Kirk Muller officially became a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, when the league approved a three-team trade made earlier in the day, the New York Islanders said. As part of the deal, the Islanders obtained center Martin Straka and junior defenseman Bryan Berard, the top-pick in the 1995 draft, from the Ottawa Senators and left wing Ken Belanger from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Senators received backup netmind-er Damian Rhodes from Toronto and defenseman Wade Redden from the Islanders. SENATORS FIRE ANOTHER COACH The Ottawa Senators, with the worst record in the NHL, fired Coach Dave Allison. This was the second time this season the Senators have dismissed their coach.

Rick Bowness was fired Nov. 20. QUINN TO FLYERS The Philadelphia Flyers reacquired veteran center Dan Quinn from the Senators in exchange for future considerations. Quinn, 30, played with the Flyers in 1991-92. PANTHERS 5, CAPITALS 4 Johan Gar-penlov capped his third career hat trick by scoring the godhead goal with 55.4 seconds left as the Florida Panthers extended their unbeaten streak to six games by defeating the host Washington Capitals.

Phoenix changes format Until this year, the Phoenix Open began on a Thursday and ended on a Sunday. But until this year, the 61-year-old event had never competed against a Super Bowl right next door. So this year's tournament begins today and ends Saturday, and the early start may have cost the tournament some prominent players. Despite their last-place status in the East Coast Hockey League South Division, Mobile has proven a formidable foe, something the Knights hope to do something about at 7 tonight when the Mysticks visit Municipal Auditorium. Rebecca Lobo, Steffi Graf and skier Picabo Street were nominated as outstanding female athlete. The winners will be announced in New York Feb.

12. Abbott wins Hutch Award California Angels pitcher Jim Abbott has won the 1995 Hutch Award. The Hutch Award is named after former major league pitcher and manager Fred Hutchinson, who died of cancer in 1964. It's given to a player who has overcome adversity to succeed in baseball. Abbott has pitched in the major leagues for seven seasons despite being born with only one hand.

He posted a combined 11-8 record and 3.70 ERA with the Chicago White Sox and California last season. DEALS The St Louis Cardinals signed Gregg Olson to a $600,000 minor-league contract Olson, 28, saved 160 games from 1989-93, but missed most of the last two seasons with a partially torn tendon in his right elbow. The Philadelphia Phillies signed All-Star second baseman Mickey Morandini to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million plus performance bonuses, thus avoiding an arbitration hearing. Closer Mel Rojas and the Montreal Expos settled on a $2,025 million contract to avoid arbitration. Rojas saved 30 games last season.

Anderson goes to work Kenny Anderson began working out with the Charlotte Hornets yesterday, hoping to inject stability into a team that's had eight point guards this season. Anderson practiced yesterday and plans to play tonight against Washington. The trade ending Anderson's 4'i-season stay with the New Jersey Nets was announced Friday. JACKSON TO COACH STARS Phil Jackson, who has led the Chicago Bulls to a league-best 34-3 record this season, was named coach of this year's East All-Star team. The game will be Feb.

11 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. JORDAN HONORED Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan, after leading his team to a perfect 4-0 record, has been named NBA Player of the Week.
