to Middle Tennessee State from 1988-91 and was a two-time Division I-AA All-American as well as the Blue Raiders' all-time leading rusher with 3,823 yards.

After three seasons in the Canadian Football League, Campbell signed with the Kats in "97, where became a favorite with the fans and his teammates. Last year, Campbell played in just four games because of various injuries, and after pulling his groin in exhibition opener against New Jersey, he aggravated it last Friday in the preseason win over New England. "I dedicated myself and really thought I had one of the best camps I've ever had," he said. "But I hurt it and sat out a couple of days and when I went Friday it just wasnt there." Cory Fleming played with Campbell at Stratford as well as both years on the Kats. "It's something he has to decide.

I know it's hard for any athlete to play in pain," Fleming said. "The team is definitely going to miss him, plus I will because we pushed each other." Campbell has been one of the more popular players with the fans and his teammates. "IH still be around, 111 go to the games," Campbell said. 'This is family." During offseasons, Campbell has worked at the Dede Wallace Center with at-risk children and said he would like to get into coaching football. Roster moves: The Kats trimmed their roster to the maximum 24 by waiving fullbacklinebacker Kerry Mock, trading lineman Nate Johnson and placing quarterback Billy Dicken on injured reserve.

Johnson went to New England in exchange for the rights to defensive specialist Ron Carpenter, a second-team All-Arena player last year currently signed with the NFL's St Louis Rams.1 ev NHL playoffs glance FIRST ROUND iE (Best-of-7) a EASTERN CONFERENCE Thursday, Am 22 iftsburgh al New Jersey, 6:30 p.m. rv Saturday, Aprs Pmsburgh at New Jersey, 1 p.m. Sunday, Apr! 25 New Jersey al Pittsburgh, 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aprl 27 New Jersey al Pittsburgh, 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aprl 30 Pittsburgh at New Jersey, 630 p.m., If necessary Sunday, May 2 New Jersey al Pittsburgh, 1 p.m..

NEW YORK JETS-Aeroad to terrm Pepperdine hires van Breda Kolff Los Angeles Daily News MALIBU, Calif. The standard for men's basketball in the West Coast Conference used to be Pepper-dine. Now it is Gonzaga. Former Vanderbilt coach Jan van Breda Kolff, introduced as Pepperdine's new coach yesterday morning, said he wants the bar back. "This is a unique situation," van Breda Kolff said.

"We have a very good basketball team coming back.If the work ethic is there and the determination is there, now it's just getting to that next step: getting past Gonzaga and winning the league championship." Gonzaga won the WCC title this season, upset Stanford and Florida in the NCAA tournament and was one win away from the Final Four before its run ended against eventual national champion Connecticut Pepperdine went 19-13 last season and finished second in the WCC under Coach Lorenzo Romar, who resigned in March to take the head position at Saint Louis. Pepperdine Athletic Director John Watson, who was in charge of the search committee, said van Breda Kolff was selected because of his experience, his background and his character. Lipscomb Coach Don Meyer also interviewed for the job. Prior to Pepperdine, van Breda Kolff was the head coach at Vanderbilt for six seasons and Cornell for two. Vanderbilt had six new players last year, and the Commodores struggled to a 14-15 record.

Van Breda Kolff said he wants to return the program to the prominence it had from 1981-93, when coaches Jim Harrick and Tom Asbury guided the Waves to a combined eight conference titles. The Waves were selected to play in the NIT this season, first postseason appearance in five years. "It's right on the cusp of being back where it was, back in the days when Jim and Tom were here," van Breda Kolff said. "That's our goal. Other teams in our conference will use Pepperdine as a barometer." Finding site main delay Hannah Kincade 8-8, 7-5; Rachel Chisolm (HH) d.

After almost a year's exploration of potential sites in Davidson and surrounding counties, a plot of land was chosen straddling Wilson and Rutherford counties. The site had to be rezoned from farmland to commercial, and the county had to approve certain infrastructure improvements, such as water and sewer lines. A group called CRASH County Residents Against Speedway Havoc is battling the project citing concerns over traffic, noise and water pollution. CRASH filed suit to delay the project, but McGlynn said he expects construction to begin anyway. Three years ago, $200 million Texas Motor Speedway rushed its opening to get a Winston Cup race, and ran into numerous problems.

While the track was ready, parking areas were not completed and the inaugural crowd of 160,000 ended bogged down in mud and traffic jams. McGlynn said he did not want to repeat Texas' mistake. "As much as we wanted to be racing next year, it's better to take our time and do it right" he said. "Things of value take time.".
