(3 THE TENWESSEAM Wwlnwd.y, March 196 SB Tennesseans want to gamble but not pay income tax, survey says By DUNCAN MANSFIELD Associated Press KNOXVILLE Tennesseans want a lottery but dont want to gamble on an income tax. And they are resolutely divided on abortion, according to a statewide survey released yesterday. The University of Tennessee's So cial Science Research Institute has been regularly polling Tennesseans on these issues since 1989. The news from the latest telephone query of 802 Tennesseans conducted Feb. 25-29 is that their views havent significantly changed in all that time only become more so.

Debbie Blair, executive director of Planned Parenthood of East Tennessee, said she was encouraged that, by a slim 48 to 41 margin, more Tennesseans want Roe vs. Wade upheld than want it overturned. The 1973 Supreme Court decision legalized abortion. Whether Tennessee lawmakers, who have made the state's abortion laws more restrictive in recent years by requiring parental consent for minors, should make abortions "harder- to get was a closer call. Forty-one percent said the state's abortion laws were "about right" Forty percent said abortions should be tougher to get Only 4 said they should be easier and 13 weren't sure.

"We have more work to do," said Paul Dunn III, office manager and board member for Tennessee Right to Life in Knoxville. The survey's results, which have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points, show a con sistent pattern. Among those with an opinion on abortions, the breakdown of supporters and opponents is virtually the same as in 1989. Seven of 10 Tennesseans surveyed want a lottery, up from six of 10 in 1989. Nearly seven of 10 Tennesseans oppose a state income tax, the largest spread in six years.
